My Grandfather owned a drive-in restaurant back in the 1950's. This is his exact recipe for Coney Dogs from back in the day. I make this on special occasions and it is always hit with friends and family. Enjoy.

2 pounds ground beef
½ cup chopped onion
1 ½ cups ketchup
¼ cup white sugar
¼ cup white vinegar
¼ cup prepared yellow mustard
½ teaspoon celery seed
¾ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
¾ teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Place the ground beef and onion in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring to crumble, until beef is browned. Drain. Transfer the beef and onion to a slow cooker and stir in the ketchup, sugar, vinegar and mustard. Season with celery seed, Worcestershire sauce, pepper and salt. Cover and simmer on Low setting for a few hours before serving.

1 pound lean ground beef (90% lean)
1 cup beef stock
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • Prepare campfire or grill for medium-high heat. In a Dutch oven, cook beef over campfire 8-10 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking into crumbles. Stir in remaining ingredients; bring to a boil. Move Dutch oven to indirect heat. Cook, uncovered, 20-25 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally. Freeze option: Freeze cooled meat mixture in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a saucepan, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if necessary.

2 pounds ground beef (raw)
2/3 cup water
1/4 cup diced onion
2 cups ketchup
4 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1 - 2 teaspoons salt
1 - 2 Tablespoons white vinegar

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, mix raw hamburger and water; add onion.
  • Heat until it comes to a simmer; add ketchup, chili powder and 1 teaspoon salt.
  • Simmer for 1 hour, stirring frequently. If the mixture becomes too dry, add more water, a little at a time.
  • Taste, and add up to another teaspoon salt.
  • Right before serving, stir in white vinegar, starting with 1 tablespoon and adding up to 1 additional tablespoon based on flavor.

2 pounds 80/20 ground beef
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Oil, for frying
1 natural-casing wiener
Yellow mustard, for topping
1 hot dog bun, heated
Chopped onions, for garnish

Steps:

  • For the coney sauce: In a large pan, brown the ground beef, then discard excess grease. Add beef to a stockpot or crockpot and set to low heat. Add chili powder, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powders, paprika, cayenne and 1 cup water to the pot and mix together. Cook on low, stirring occasionally and stirring in more water 1/4 cup at a time as necessary, until you achieve your desired consistency, 4 to 6 hours.
  • For the coney: Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 375 degrees F or heat a grill to 425 degrees F. Cook the wiener until the natural casing gives you a nice "snap."
  • Apply yellow mustard to the inside of the hot dog bun. Add wiener to the bun. Add coney sauce and top with onions.

B&K CONEY DOG SAUCE

This is the best hot dog sauce that I have ever had. Friends always tell me to let them know when I am making this sauce so that they can come over. This sauce is also good as a sloppy joe sandwich. It is so good that my oldest son asked for it for his birthday.

8 lb hamburger
1 qt water
1/2 c dried onion
1/4 c chili powder
3/4 c sugar
1 Tbsp salt
1 medium bottle ketchup

Steps:

  • 1. Place water, hamburger and onions in a large pot and cook on medium high heat for 40 minutes. Stirring occasionally.
  • 2. Drain hamburger and place back in pot. Add chili powder, sugar and salt. Stir and cook for 20 minutes on medium heat.
  • 3. Add medium bottle of ketchup and beat with an electric mixer until well blended and all large chunks of meat are broke up. Put sauce over a hot dog or on a hamburger bun. And ENJOY!!!

1 cup water
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
1/2 cup sweet pickle relish
