This recipe of my grandmother's is always a hit at a get-together, especially on those cold, blustery days. I usually keep it warm in a slow cooker. You can use claret or Burgundy.

1 ½ cups boiling water
½ cup white sugar
¼ lemon
8 whole cloves
1 (3 inch) cinnamon stick
1 (750 milliliter) bottle claret wine
1 pinch ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • Stir water and sugar together in a saucepan until sugar dissolves. Add lemon, cloves, and cinnamon stick; bring mixture to a boil and cook until flavors combine, about 10 minutes. Strain and return water mixture to the saucepan; discard lemon, cloves, and cinnamon stick.
  • Stir claret wine into water mixture; heat until hot but not boiling, 5 to 10 minutes. Serve flecked with nutmeg.

6 whole cloves
1 fresh rosemary sprig
1 bottle (750 milliliters) cabernet sauvignon or other dry red wine
1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup bourbon
1/3 cup orange juice
4 teaspoons grated orange zest

Steps:

  • Place cinnamon sticks, cloves and rosemary on a double thickness of cheesecloth; bring up corners of cloth and tie with string to form a bag., In a 1-1/2-qt. slow cooker, combine the wine, cranberries, sugar, bourbon, orange juice and zest. Add spice bag. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or until heated through. Discard spice bag. Serve warm.

3 - 4 Tbsp sugar
4 whole cloves
1 stick of cinnamon
4 slices lemon + more for garnish

  • 1. In a pot, heat above ingredients to just a slight simmer...do not let boil.
  • 2. Remove from heat and let steep 5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove spices and cooked lemon. Then add a fresh slice of lemon to each glass before pouring the hot wine over it.

1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves

4 quarts dry red wine (zinfandel, merlot, burgundy, etc.)
1 pint brandy
1 cup sugar
6 cinnamon sticks
12 cloves, whole
1/8 tsp allspice
1/8 tsp mace
2 oranges, sliced
1 lemon, sliced

Steps:

  • Pour the wine into a large pot and begin heating over low heat. As it begins to warm, add sugar and spices. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add the brandy. Heat thoroughly, but do not allow to boil! Add the lemon and orange. Steep for about 1 hour over low heat. You may add more sugar during this time if desired, stirring well so it disolves. Serve hot and garnish with orange slices. A stick cinnamon could also be used.
