APPLESAUCE MEATLOAF

Applesauce Meatloaf image

I was given this recipe by my matron of honor more than 25 years ago. It is a family favorite. It is quite different from the usual meatloaf, sweet enough that the kids love it, but the Dijon mustard cuts the sweetness so adults will enjoy it as well.

Applesauce meatloaf is a classic comfort food that has been enjoyed by many for generations. This dish is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy a hearty, home-cooked meal that is not only delicious but also easy to make. This simple recipe consists of ground meat mixed with breadcrumbs, eggs, seasonings, and of course, applesauce. The applesauce serves as both a sweetener and a binder, giving the meatloaf a moist and tender texture.

The Benefits of Using Applesauce in Meatloaf

Using applesauce in meatloaf recipes provides several benefits that make this dish stand out from others. One of the main benefits is that it helps to keep the meatloaf moist and tender. This is because the natural sugars in the applesauce caramelize during cooking, creating a delicious flavor that also helps to retain moisture. Another benefit of using applesauce in meatloaf is that it makes the dish more nutritious. Applesauce is a great source of fiber and vitamins, which can help to support overall health and wellbeing. By incorporating this ingredient into your meatloaf recipe, you can enjoy a wholesome and satisfying meal that is also good for you.

How to Make Applesauce Meatloaf

Making applesauce meatloaf is a straightforward process that requires only a few ingredients and little preparation. The first step is to gather all the necessary ingredients, which include: - Ground meat (usually beef or turkey) - Breadcrumbs - Eggs - Applesauce - Onions - Garlic - Salt and pepper - Worcestershire sauce - Ketchup Once you have gathered all the ingredients, you can begin the preparation process by preheating your oven to 350°F. Next, mix the ground meat with the breadcrumbs, eggs, onions, garlic, and seasonings in a large bowl. Then, add the applesauce and Worcestershire sauce and mix well until all the ingredients are combined evenly. Once the mixture is well combined, transfer it to a baking dish and shape it into a loaf. Spread ketchup evenly on top of the meatloaf, and then place it in the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 60 minutes, or until the meatloaf is fully cooked and the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

Alternative Variations of Applesauce Meatloaf

While the classic applesauce meatloaf recipe is always a crowd-pleaser, there are several alternative variations that you can try to switch things up. Here are some ideas to get you started: - Cheddar Applesauce Meatloaf: Add shredded cheddar cheese to the meatloaf mixture for an extra layer of flavor and cheesiness. - BBQ Applesauce Meatloaf: Replace the ketchup topping with BBQ sauce for a sweet and tangy twist. - Apple Cinnamon Meatloaf: Add cinnamon and diced apples to the meatloaf mixture for a sweet and savory flavor combination. - Turkey Applesauce Meatloaf: Use ground turkey instead of beef for a healthier and leaner option.

Conclusion

Applesauce meatloaf is a classic comfort food that is easy to make and delicious to eat. Using applesauce in the recipe can help to keep the meatloaf moist and tender while also adding a sweet and tangy flavor. With a few simple ingredients and some basic kitchen skills, you can enjoy this wholesome and satisfying dish in no time.
Meatloaf is one of the most popular comfort foods out there, but it's not always the most exciting dish. That's where the addition of applesauce comes in. The sweetness of the applesauce adds a new dimension to the savory and hearty flavors of the meatloaf. Here are some valuable tips to keep in mind when making applesauce meatloaf.

Choose the Right Applesauce

The type of applesauce you use in your meatloaf can make all the difference. Look for unsweetened or minimally sweetened applesauce to avoid adding unnecessary sugars to your dish. You can also try making your own applesauce using fresh apples for an even fresher and healthier alternative. Just blend the apples until smooth, then cook them on the stove until they're soft and saucy.

Pick the Right Meat

The type of meat you use in your applesauce meatloaf is also important. While ground beef is the most common option, you can also use ground turkey or chicken for a healthier twist on this classic dish. You can even mix different types of meat together to make your meatloaf more interesting.

Add Enough Binders

To keep your meatloaf from falling apart, it's important to use enough binders. Most meatloaf recipes call for breadcrumbs, but you can also use crushed crackers, oats, or even quinoa. The applesauce also acts as a binder in this recipe, so be sure to use enough of it.

Don't Overmix

When mixing your ingredients together, avoid overmixing. Overmixing can lead to tough, dry meatloaf. Mix everything together just until it's combined, then stop. You'll end up with a more tender and juicy meatloaf.

Season Well

Meatloaf can be bland if it's not seasoned properly. Be sure to add enough salt, pepper, and any other spices you like. Garlic and onion powder, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce are all great additions to meatloaf. Remember that the sweetness of the applesauce may also impact the overall flavor, so taste as you go to ensure the flavors are balanced.

Bake at the Right Temperature and Time

To ensure that your meatloaf cooks evenly and thoroughly, bake it at the right temperature and for the right amount of time. Most recipes call for a temperature of 350°F and a baking time of around 45-60 minutes. Check the internal temperature of your meatloaf using a meat thermometer – it should be at least 160°F for ground beef or at least 165°F for ground turkey or chicken.

Let it Rest

Once your meatloaf is done, let it rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing into it. This helps the juices redistribute so you end up with a more tender and flavorful meatloaf. If you slice into it right away, you risk losing those precious juices and ending up with a dry meatloaf.

Conclusion

Applesauce meatloaf is a delicious twist on an old classic. Keep these tips in mind when making your own version and you'll end up with a tender, juicy, and flavorful meatloaf that everyone will love. Don't be afraid to experiment with different types of meat or spices to make it your own.
