CHERRY-APPLESAUCE SALAD

Cherry-Applesauce Salad image

This recipe comes from an old church cookbook that I have been cooking out of for years. The dish is so easy to prepare, and everyone I've ever served it to has loved it. Be sure to use a good quality applesauce so the gelatin will get firm and set-up nicely. Cheaper applesauces have too much liquid in them for this recipe.

Applesauce salad is a delicious and refreshing side dish that adds a pop of sweetness and acidity to any meal. It's made using a combination of applesauce, whipped cream, and various fruits and vegetables. Applesauce salad recipes can be quite versatile, as there are countless ways to mix and match ingredients to create different flavor profiles and textures.

History

The origins of applesauce salad are uncertain, but it's believed to have been a popular dish in the United States during the 1950s and 60s. The recipe likely originated as a way to use up leftover applesauce, which was a common pantry staple at the time. Over the years, applesauce salad recipes have evolved to include a wider range of ingredients, including dried fruit, nuts, and even marshmallows.

Ingredients

The basic ingredients in an applesauce salad recipe are applesauce and whipped cream. From there, you can add any combination of fresh or canned fruits and vegetables, as well as nuts, dried fruit, and other extras. Some popular ingredients include:
Fruits and vegetables:
  • Chopped apples
  • Oranges
  • Pineapple
  • Bananas
  • Grapes
  • Pears
  • Cranberries
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Cucumbers
Nuts and dried fruit:
  • Walnuts
  • Pecans
  • Almonds
  • Raisins
  • Dried cranberries
  • Dried cherries
Extras:
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Coconut flakes
  • Jell-O powder

Preparation

Making applesauce salad is relatively easy, and can be done in just a few steps. First, you'll need to prepare your fruits and vegetables by washing and chopping them into bite-sized pieces. Then, in a large mixing bowl, combine the whipped cream and applesauce, using a whisk or electric mixer to mix them together until smooth. Next, gently fold your fruits and vegetables into the whipped cream mixture, stirring to coat everything evenly. Be careful not to overmix, which can cause the salad to become too runny. Finally, add any nuts, dried fruit, or other extras, and mix everything together one last time.

Serving

Applesauce salad can be served immediately, or chilled in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving, which allows the flavors to meld together. It's best enjoyed as a side dish with a savory main course, such as roasted chicken or pork. Some people also enjoy eating applesauce salad as a sweet dessert, particularly when it's made with Jell-O or marshmallows.

Variations

One of the great things about applesauce salad is that it's incredibly versatile, and can be adjusted to suit your tastes and dietary preferences. Here are a few popular variations to try:
Healthy applesauce salad
For a healthier version of this recipe, use low-fat whipped cream or yogurt, and add plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Skip the marshmallows and other sugary extras, and instead use a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg to add flavor.
Winter applesauce salad
In the colder months, try making an applesauce salad with winter fruits like pears, cranberries, and oranges. Top with chopped nuts or a drizzle of honey for added deliciousness.
Spiced applesauce salad
Add a touch of warmth to your salad by mixing in some cinnamon, ginger, or cardamom. These spices pair well with applesauce and can make your dish feel cozier and more comforting.

Conclusion

Applesauce salad recipes are a fun and easy way to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet, while also enjoying a sweet and delicious side dish. By experimenting with different ingredients and variations, you can create a personalized version of this classic recipe that's perfect for any occasion.
Applesauce salad is a perfect blend of flavors, texture, and nutrition. It is a versatile dish that can be made with different ingredients, ranging from fruits to vegetables. The applesauce provides a smooth and creamy texture, while the fruits and vegetables add crunchiness and color to the salad. Whether you're looking for a healthy snack or a side dish to complement your meal, applesauce salad is an excellent choice. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips for making delicious applesauce salad recipes. Tip 1: Choose the right applesauce The first tip when making applesauce salad is to choose the right type of applesauce. Different brands and types of applesauce have different flavors and textures, so it's essential to choose the one that you like. Some applesauce is sweetened, while others are unsweetened. Some are chunky, while others are smooth. If you want a smooth and creamy texture, go for smooth applesauce. If you prefer a chunky texture, choose chunky applesauce. Tip 2: Use fresh ingredients The second tip is to use fresh ingredients. Fresh fruits and vegetables will add more flavor to the salad than canned or frozen ones. When picking fresh produce, choose those that are in season as they are likely to be cheaper and more flavorful. You can use a variety of fruits and vegetables in your salad, such as apples, pears, strawberries, grapes, carrots, and celery. Tip 3: Include healthy ingredients The third tip is to include healthy ingredients in your applesauce salad. You can add nuts, seeds, and dried fruits to your salad to add more nutrients and fiber. These ingredients will also provide crunchiness to your salad. You can also add herbs and spices such as parsley, mint, and cinnamon for flavor and extra health benefits. Tip 4: Balance sweetness and acidity The fourth tip is to balance the sweetness and acidity of the salad. Applesauce is naturally sweet, so it's essential to balance it out with some acidity. You can add lemon juice, vinegar, or apple cider vinegar to your salad dressing to give it a tangy taste. Conversely, if you want a sweeter salad, you can add honey, maple syrup, or agave nectar. Tip 5: Mix and match ingredients The fifth tip is to mix and match your ingredients. You don't have to stick to a specific recipe; you can experiment with different fruits, vegetables, and dressings to create your flavor profile. You can also try adding some protein to your salad, such as tofu or chicken, to make it more filling. Tip 6: Adjust the texture The sixth tip is to adjust the texture of your salad. If you like a crunchy salad, add some nuts, seeds, or croutons. If you prefer a smooth and creamy salad, use smooth applesauce and blend your dressing until it's creamy. You can also adjust the texture by cutting your fruits and vegetables into different shapes and sizes. Tip 7: Store your salad properly The seventh tip is to store your salad properly. Applesauce salad can be stored in the fridge for up to three days, but the texture and taste may change over time. To keep your salad fresh, store it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge. If you're taking your salad to work or school, store it in a lunchbox with an ice pack to keep it fresh. Conclusion In conclusion, applesauce salad is a delicious and nutritious dish that can be enjoyed in many ways. With the right ingredients and techniques, you can create a salad that is both healthy and flavorful. Remember to choose the right applesauce, use fresh ingredients, include healthy ingredients, balance sweetness and acidity, mix and match ingredients, adjust the texture, and store your salad properly. These tips will help you create the perfect applesauce salad recipe that your family and friends will love.
