Our summer is ending, that means winter will be here before we know it bringing with it the dreaded lurgies !!

Number Of Ingredients 10

400 ml water
4 cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
3 cm piece ginger, finely sliced
1 small red chili
500 ml orange juice
150 g honey
1 lemon, zest and juice
2 oranges, cut into slices

Steps:

  • Put water, spices and chilli into a small saucepan over medium heat.
  • Simmer till liquid is reduced by half.
  • Add orange juice, honey, lemon zest and juice.
  • Cook further 5 minutes or until aromatic.
  • Put orange slices into 4 tall glasses.
  • Pour tea through a strainer into glasses.
  • Serve warm.

A favorite remedy for cold and flu. Effective, easy to make and tasty, though not for the weak of heart. Make a batch before the cold season starts. This recipe is out of Rosemary Gladstar's book "Herbs for the Home Medicine Chest" - A must have book for any herb lover!

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 quart vinegar
1/4 cup grated fresh horseradish
1 onion, chopped
1 head garlic, peeled & chopped
2 tablespoons powdered turmeric
cayenne pepper
1 cup honey, to taste

Steps:

  • In a glass or stainless steel sauce pan heat vinegar on the stove to where it is warm, but not boiling.
  • Fill a clean glass jar with horseradish, onion, garlic, turmeric, and a pinch or two of Cayenne pepper.
  • Pour in the warmed vinegar and cap with an acid-proof lid.
  • Store in a warm place 3 to 4 weeks; shaking a few times a week.
  • Strain mixture and add enough honey to suit your taste.
  • Rebottle fire cider and refrigerate.
  • At the first sign of a cold take 1 to 2 tablespoons every 2 to 3 hours until your symptoms subside.
