Steps:
- Butter a 9x13-inch pan.
- Cover bottom of pan with hash browns.
- Add hamburger, salt pepper and onions.
- Sprinkle peas on top.
- Mix soup and milk together and pour over peas.
- Top with cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake at 350°F for one hour.
- Sprinkle with French fried onions and return to oven for ten more minutes.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish.
- Mix hash brown potatoes, vegetable oil, and black pepper in a bowl; press into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir beef, garlic powder, and onion powder in the hot skillet until beef is browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes; drain and discard grease.
- Mix water and gravy mix into the cooked beef; bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover skillet, and simmer until water evaporates, about 5 minutes. Fold in 1/2 cup Cheddar cheese. Spoon beef mixture onto the potato crust.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup Cheddar cheese and bake until cheese is lightly browned, about 5 more minutes.

A topping of french-fried onions provides a little crunch to this meaty main dish from Rochelle Boucher of Brooklyn, Wisconsin. "Since this casserole is practically a meal in itself, I simply accompany it with a fruit salad and dessert," she relates.

- In a large bowl, combine the potatoes, oil and pepper. Press into a greased 8-in. square baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are thawed and set., Meanwhile, in a large saucepan over medium heat, cook the beef until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the water, gravy mix and garlic salt. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Add vegetables; cook and stir for 5 minutes. Stir in half of the onions and cheese., Pour over potatoes. Bake for 5-10 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining onions and cheese; bake 5 minutes longer or until cheese is melted.

BEEF & HASH BROWNS HOT DISH
This is my favourite hot dish. I have substituted a small roast cut into cubes for the ground beef. I have also used shredded potatoes or potato cubes for the hash brown patties. So good!

- 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9 x 13" pan with cooking spray. Layer the bottom of the pan with hash brown patties, overlapping as necessary. I also break some of the patties into pieces to fill the holes.
- 2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef. Add the onion and cook til the onion pieces are soft. Add 1/2 cup water and the brown gravy mix. Stir until thickened.
- 3. Pour the ground beef mixture over the hash brown patties. Sprinkle the peas on top. Mix together the soup and the milk. Pour that over the peas. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese over top.
- 4. Cover and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and add the French-fried onions. Bake another 15 minutes, uncovered.
