HOMEMADE FRENCH FRY SEASONING BLEND

Homemade French Fry Seasoning Blend image

http://www.examiner.com Recipe by cooking examiner Kristin King. "This homemade seasoning blend combines salty, sweet, smoky and spicy flavors - no ketchup necessary. Whether one is making homemade French fries or using frozen, this seasoning blend can be sprinkled on at the end or cooked onto the fry. Either way, this recipe makes enough to have on hand whenever your in the mood for fries. This seasoning blend combines a myriad of spices that all shine through when you bite into the fry. The secret ingredient in this recipe is a touch of sugar. Sugar brings out the salty sweet aspect that many people love so much. The other secret ingredient to this recipe is Penzey's Old World Seasoning Blend. Similar to a seasoning salt, Penzey's seasoning blend has celery salt which adds a nice subtle flavor. Penzey's spices can be ordered online or one can visit their store in Richmond, Virginia. If Penzey's is out of the question, use a good quality seasoning salt with a small pinch of celery salt."

SPICE ESSENTIALS: ZESTY FRENCH FRY SEASONING

Spice Essentials: Zesty French Fry Seasoning image

I put this combination of spices together for sprinkling over fresh hot fries. It did not disappoint. It might be good on other things, but I have yet to go beyond French fries. It has a spicy, smoky heat that really compliments freshly made fries. So, you ready... Let's get into the kitchen.

PLAN/PURCHASE
2 tsp ancho chili powder
1 tsp black pepper, freshly ground
1 tsp salt, kosher variety, fine grind
1 tsp coconut sugar
1 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Steps:

  • 1. PREP/PREPARE
  • 2. Storage of homemade condiments and spices Because homemade spices and condiments do not contain any preservatives, it is important to store them properly. Non-reactive (glass) containers with tight-fitting lids are a must. If I am making a dry spice, I love to use old spice bottles that I have run through the dishwasher. If I am doing homemade sauces, I love using Weck jars. They are all glass, come in all sizes and shapes, and have excellent leakproof lids. If you shop online, you can go to Amazon, and type in "Weck Jars" and you will find a ton of them. Dry spices should be kept in a cool space, away from sunlight (spice cabinet), and sauces, in most cases, should be stored in the fridge. If properly stored this spice mix should last up to a year.
  • 3. • 4. The cayenne pepper gives it its heat, so you might want to play with that ingredient. Possibly by starting with half the amount and going from there.
  • 5. If you want all the ingredients to be uniform, you might give it a few pulses in a spice grinder; however, it is not necessary.
  • 6. Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
  • 7. Mix all the spices together, and then store in a non-reactive jar, until needed.
  • 8. PLATE/PRESENT
  • 9. Sprinkle over freshly baked fries for a yummy treat or try it on something else and let me know how it goes. Enjoy.
  • 10. Keep the faith, and keep cooking.

PETE'S FRENCH FRY SEASONING

Pete's French Fry Seasoning image

This is a recipe my husband created when we were out of all season salt, now when frying up tator tots or french fries we only use this seasoning mix!! Since we don't have a deep fryer, we usually pan fry our tator tots and then toss them with this seasoning. They taste awesome!! We use sea salt so that the sodium isn't as high. If you choose to use regular salt you may need to adjust the amount of salt added to get the right taste. Also tastes great on hashbrowns or diced potatoes!!
