The BEST pie crust you'll ever have! Made with butter and lard (or shortening) in the food processor, this is the flakiest and tender pie crust!

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup chilled unsalted butter (cut into cubes)
1/2 cup chilled lard (cut into cubes)
5 tablespoons ice water (I usually end up with about 6 tablespoons)

Steps:

  • Blend flour, sugar, and salt in processor just until processed.
  • Pulse the butter and lard in, blend until mixture resembles coarse crumbles.
  • Add 5 tablespoons ice water and pulse a few times until dough begins to clump together. Do not overwork. When it starts to come away from the edges, dump the dough on to a floured surface.
  • Add another tablespoon of ice water and, using your hands, mix the water into the dough just until it forms a ball. Add additional water until you get the ball shape needed.
  • Divide dough in half and form each half into a disc. Wrap the disc in plastic wrap and put it into the fridge for at least an hour.
  • If necessary, soften slightly at room temperature before rolling out.
  • I bake this at 375 degrees for about 15 minutes. But keep an eye on it, every oven is a bit different.

3 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1 egg
½ cup water

Steps:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, shortening, sugar, and salt. Blend together with a pastry cutter until crumbly.
  • In a small bowl, mix egg with water. Blend into flour mixture. Chill in refrigerator until ready to use.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup vegetable oil
3 fluid ounces cold milk

Steps:

  • Sift flour and salt into a bowl. Pour vegetable oil into a 1-cup measure and fill the measure with milk up to the 7-ounce mark. Whisk oil and milk together and pour immediately into the bowl with flour. Mix the crust together with a fork just until it holds together. Do not knead.
  • Divide crust in half, form into balls, and roll each half out between sheets of waxed paper. Peel waxed paper from crusts to fit into pie plate.

When I make a Pie crust from scratch , this is my go to recipe. It's so easy to make and is very good. Vinegar can serve two useful roles in pie crusts - it promotes tenderness and can keep the crust from getting too brown.

2 1/2 c all purpose flour
1 c crisco shortening
1 tsp salt
1/4 c water
1 Tbsp vinegar
1 egg

Steps:

  • 1. Mix flour , salt and Crisco shortening together to make a crumb mixture.
  • 2. Beat all the wet ingredients well together and add to the crumb mixture ; blend to form a ball ; then divide and roll out to 2 pie crusts.
  • 3. You can follow any pie recipe that you are gonna be using but if you want to pre-bake the crust, after you have formed your pie dish with the crust then freeze the crust for at least 30 minutes or until chilled. This will prevent the crust from slip down the sides.
  • 4. Preheat your oven to 350°F. After the pie crust has been chilled then line the pie crust with parchment paper or wax paper. Fill at least two-thirds full with pie weights - dry beans, rice, or stainless-steel pie weights.
  • 5. Bake with weights in the pie for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, cool a few minutes and carefully remove pie weights. Poke small holes in the bottom of the pie crust with a fork and return to oven (without the weights) and cook for another 10 minutes or until the crust is golden.
  • 6. Cool completely before filling.
  • 7. NOTE : You may need to cover the edges of the pie with aluminum foil or a crust shield if your going to be putting a filled pie back in the oven to keep the edges from getting too dried out and burnt.

GRANDMA'S FLAKY DOUBLE PIE CRUST

This is my grandma's recipe. She was known for her pies. This crust is so light and flaky. Just delicious! My change to this recipe is my rolling technique. I roll between 2 sheets of parchment paper. Grandma rolled on a floured board. But it works for me!

2 1/2 c flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 c crisco
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 Tbsp lemon juice
3 Tbsp cold water

Steps:

  • 1. Mix flour, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Using a pastry blender (or 2 knives), cut in the Crisco, until pea size pieces form.
  • 2. Add egg, lemon juice, and water, one tablespoon at a time. Toss with a fork until dough will form a ball. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
  • 3. Divide dough in half, and form two, 5 inch discs. Roll a disc between 2 sheets of lightly floured parchment paper, to desired size.
  • 4. Carefully place rolled dough into a 9" pie plate. Fill with fruit filling, and top with remaining rolled dough.
  • 5. Trim, fold, and crimp edges. Cut a few vents in the top of the pie. Bake at 425 degrees, for 40 to 50 minutes.

1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
4 tablespoons water

  • In large bowl mix flour and salt. Cut in shortening with two butter knifes.
  • In separate bowl, mix together egg, vinegar, and water. Drizzle wet mixture into dry mixture, cutting it in.
  • Roll out dough, and fit into two 9 inch pie pans.
  • Bake at 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) for 12 minutes.
