Time 1h15m

Yield 20

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 teaspoons salt
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 ⅓ cups shortening
2 egg yolks, beaten
½ cup milk
10 apples - peeled, cored and sliced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

On a lightly floured surface, roll out half of the dough to 1/8 inch thickness or until big enough to cover the bottom of the jellyroll pan with a little hanging over the sides.
  • Arrange the slices of apple to evenly cover the bottom crust. In a small bowl, stir together the 2 tablespoons of flour with the sugar and cinnamon. APPLE CRISP WITH OAT TOPPING

Apple Crisp with Oat Topping image

This is the best dessert for the early fall when the sweet and firm apples are just in season. Use the best quality cinnamon you can get and get it from a spice merchant or even a store where you can get it bulk; it does make a difference. Within ten minutes of going in the oven the scent will fill the house and neighbors you loaned things to years ago will return them just to invite themselves in and wonder aloud if there is any left (Note: there isn't). Optional accompaniments would be caramel sauce, ice cream, and whipped cream.

Tips for Choosing the Right Apples

When it comes to apple slices with creamy topping, the type of apple you use is crucial in determining the overall taste and texture. Here are some tips on how to choose the right apples for this recipe:
Go for Fresh and Crisp Apples
The best apples for making apple slices with creamy topping are those that are fresh and crisp. Avoid using apples that are soft or mealy as they won't have the same texture and are not as flavorful.
Select Juicy and Tart Apples
Juicy and tart apples are perfect for this recipe, as they complement the sweet and creamy toppings. Some of the best apple types to use include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.
Avoid Apples that Turn Brown Easily
It's important to choose apples that won't turn brown quickly, as this can affect the presentation of the final product. Some apples that tend to brown easily include Golden Delicious and Fuji, so it's best to avoid them when making apple slices with creamy topping.

Tips for Preparing the Apples

Once you have chosen the right apples, the next step is to prepare them for the creamy topping. Here are some valuable tips for preparing the apples:
Remove the Skin
For a smoother and creamier texture, it's best to remove the skin from the apples before slicing them. Use a peeler or a sharp knife to carefully remove the skin, making sure to get rid of any bruises or blemishes on the apples.
Slice the Apples Uniformly
To ensure that the apple slices cook evenly and look presentable, it's important to slice them uniformly. Use a sharp knife to slice the apples into thin wedges or pieces, making sure to remove the core and the seeds.
Squeeze Lemon Juice on the Apples
Squeezing some lemon juice on the apple slices will not only give them a tangy flavor but also prevent them from turning brown. This is especially important if you're preparing the apple slices in advance.

Tips for Making the Creamy Topping

The creamy topping is what makes the apple slices with creamy topping recipe special. Here are some valuable tips on how to make the perfect creamy topping:
Use High-Quality Ingredients
To get the best results, it's important to use high-quality ingredients when making the creamy topping. Go for fresh or organic cream cheese, heavy cream, and vanilla extract to give the topping a rich and flavorful taste.
Whip the Cream Cheese and Heavy Cream to Soft Peaks
To make the perfect creamy topping, you need to whip the cream cheese and heavy cream to soft peaks. This will give the topping a light and fluffy texture that will complement the crunchy apple slices.
Add Your Desired Flavorings
Some of the most popular flavorings for creamy toppings include vanilla extract, cinnamon, and honey. You can experiment with different flavorings to achieve the taste you desire.
Chill the Topping Before Serving
It's best to chill the creamy topping for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. This will also give the topping a firmer texture that won't melt quickly when served.

Conclusion

Making apple slices with creamy topping is an enjoyable and easy recipe that anyone can make. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that you get the perfect apple slices with a creamy topping every time. Remember to choose the right apples, prepare them correctly, and make the perfect creamy topping, and you will be sure to impress your family and friends with this delectable treat.
