The Kentucky Derby meets Cinco de Mayo in this refreshing blackberry-mint julep margarita cocktail. Garnish each drink with a blackberry and a sprig of mint, if desired.

6 blackberries, plus more for garnish
6 leaves fresh mint, plus more for garnish
1 ounce bourbon whiskey
1 ounce tequila
1 ounce lime juice
1 teaspoon agave nectar
ice

Steps:

  • Muddle blackberries and mint in a shaker. Add bourbon, tequila, lime juice, and agave nectar.
  • Fill shaker with ice. Shake and strain into two julep glasses filled with fresh ice.

Two classic cocktails combine for a perfect summertime margarita with the not-too-sweet and not-too-tart taste of a mint julep.

½ cup water
½ cup white sugar
½ cup intact mint sprigs
4 cups crushed ice
3 fluid ounces bottled margarita mix
2 fluid ounces tequila
1 fluid ounce mint syrup
2 fluid ounces bourbon whiskey

Steps:

  • Bring water and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan. Cook until dissolved, about 1 minute. Turn off heat and add mint sprigs. Steep for 3 minutes as mint syrup cools. Remove and discard mint.
  • Combine ice, margarita mix, tequila, 1 ounce mint syrup, and bourbon in a blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into 4 glasses.

2 limes (each cut into 16 pieces, 1 wedge reserved for garnish)
2 teaspoons superfine sugar
10 fresh mint leaves
2 ounces Bourbon
1 ounce orange liqueur
1/4 cup seltzer water

Steps:

  • Place the limes in a cocktail shaker. Sprinkle with the sugar and add the mint leaves. Muddle well, making sure the juice is really extracted from the limes and the sugar has dissolved.
  • Add the bourbon, orange liqueur and a couple of ice cubes. Cover and shake well, then strain into a glass. Can be served over ice or straight.
  • Top off with seltzer. Garnish with a lime wedge.
