Everyone used to say my great grandma's sugar cookies were the best ever, but then my mom mixed her recipe with her own. These are seriously the best. My friend Angelo even got in trouble with his girlfriend for saying I make the best sugar cookies.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup granulated unbleached cane sugar
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Steps:

  • Mix butter, salt and sugars.
  • Beat in egg, milk, and vanilla.
  • Stir in flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
  • Drop by rounded spoonfuls on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Butter the bottom of a 12 ounce glass, dip in sugar and flatten cookies. If desired, sprinkle cookies with nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, colored sugar, or sprinkles.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are just golden-brown.

Use cookie cutters to cut seasonal shapes from a few cups of Gloria's dough. Prepared frosting and colored sugar make it a snap to decorate these classic Christmas cookies.

2 cups Basic Cookie Dough
Colored sugar and frosting of your choice

Steps:

  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Using 2-1/2-in. cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Leave plain or sprinkle with colored sugar. Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Remove to wire racks to cool. Frost plain cookies; sprinkle with colored sugar if desired.

4 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter or 1 cup regular margarine
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup sugar
3 eggs

Steps:

  • Sift together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; set aside.
  • Cream together butter, brown sugar and sugar in bowl until light and fluffy, using electric mixer at medium speed. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Gradually stir dry ingredients into creamed mixture, blending well. Shape mixture into 1 ¼ inch balls. Place balls, about 3 inches apart, on greased baking sheets. Flatten with floured fork in one direction.
  • Bake in 375°F oven 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from baking sheets; cool on racks. Makes 6 dozen.
