DR PEPPER BBQ SAUCE
My family is stationed in Italy with my husband, Lieutenant William Robert Blackman. William grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, and I'm from Texas, so the dish that spells "home" for us is a good ol' barbecue. I have my own recipe for barbecue sauce that we like to pour all over sliced brisket. Eating it reminds us of weekend barbecues with our families. -Tina Blackman, Naples, Italy

BARBECUE SAUCE W/ DR PEPPER
This is a great sauce that I love to make for baked and grilled chicken. I do not remember where I came across it but have to tell you the 1 teaspoon of pepper is a little hot for us. So, I use only 1/2 teaspoon. Hope you love this just as much as we do!

Steps:
- 1. In a food processor, blend the onion until very finely chopped.
- 2. Add chopped onion to a medium saucepan, add butter, and cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.
- 3. Add all remaining sauce ingredients to saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes or until heated through. Reduce heat to low, cover saucepan with lid, and let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes.
- 4. Remove lid, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes longer with lid off, so sauce thickens. Remove pan from heat and let sauce cool completely. Once cooled, use an emersion blender (or place sauce in a standard blender) to blend the sauce for a few seconds to help it thicken. Then transfer sauce to an air-tight container and keep in refrigerator until ready to use. (It should keep in the refrigerator for several months if kept covered, so you can use leftovers for other BBQ picnics.)
- 5. HOW TO USE THE SAUCE: Brush a generous amount of sauce on hot dogs during the last 2 to 3 minutes of grilling time. When serving the grilled hot dogs, pass the extra sauce so you can spoon a little more sauce onto the grilled hot dogs after they're nestled inside buttered, toasted buns.
