Time 35m

Yield 4 to 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom (optional, but delicious)
3 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled, halved vertically and cored
4 tablespoons salted butter, melted
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 orange, zested and juiced (about 3 tablespoons juice and 2 teaspoons zest)
1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
1/4 cup slivered or sliced almonds
Pinch kosher salt
Honey, for serving
Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Steps:

  • For the apple pie spice: Mix together the cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cardamom if using in a small bowl.
  • For the apples: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Place the apple halves core-side down on a flat surface. Before slicing, place chopsticks or wooden spoons on either side of them to make sure you don't cut all the way through. Slice almost all the way to the bottom of each apple half at 1/4-inch intervals, then place them on a sheet pan.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon of the butter, 1 tablespoon of the brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of the apple pie spice and the orange juice in a pitcher. Drizzle over the apples, making sure they are well coated and the drizzle goes into the slits. Bake until they are just starting to get tender, about 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, mix together the oats, almonds, salt, remaining melted butter, remaining brown sugar, orange zest and remaining apple pie spice. Sprinkle the oat mixture over the apples, making sure to get some between the slices without breaking the apples. Bake until the topping is slightly crisp and golden, another 10 minutes. Drizzle with honey and serve with ice cream.

If you're a fan of apples but don't want to make the classic apple pie, then you're in luck. There are many ways you can enjoy apples without adding the pie crust, and one of the most popular ways is to prepare a dish of apples a la mode. This dessert is perfect for anyone who wants something sweet, delicious, and healthy at the same time. In this article, we will share some valuable tips on how to make apples a la mode recipes that will impress everyone at the table.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Apples

One of the essential things you should remember when making apples a la mode is to choose the right apples. Some apples are better for baking than others, so you need to make sure you select those that will hold up well during cooking. For instance, Honeycrisp, Braeburns, and Granny Smith apples are perfect options for this recipe because they retain their shape and won't turn to mush when heated.
Tip 1a: Firmness Is Key
When selecting apples for your recipe, look for those with a firm texture. Apples that are too soft or overripe won't hold up as well in the oven, and they may become too mushy, resulting in a soggy dish that won't be as appetizing.
Tip 1b: Sweet or Tart?
Another thing to consider is whether you prefer sweet or tart apples. If you have a sweet tooth, then you may want to choose apples like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady. If you prefer a more tart flavor, then Granny Smith apples are an excellent choice. You can also mix and match different varieties to create a unique taste.

Tip 2: Spice it Up

The key to making a delicious and flavorful apples a la mode recipe is to add the right spices. Cinnamon is a popular spice for apple recipes, but you can also experiment with other flavors like nutmeg, cardamom, or allspice. These spices will give your dish a warm and aromatic flavor that will make you want to go back for seconds.
Tip 2a: Lemon Juice
In addition to spices, lemon juice is another great ingredient to enhance the flavor of your apples a la mode recipe. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice will add brightness to the dish and balance the sweetness of the apples. It also prevents the apples from browning and adds a tangy note to the dessert.
Tip 2b: Vanilla Extract
Another way to add flavor to your apples a la mode recipe is by using vanilla extract. This ingredient will give your dish a pleasant aroma and taste that pairs well with the apples. You can also use almond or maple extract, depending on your preference.

Tip 3: Toppings and Sides

Once you've prepared your baked apples, you can add a variety of toppings to make them extra delicious. Some of the most popular toppings for baked apples include whipped cream, caramel sauce, and chopped nuts. You can also add a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of the dish to create the classic a la mode effect.
Tip 3a: Nuts
In terms of nuts, you can choose your favorite variety, such as pecans, almonds, or walnuts, and chop them into small pieces. Then, sprinkle them on top of the baked apples to give them a crunchy and nutty texture. You can also mix the nuts with brown sugar and butter to create a caramelized topping.
Tip 3b: Spiced Whipped Cream
Instead of regular whipped cream, you can enhance the flavor by adding spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. To make spiced whipped cream, whip heavy cream with sugar and your preferred spice until soft peaks form. Then, dollop it on top of the apples and sprinkle some extra spice for decoration.

Tip 4: Presentation

Last but not least, presentation is crucial when it comes to serving a dish of apples a la mode. You want to make sure that the dessert looks as good as it tastes, so consider using a fancy plate or bowl to create a striking presentation. You can also dust the dish with powdered sugar or cocoa powder for an elegant touch.
Tip 4a: Individual Servings
Another way to showcase your apples a la mode recipe is by serving them in individual ramekins or glass dishes. This option adds a touch of elegance to the dessert, and it's also perfect for portion control. You can also garnish each dish with a mint leaf or a slice of apple for an extra fancy touch.
Tip 4b: Adding Color
Lastly, you can add some color to your apples a la mode recipe by using different colored apples. For example, you can use green apples, red apples, and yellow apples to create a colorful and visually stunning dish. You can also add some raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries to create a fruity and vibrant topping that contrasts with the baked apples.

Conclusion

In summary, making an apples a la mode recipe is a great way to enjoy the sweet and tart flavor of apples without the hassle of making a pie. By following these valuable tips, you can create a delicious, flavorful, and visually striking dessert that will impress your guests. Remember to choose the right apples, add your favorite spices, top with delicious additions, and present your dish in style.
