Steps:

- Add all dry ingredients, except yeast, to the pan.
- Form a well in dry ingredients and carefully pour in the yeast.
- Bake on "Sweet" Bread setting and choose your crust color, if applicable.
- Press start!
- (Note: The directions don't indicate to add the walnuts at the "beep", where you'd normally add fruit or nuts. Of course, you may hold them out and add them at the beep if you prefer.).
APPLE WALNUT BREAD (BREAD MACHINE)
This is for a bread machine, but can also be shaped by hand if you desire. I have done this with half white whole wheat flour (King Arthur) and it works well, too. If your machine has a "sweet" setting, use that, as it will keep the high-sugar contents from getting dark too fast.

Steps:
- 1. Measure all ingredients into the bread machine pan, in the order given. Select the "sweet" or "basic" setting. Start machine and operate according to manufacturer's instructions.
- 2. If desired to shape by hand, operate machine using "dough only" setting. Remove dough from machine when done, cover, and let rest 20 minutes.
- 3. Shape bread into a braid by dividing into 3 parts and rolling out into thin tubes, then braid together. Place on greased baking sheet. Brush with an egg wash. (Or place dough into well greased bread pan.) Allow to rise in warm place until doubled, about 45-60 minutes. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove immediately from pan and cool on wire rack.

Tips and Tricks
Here are some tips and tricks to get the best results when making apple walnut bread in a bread machine:- Make sure to use warm water when adding the liquid ingredients to the bread machine. Cold water will slow down the yeast activation and may result in an uneven loaf.
- You can substitute some of the bread flour with whole wheat flour for a healthier version of the bread.
- To chop the walnuts and apples, use a sharp knife or a food processor. Make sure the pieces are small enough to incorporate into the dough easily.
- If you don't have applesauce, you can substitute it with an equal amount of mashed bananas or pumpkin puree.
- When adding the nuts and fruit to the dough, make sure to press them gently into the dough to avoid air pockets.
- You can add some cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough for extra flavor.
- Allow the bread to cool completely before slicing to prevent it from crumbling.
