ALL-DAY APPLE BUTTER
I make several batches of this simple and delicious homemade apple butter recipe to freeze in jars. Depending on the sweetness of the apples used, you can adjust the sugar to taste. -Betty Ruenholl, Syracuse, Nebraska

Steps:
- Place apples in a 3-qt. slow cooker. Combine sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt; pour over apples and mix well. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour. , Reduce heat to low; cover and cook for 9-11 hours or until thickened and dark brown, stirring occasionally (stir more frequently as it thickens to prevent sticking). , Uncover and cook on low 1 hour longer. If desired, stir with a wire whisk until smooth. Spoon into freezer containers, leaving 1/2-in. headspace. Cover and refrigerate or freeze.

APPLE BUTTER COOKIES
My mother used to bake these mouthwatering cookies for an after-school treat. Though it's been 55 years since I first found out about them, I still savor the smell that fills the house as these cookies bake. - In a small bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg, oats and apple butter. Combine dry ingredients; gradually add to creamed mixture along with the milk; beat until blended. Stir in nuts and raisins. Cover and refrigerate until easy to handle. , Drop by teaspoonfuls onto lightly greased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until set. Remove to wire racks.

- Place the apples in a slow cooker. In a medium bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Pour the mixture over the apples in the slow cooker and mix well.
- Cover and cook on high 1 hour.
- Reduce heat to low and cook 9 to 11 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thickened and dark brown.
- Uncover and continue cooking on low 1 hour. Stir with a whisk, if desired, to increase smoothness.
- Spoon the mixture into sterile containers, cover and refrigerate or freeze.

CHRISTMAS APPLE BUTTER
I would make apple butter for my sons to give to their teachers at Christmas when they grew up I continued to make and give it to friends and neighbors.

Steps:
- Chop apples leave skin on. Place in a large, deep pot.
- Pour liquids on . Bring to boil cook until soft about 20, 25 MINUTES.
- Run through a food mill .
- Add sugar + salt, stir until dissolved then add spices.
- Pour into 5 quart slow cooker . Cook uncovered on high about 1 hour or until desired thickness.
- Sterilize jars and lids . Pour apple butter in pint jars leave 1/4 head space. PUT IN WATER BATH 10 MINUTES TO SEAL REMOVE AND LET COOL . MAKES 4 PINTS
