GERMAN OAT CAKE

An old recipe from my recipe files from the 1960's.

Number Of Ingredients 15

1-1/4 cup boiling water
1 cup quick cooking oats
1/2 cup butter
1 4-ounce bar german chocolate
1-1/2 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon bskng soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup packed brown sugar
3 eggs
TOPPING
6 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup light cream
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Steps:

  • 1. In a medium mixing bowl pour the boiling water over the oats. Add butter and chocolate. Let stand 20 minutes. Blend well.
  • 2. In a large mixing bowl mix together flour, sugar, soda and salt. Stir in brown sugar.
  • 3. Add eggs and oat mixture. Beat at low speed until just well blended.
  • 4. Pour into a greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan.
  • 5. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 - 40 minutes.
  • 6. For topping mix brown sugar, butter and cream in a small pot. Bring to a boil while stirring. Reduce heat and simmer 2 - 3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • 7. Add pecans. Spread topping evenly over the hot cake.
  • 8. Broil 4-5 inches from heat for 1 minute or until bubbly. Serve warm or cold.

1 cup quick-cooking oats
4 ounces German sweet chocolate
1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs
6 tablespoons butter or 6 tablespoons margarine
1/4 cup light cream or 1/4 cup condensed milk
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup chopped nuts

Steps:

  • Combine water, butter, oats, and chocolate; let sit 20 minutes.
  • Sift together flour, soda, and salt.
  • Add brown sugar, eggs, and oatmeal mixture to dry ingredients.
  • Bake in a 9x13 inch pan for 25-35 minutes.
  • Frost while hot with topping.
  • Topping:.
  • Boil butter, cream, and brown sugar for 2-3 minutes; pour over warm cake.
  • Sprinkle with chopped nuts.
