This easy homemade cranberry relish beats the canned version any day.

1 package (12 ounces) fresh or frozen cranberries
1 cup dried cherries
1 cup sugar
2 cups water

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine cranberries (no need to thaw if frozen), cherries, sugar, and water.
  • Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer until most berries have burst and liquid is syrupy, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer to a bowl. Cover, pressing plastic wrap directly on surface of relish; refrigerate.

1 12-ounce package fresh cranberries
1 cup dried tart cherries (about 5 ounces)
1 cup (packed) golden brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

Steps:

  • Mix all ingredients in large bowl. Place half of mixture in processor. Using on/off turns, process until coarsely chopped. Transfer to medium bowl. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Chill at least 1 day and up to 2 days, stirring occasionally.

1 cup dried cranberries
3/4 cup dried cherries
1/2 cup dried tomatoes, diced
3/4 cup apple cider
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
3 shallots, chopped
1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, seeded, cored and cut into 1/4-inch dice
1/2 cup fresh, halved cranberries
2 teaspoons orange zest
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine the dried cranberries, cherries, tomatoes, cider and 3/4 cup water. Set aside for 30 minutes.
  • Heat a large saucepan over medium heat and add the oil. Add the shallots and cook, stirring, until they are just tender, about 3 minutes. (Do not let them brown.) Add the dried-fruit-and-cider mixture, the apple, fresh cranberries and orange zest. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Serve warm or cold.

1/2 cup crème de cassis (black currant-flavored liqueur) or cherry-flavored brandy
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
2 cups dried tart cherries or dried Bing cherries or 1 cup of each (about 10 ounces total)
3/4 cup pecans, toasted, chopped (about 3 ounces)
2 tablespoons grated orange peel
1 6- to 8-pound spiral-cut honey-roasted ham or one 12- to 14-pound honey-roasted turkey
Small dinner rolls (optional)

Steps:

  • Stir crème de cassis, 1/2 cup water and sugar in heavy medium saucepan over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to boil. Add dried cherries. Reduce heat; cover and simmer until cherries are plump, about 5 minutes. Mix in pecans and orange peel. Season relish lightly with salt. Transfer to bowl. Cool. (Can be made 1 week ahead. Cover and refrigerate.)
  • Place ham or turkey on platter. Place bowl with cherry relish alongside. Serve with dinner rolls, if desired.

8 ounces dried cherries, preferably pitted (see note)
1 cup water
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup finely chopped sweet red pepper
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/2 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Place the cherries in a saucepan with the water, bring to a boil, cover and remove from heat. Set aside for one hour.
  • Drain the cherries, reserving the liquid. Chop them fine and mix them with the onion and red pepper.
  • Mix the vinegar and sugar with the reserved soaking liquid. Mix with the cherries, onion and red pepper and season with black pepper. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
