THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

BEST SLOPPY JOES

Who isn't looking for quick, healthy meal solutions during the busy holiday and shopping season? Here's a sophisticated twist on a kid favorite. My daughter, Tiffany, came up with this lower-fat version of traditional sloppy joes. Best of all, this recipe can be made ahead and frozen for real holiday convenience. However, the tangy kick from the orange peel may not appeal to all children. -Suzanne McKinley, Lyons, Georgia

GRANDMA'S BEST-EVER SLOPPY JOES

Grandma's Best-Ever Sloppy Joes image

This recipe came from my grandma--one of the few we found written down! I grew up eating these sloppy joes as a kid and now my own kids love them too. Add the oatmeal in small portions and slowly--it doesn't take a whole lot. If you choose, you can also used minced onion to taste--works well if you need to cook more quickly!

BEST EVER SLOPPY JOES

Best Ever Sloppy Joes image

These really are the best ever sloppy joes! Sassy, tangy, sweet and spicy with a great balance of flavors. Plus, this is a quick 'n easy one dish meal (don't mind the long list of ingredients, it really goes together quickly, I promise). The veggies get "sneaked in" & they contribute mellow depth of flavor, while providing valuable health benefits to your family (and nobody will be the wiser!). :) Serve hot on a warmed hamburger bun (we like soft potato buns) with or without shredded cheese, and a pickle spear on the side is good. YUM! I like to make a double batch, one for now and one for later because leftovers are super fabulous the next day (and it freezes beautifully, as well). Hope you enjoy as much as we do!! :)

THE BEST EVER SLOPPY JOES!!!

The Best Ever Sloppy Joes!!! image

Let me start out by saying I HATE, yes HATE sloppy joes.....HOWEVER....This recipe is absolutely awesome, and I've spent months tweaking the original base recipe to what it is today..... I promise you, you'll never use Manwhich again!!!

Provided by Jennifer McConnell @Shutterbug81

Categories     Beef

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 pound(s) ground beef
3/4 cup(s) ketchup
1/2 cup(s) spicy bbq sauce
3 teaspoon(s) prepared yellow mustard
2 teaspoon(s) worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup(s) diced onion
1/2 cup(s) diced green or red pepper (i use both)
1 can(s) rotell or tex mex brand tomatoes with chilies
2 teaspoon(s) garlic powder
3 teaspoon(s) brown sugar

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef, drain MOST of the grease out, not all of it. Put in crock pot.
  • Place onions, tomatoes, peppers, salt, pepper, garlic, mustard, and worcestershire sauce in crock pot. Mix well.
  • Start putting ketchup and bbq sauce in crock pot, mix well...... *****NOTE***** Everyone's taste is different, so my suggestion is to do some taste testing as you're adding the ketchup, bbq sauce, and brown sugar, so that you get the proper mix for your personal palate. What's written above is how my family loves them, sweet and spicy.
  • Set crock pot on high for 1 hour, or on low for 2-3 hours or more, til onions and peppers are cooked through but still somewhat crisp.
  • Serve on toasted bread, enjoy!!! We save leftovers for lunch the next day, and serve it over white rice rather than on bread.

Best Homemade Sloppy Joes Recipe - (4.4/5) image

Provided by msippigrl

Number Of Ingredients 18

3/4 cup ketchup (I use Hunt's)
3/4 cup chili sauce (Heinz)
1 cup water
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar (I used dark)
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon dijon mustard (I used Grey Poupon)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
Cayenne pepper or crushed red peppers, to taste (optional)
2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 medium onion, chopped (3/4 cup)
1 medium green bell pepper, chopped (2/3 cup)
2 lbs. lean ground beef (I used 93/7)
Salt, to taste (optional)
8 hamburger buns (plus butter for toasting, if desired)

Steps:

  • Chop onion and bell pepper. Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk ingredients ketchup through worcestershire sauce together. Set aside. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat; add onion and bell pepper and cook 4-5 minutes, stirring constantly, just until crisp tender (they will finish cooking later). Increase heat to medium-high; add ground beef to the onions and peppers and cook until meat is no longer pink, breaking it up into tiny pieces as it cooks. Drain off any liquid or fat. Stir in the sauce mixture and bring to a boil; then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until mixture is thick with only a little sauce left, stirring frequently. Season with salt, if desired. Serve on buttered, pan-toasted hamburger buns with hamburger dills, mustard, or whatever condiments you like.
