Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 20

9 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small cubes
3 cups all-purpose flour
1½ tablespoons baking powder
1½ teaspoons salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
1½ cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 small onion (grated)
¼ teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon salt
2 garlic cloves (minced)
28 ounce can crushed tomatoes
¼ teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh basil
1 tablespoon olive oil
Freshly ground black pepper
8 ounces mozzarella cheese (shredded)
1 pound sweet Italian sausage (cooked and crumbled)
Pepperoni slices
3 tablespoons Parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Make the Crust: Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish; set aside.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda until well combined. Add the butter and, using a pastry blender, cut in butter until it's the size of small peas. Pour in cold buttermilk and stir mixture with a wooden spoon just until a dough forms (do not overmix).
  • Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface; gently pat into a rough ball. Use a sharp knife or bench scraper to cut dough in half. Place one half on top of other half, and very gently press halves together, shaping into a rough ball again. Repeat 3 times.
  • Gently shape dough into a rough rectangle about 11x14 inches. Gently transfer the dough to the prepared baking dish and press into the bottom, corners and up the sides. Refrigerate while you prepare the sauce.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  • Make the Sauce: Heat the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat until melted. Add onion, oregano, and salt; cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid has evaporated and onion is golden brown, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in tomatoes and sugar, increase heat to high, and bring to a simmer. Lower heat to medium-low and simmer until reduced to about 2½ cups, 25 to 30 minutes. Off the heat, stir in the basil and olive oil, then season with salt and pepper.
  • Bake the Pizza: Remove the dough-lined pan from the refrigerator and sprinkle with the shredded mozzarella cheese. Layer on the pepperoni and sausage, if using. Spread about half to three-quarters of the sauce over the toppings (you can freeze the leftover sauce) and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake until the crust is golden brown, about 30 minutes. Remove pizza from oven and let rest 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

FAST, FUN, CHEAP, EASY PIZZA

Fast, Fun, Cheap, Easy Pizza image

i learned the original recipie from my home econonomics class back in 7th grade. The fact that this has stayed with my for so long should tell you something! I suggest making this recipie with your girlfriend because it is involved but not too complicated and cooking something together will bring you closer together. The ingredients listed are approximate because cooking pizza is more of an art than a science.

CHEAP & DEEP BISCUIT DOUGH PIZZA

Cheap & Deep Biscuit Dough Pizza image

Ever come home and wonder what's for dinner? And you are in the mood for pizza, but take-out is too expensive, the frozen pizza is too expensive, and virtually tasteless, and worst of all- your bank account is next to zip because instead of a Christmas Bonus you got the pink slip? Is that what's buggin' you? I feel your pain- and I love to see what's in the 'fridge and the pantry, and with a few minutes of fun you can have a fantastic deep dish pizza that will rival anything Lou Malnati in Chicago can dish out! I've been unemployed for 6 weeks and was craving pizza one night- and used what I had. I've made 3 of these in the past 4 weeks and each one gets better than the one before!

Time 30m

Yield 1 pizza, 6-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 (7 1/2 ounce) packages biscuits (Buttermilk or Homestyle- your choice)
4 ounces pork sausage (Sage, Hot & Spicy or Italian- your choice)
4 ounces genoa salami (thin sliced is best!)
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes (with basil, garlic and oregano)
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 (4 ounce) can mushrooms, drained (stems and pieces)
1 (8 ounce) bag cheese (Shredded Italian Cheese Blend or Pizza Blend)
2 tablespoons oregano
2 tablespoons sweet basil
1 medium white onion, sliced into wafer-thin slices

Steps:

  • Grease a 10 1/2" x 15" baking sheet with olive oil.
  • Preheat your oven to 400F (or the temperature listed on your biscuits).
  • Open the packages of biscuits and roll out each biscuit until it is about 1/4" thick. Lay the flat biscuits on the baking sheet and cover the entire bottom, making sure you have no gaps.
  • Place the sheet into the oven for about 3 minutes to pre-bake the crust.
  • Remove the sheet from the oven, and apply a coating of olive oil to the crust.
  • Layer on 1/2 of the bag of shredded cheese.
  • Open the Diced Tomatoes, put into a bowl and add the Tomato paste, and stir together. Spread on top of the cheese layer.
  • Layer on the 4 ounces of the thin sliced Genoa Salami.
  • Take the sausage and mix in the 2 tablespoons of Oregano and the 2 tablespoons of the Sweet Basil. Once mixed together (I mash this in my hands), place small pinches all over the pizza, and even on the salami.
  • Layer on the Mushrooms.
  • Take the Sliced Onion and spread around the pizza.
  • Layer on the remaining cheese and any leftover goodies.
  • Place the tray back into the oven for about 10-15 minutes, make sure the sausage is cooked. Due to oven variables, keep a close watch after 10 minutes!
  • Remove from oven, slice and enjoy!
