Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 16

1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon dijon mustard
1 teaspoon pickle juice
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 large onions (thin sliced)
12 ounces 85/15 ground beef
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
8 slices rye bread
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 swiss cheese slices
4 cheddar cheese slices

Steps:

  • In a bowl, add mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix until smooth. Set aside.
  • In a skillet over medium-low heat, add olive oil. When warm, add onions to pan and cook until softened and deep golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. (If onions begin to dry out or look like they're going to burn, add a splash of water to the pan and reduce the heat slightly.) Remove from heat and set aside.
  • In a bowl, add ground beef, salt, pepper, and worcestershire sauce. Mix to combine and form into four thin, oblong patties (shape patties to match the shape of your bread). In a skillet over medium heat, add patties and cook until browned on both sides. Remove from heat and set aside. Wipe out any excess grease from the pan.
  • Butter one side of each piece of bread. In a skillet over medium heat, layer your sandwiches as so: one slice of bread (buttered side down), one slice of swiss cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, secret sauce, slice of cheddar cheese, and one slice of bread (buttered side up). Cook until golden brown on the bottom, flip, and cook until golden brown on the opposite side (this should take 1-2 minutes per side).

A quick, easy, and basic recipe for patty melts. I used Jewish rye bread but any bread will work as long as it's rye. I double the cheese but feel free to use 1 slice per patty melt.

Looking to recreate Applebee's Classic Patty Melt at home? With a few simple tips and tricks, you can make a delicious and authentic version of this popular menu item in your own kitchen. Here are some valuable tips to keep in mind as you perfect your Applebee's Classic Patty Melt copycat recipe. 1. Choose the Right Bread One of the keys to a good patty melt is the bread. Applebee's uses marbled rye bread, which has a distinct flavor and texture that pairs well with the other ingredients. Look for a high-quality marbled rye bread at your local bakery or grocery store to use as the foundation for your patty melt. 2. Make Homemade Thousand Island Dressing Another important component of the patty melt is the Thousand Island dressing. While you could use store-bought dressing, making your own can take your recipe to the next level. Start with a base of mayonnaise, ketchup, and sweet relish, then add in chopped pickles, onion, and celery for extra flavor and texture. 3. Use Ground Chuck for the Patty The patty is obviously the star of the patty melt, so it's important to choose the right type of ground beef. Applebee's uses ground chuck, which has a higher fat content than leaner cuts like sirloin or round. This makes the meat juicier and more flavorful. Look for ground chuck with a fat content between 15% and 20%. 4. Season the Meat Generously To really make the patty flavorful, you need to season it well. Applebee's doesn't give away their exact spice blend, but you can use a combination of salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder to mimic the flavor profile. Don't be shy with the seasoning - you want to really taste it in every bite. 5. Cook the Patty to the Right Temperature Cooking the patty to the right temperature is crucial for a juicy and delicious patty melt. For medium-rare, cook the patty until it reaches an internal temperature of 130-135°F. For medium, aim for 140-145°F. And for medium-well, cook to 150-155°F. Use a meat thermometer to ensure accuracy. 6. Sauté the Onions Low and Slow Caramelized onions are an important part of the patty melt's signature flavor. To get them just right, cook them low and slow in a mixture of butter and olive oil until they're browned and soft. This can take up to 30 minutes, but it's worth it for the rich, sweet flavor. 7. Toast the Bread and Cheese Once you've assembled your patty melt, it's time to toast it to perfection. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cook until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melty. Covering the skillet with a lid can help the cheese melt evenly. 8. Serve with Pickles and Fries For the full Applebee's experience, serve your patty melt with a side of dill pickles and crispy fries. The acidity of the pickles helps cut through the richness of the sandwich, while the fries add crunch and saltiness. With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to creating a delicious and authentic Applebee's Classic Patty Melt copycat recipe. Don't be afraid to experiment and adjust ingredients to suit your own tastes - that's the beauty of cooking at home.
