APPLESCOTCH CRISP

Applescotch Crisp image

Meet the Cook: Just as soon as the first crop of apples is off the trees, I fix this crisp. Thanks to the butterscotch pudding, it's moist and sweet. It's popular at potlucks, and it's a nice snack. In fact, I'm reluctant to make it in the evening - I'm afraid someone will sneak down to the refrigerator at midnight and claim it! My husband and I have four children, ranging in age from 21 to 8. -Elaine Nicholl, Nottingham, Pennsylvania

The Basic Recipe

The basic Applescotch crisp recipe consists of simple, wholesome ingredients. The crust is made with flour, oats, sugar, and butter. The apples are peeled and sliced and mixed with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to create the filling. The butterscotch topping is made from brown sugar, butter, and cream. The crust is baked in the oven until crispy and golden brown, and the filling and topping are added afterward.
Variations
While the basic Applescotch crisp recipe is delicious, there are many ways to customize it to make it even more mouth-watering. Some people prefer to add nuts, such as chopped pecans or walnuts, to the crust for added texture and flavor. Others enjoy adding raisins, dried cranberries, or other dried fruit to the filling. For those who like a bit of spice, a pinch of ground ginger or cloves can be added to the apple mixture.
Techniques
To make the perfect Applescotch crisp, it is essential to use the right techniques. One of the most important things is to use a good quality baking dish that has a non-stick coating. This will help prevent the crust from sticking and make it easier to remove. It is also important to bake the crust for long enough to make it crisp and golden brown. To prevent the filling from becoming too wet, it is a good idea to sprinkle a little flour or cornstarch over the apples before adding the topping.
Serving Suggestions

For a healthier option, it can be served with plain yogurt instead. Applescotch crisp also makes a great snack or treat for any time of day.

When it comes to baking, nothing beats the aroma of an apple crisp fresh out of the oven. The perfect balance of crisp apples and sweet topping is what makes it a classic dessert. However, making an excellent crisp is not as easy as it seems. Here are some valuable tips that can help you master the art of making an irresistibly delicious applescotch crisp.

1. Choosing the Right Apples

The type of apple you choose will have a significant impact on the flavor and texture of your crisp. There are various types of apples available, and each one has a different taste and texture. Some apples are sweet, while others are tart. Some are soft, and others are firm. For apple crisp, it is best to use a combination of sweet and tart apples. Some of the best apples for crisp include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Jonagold, and Pink Lady. These apples have a firm texture that holds up well while baking, and they have a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness.
2. Preparing the Apples
Before making the crisp, it is essential to prepare the apples properly. Start by washing the apples thoroughly and removing the cores. You can peel the apples if you prefer, but leaving the skin on adds texture and nutrients to your crisp. To slice the apples evenly, use a sharp knife or an apple slicer.
3. Mixing the Topping
The topping is what makes apple crisp so delicious. It is a mixture of flour, sugar, butter, oats, and cinnamon. It is essential to mix the topping ingredients properly to achieve the perfect texture. The butter should be chilled and cut into small pieces, and then mixed with the dry ingredients using a pastry cutter or your hands. The mixture should be crumbly but not too dry.
4. Adding a Twist with Butterscotch
Adding butterscotch chips to your crisp is a simple yet delicious way to give it a unique twist. The butterscotch chips add a sweet and creamy flavor to the crisp. To add butterscotch chips to your crisp, simply sprinkle them over the apple mixture before adding the topping.
5. Using a Cast-Iron Skillet
A cast-iron skillet is an excellent tool for making apple crisp because it distributes heat evenly, resulting in a perfectly cooked crisp. Additionally, it can be used to serve the crisp straight from the oven, which adds a touch of rustic charm to your dessert.
6. Baking Time and Temperature
The key to a perfect crisp is baking it to the right temperature and time. The crisp should be baked at 375°F for 40-45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown, and the apples are tender. To test if the crisp is ready, insert a toothpick into the center of the crisp. If it comes out clean, the crisp is done.
7. Serving and Storing
When serving apple crisp, it is best to serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. To store the leftover crisp, cover it loosely with foil or plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, place the crisp in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes or until heated through.

Conclusion

Making an applescotch crisp is a simple yet delicious dessert that everyone will love. By following these tips, you can create the perfect crisp that is sweet, crunchy, and full of flavor. Remember to choose the right apples, mix the topping correctly, add a twist with butterscotch, use a cast-iron skillet, bake it to the right temperature and time, and serve it warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
