My Quick and Easy Lower Fat Penne image

This is the simplest recipe I think you will ever make. I just threw this together for supper and eveyone loved it. You can add items you like as this is a basic, simple recipe.

1 lb ground sirloin
1 lb dry penne pasta, Barilla Plus Penne
52 ounces hunts roasted garlic and onion spaghetti sauce
1 cup lowfat mozzarella cheese, shredded

Steps:

  • Fill Dutch oven approximately half way full with water and bring to boil. When water comes to a full boil, add penne and cook until tender, approximately 12 minutes. Drain penne and set aside.
  • In large skillet brown ground sirloin until no longer pink.Add ground sirloin to drained penne in dutch oven.
  • Add the two cans of spaghetti sauce and mozzarella cheese, stir gently until well combined. On medium-low heat, cook until heated thru and cheese melts.

I adapted this from a similar recipe on recipezaar to suit my low fat diet needs. This is a GREAT base recipe or even great on it's own! You can put virtually anything in this and it's fun to play around with the cheese too...sometimes i sue a parmesan and fontina blend to give it a little bit of a different flavor. I prefer to use Barilla Plus pasta for this. I love the lightness of this cheese sauce, it's a great alternative to Alfredo!

1 (8 ounce) box whole wheat penne
3/4 cup vegetable broth (chicken may also be used)
3/4 cup fat-free evaporated milk
1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
4 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/2 tablespoon butter
3 teaspoons flour
sea salt
pepper

Steps:

  • Cook box of penne per package directions and keep warm.
  • Mince garlic and sauté in butter/olive oil blend until garlic is slightly golden.
  • Add broth and milk.
  • Add 3 tsp flour, salt/pepper to taste.
  • Simmer and stir constantly until sauce thickens.
  • Pour over warm pasta, coat and enjoy!
  • **You can put anything in this, chicken, broccoli, any vegetables -- play with it! Have fun with it!
