GRANDMA'S SHEET CAKE BROWNIES



Grandma's Sheet Cake Brownies image

Made from scratch brownies with a cooked frosting poured over them right out of the oven, Grandma did good!

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 c sugar
2 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 stick butter
1 c water
4 Tbsp cocoa (i used hersheys dark cocoa)
1/2 c sour cream
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda
FROSTING
6 Tbsp milk
1/2 c 1 stick butter
1 c nuts, chopped (i used pecans and left them whole)
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 c powdered sugar

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350F. In large bowl of a standard mixer, combine sugar, flour and salt and let sit. In a small saucepan, bring 2 sticks butter, water and cocoa to a boil.
  • 2. Take from heat and immediately pour over your dry mix in the bowl and combine well. Then add your cold sour cream, eggs and baking soda. Mix completely then pour into a greased and floured 11 1/2 x 15 1/2inch baking sheet.
  • 3. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until center of brownies test done with a toothpick. Frosting-Boil milk, butter, and cocoa until bubbly. Remove from heat and add nuts, vanilla, and powdered sugar. Mix until smooth and spread on warm brownies. Let frosting set before serving.

1 cup salted butter
1 cup water
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup unsalted butter
6 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10x15-inch cake pan.
  • Combine butter, water, and cocoa powder for cake in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until butter has melted and mixture comes to a boil. Remove from the heat and cool slightly.
  • Meanwhile, mix flour, sugar, and salt together in a large bowl. Beat buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla extract together in a separate bowl.
  • Add melted butter mixture to the flour mixture, then add buttermilk-egg mixture and beat until thoroughly combined. Pour into the prepared cake pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 20 minutes. Remove cake from the oven and cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, combine butter, milk, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract for the frosting in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until butter melts, then stir in powdered sugar. Spread frosting over the warm cake.

I worked from several recipes to come up with this one when I wanted brownies one day, but had run out of eggs. It didn't come out at all as I expected, but that was a good thing! If you can't decide between cake or a brownie, this is the perfect compromise.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
¾ cup brown sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
⅔ cup vegetable oil
⅓ cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons butter, softened
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon milk, or more to taste
¼ cup caramel ice cream topping, or to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan with cooking spray.
  • Stir flour, white sugar, brown sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl. Pour in water, vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla extract; mix until well blended. Spread into the prepared pan.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until top is dry and edges have started to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 30 minutes. Let cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  • Stir confectioners' sugar, butter, and cocoa powder together in a bowl until smooth. Mix in enough milk to reach a spreading consistency.

1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
1/4 cup cocoa
2 eggs
1 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup walnuts (optional)
1 pinch salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F
  • Melt butter in microwave.
  • Add the cocoa and stir.
  • In medium bowl beat eggs until frothy.
  • Add sugar, flour, and salt (also nuts if you are using them).
  • Pour cocoa mixture over egg mixture and stir all together.
  • Put into a greased 8 x 8 pan. Bake for 30 minutes.
  • For a doubled recipe use a 9 x 13 pan.

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda

½ cup butter
1 ½ cups white sugar

2 tablespoons white sugar
1 cup chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a jelly roll pan.
  • Sift flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt together in a bowl.
  • Beat the butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. 2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup water
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup butter
2 Tablespoons cocoa
1/4 cup milk
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and the sugar.
  • In a heavy saucepan, combine butter, shortening, water, and cocoa. Stir and heat to boiling.
  • Pour boiling mixture over the flour and sugar in the bowl.
  • Add the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. Mix well using a wooden spoon or high speed on an electric mixer.
  • Pour into a well greased cookie sheet (17 1/2 x 11 inch) pan.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 15-18 minutes or until brownies test done in center.
  • While brownies bake, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa, and milk. Heat to boiling and stirring constantly.
  • Mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla until frosting is smooth (you may have to whisk it).
  • Pour warm frosting over brownies as soon as you take them out of the oven. Let cool and cut into 40 bars.
