Asian cuisine has become increasingly popular around the world, and one dish that has taken on a life of its own is Asian chicken pizza. This fusion dish combines the best of both worlds - savory chicken toppings with tangy and sweet Asian sauces, all atop a crispy pizza crust. In this article, we will explore the history of Asian chicken pizza, its many variations, and how to make the perfect version at home.

The Origins of Asian Chicken Pizza

Asian chicken pizza appeared on the American food scene in the early 1990s. Wolfgang Puck, a celebrity chef and restauranteur, is credited with inventing the dish at his famous Spago restaurant in Beverly Hills, California. Puck drew inspiration from the classic Chinese dish, Peking duck, which features hoisin sauce, scallions, and cucumbers inside a thin pancake. Puck's version of the dish includes roasted chicken, hoisin sauce, mozzarella cheese, and topped with scallions, cilantro, and sliced jalapeno peppers.

Ingredients

Ingredients used in Asian chicken pizza can vary, depending on the recipe and personal preference. However, some common ingredients include:

  • Pizza crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • Cooked and shredded chicken
  • Asian sauces (hoisin, teriyaki, sweet and sour, peanut sauce, etc.)
  • Mozzarella cheese or a mix of cheeses (cheddar, Monterey jack, etc.)
  • Vegetables (scallions, bell peppers, onions, sliced jalapenos, mushrooms, etc.)
  • Herbs (cilantro, basil, etc.)

Variations of Asian Chicken Pizza

The sauce is spread over the crust and topped with cooked and shredded chicken, grated carrots, onions, and mozzarella cheese. The pizza is then baked in the oven until crispy and golden brown. Once out of the oven, it's topped with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.

Chinese-style Asian Chicken Pizza

Chinese-style Asian chicken pizza is the original version of the dish. It is made with hoisin sauce, cooked and shredded chicken, and mozzarella cheese.
