EASIEST APPLE ROSES

Easiest Apple Roses image

Don't worry, this edible bouquet of roses is way easier than it looks, thanks to a simple rolling trick. Recipe courtesy Brett Long.

Provided by Food.com

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h20m

Yield 10 roses

Number Of Ingredients 6

butter, for greasing pan
2 lemons, juice of
2 large red apples
3 tablespoons apricot preserves
1 (17 ounce) box of puffy pastry dough
2 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter 10 cups in a standard 12-cup muffin tin. Set aside.
  • In a medium pot, combine 8 cups water and lemon juice. Bring to a boil over high-heat and reduce to a brisk simmer.
  • Cut the apples in half. Remove core and cut apples crosswise into paper-thin slices. Transfer slices to simmering acidulated water. Cook until slices bend easily, about 3-4 minutes. They be soft enough to bend but not break when rolled. Drain and transfer to a plate or small baking sheet.
  • Combine apricot preserves and 2 tablespoons water in a small bowl. If apricot preserves is very firm, transfer to microwave and heat gently, stirring at 15-second intervals, until mixture is well-combined and smooth. Set aside to cool.
  • On a lightly floured work surface, roll pastry to 16" x 10", with the long side parallel to the bottom edge of the work surface. Using a pizza cutter, cut dough in half vertically, and then horizontally, at 2-inch intervals. You should have ten 2" x 8" strips.
  • Brush one strip with apricot mixture. Arrange apple slices, round side up, on top portion of dough strip, slightly overlapping one another. Each slice should look like an upside-down U, with its rounded, skin-on edge sticking out over the top edge of the dough. Fold the bottom half of the dough up to meet the top half, and press lightly to seal.
  • Starting from one end, carefully roll dough, keeping the apple slices in place. Seal the edge at the end with apricot mixture, and place into prepared muffin tin. Repeat with remaining strips. Sprinkle granulated sugar on top of each rose, about ¾ teaspoon each.
  • Transfer muffin tin to oven and bake until golden and pastry is cooked through, about 50 minutes. Carefully remove roses and let cool on a rack before serving.

BAKED APPLE ROSES

Baked Apple Roses image

I don't know about you, but when fall hits, all I want are pumpkin spice drinks to warm up with, hot stew in the crock pot waiting for me when I get out of work, and the smell of baked apple treats in the air as often as possible. And while classic fall favorites, like apple pie and apple crisp, are delicious, I always get excited by the prospect of a new apple treat I've never tried before. This particular treat has exploded all over Pinterest this year, and with good reason. Apple roses are easy to make, have an absolutely gorgeous presentation, and best of all, taste amazing. Here's the simple process behind making these:

Provided by mitzydillman

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h15m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 apples, cored and halved (leave the skin on)
1/2 lemon, juice of
3 tablespoons fruit preserves (I used apricot but you can use your favorite fruit)
2 tablespoons water (plus more for apple soak)
1 sheet puff pastry
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat Oven to 375 degrees.
  • - Put apple slices in microwave safe bowl. Fill bowl with water and juice from half a lemon. Use enough water to make sure apple slices are covered by water. Microwave for 3 minutes. This will soften the apple slices and make them more pliable for rolling up.
  • - Next grab a sheet of puff pastry. Flour your board and roll out the puff pastry enough to make 6 strips at 3 inches wide. I scored and cut mine with a pizza wheel put you can use a knife.
  • - In a bowl mix your favorite fruit preserves with a couple tablespoons of water. Then spoon out the preserves in the center of the strip of puff pastry.
  • - Next place the apple slices long ways halfway on the strip. Keep adding slices until you reach the end. Then fold the puff pastry over the bottom of the apple slices.
  • - Roll up the puff pastry and place in a greased muffin tin.
  • - Bake the apple roses for 35-45 minutes.
  • - Pull out of oven and let cool for 5 minutes.
  • This would be such a beautiful dessert for any occasion, but I am definitely bookmarking it for Thanksgiving. I know my family will be so impressed by these (and it doesn't hurt that they'll think I spent a ton of time on them!).
  • Have you tried making apple roses before? What flavor would you use? Blueberry, cherry, orange?.

The tarte tatin is a dessert consisting of caramelized apples on top of a pastry crust that is then inverted onto a plate. In the early 2000s, French pastry chefs began creating roses by slicing and rolling apples into pastry to create beautiful, edible roses. Apple roses recipe was a hit and soon, people all over the world began trying out this culinary masterpiece.

Preparation Process

Preparing apple roses involves a relatively simple process. The first step is to prepare the apple slices. The apple should be sliced very thinly, preferably with a mandoline, to ensure uniformity. Next, the apple slices are placed in a bowl filled with lemon juice to prevent browning. Once the apple slices are ready, it’s time to prepare the puff pastry. Puff pastry should be defrosted if it was bought frozen, and it should be rolled out on a floured surface. The pastry should be cut into rectangular shapes, and a thin layer of jam or preserve should be spread over the pastry. The apple slices are then placed on the pastry, with the skins of the apples facing outwards. Once the apple slices are arranged on the pastry, the pastry is then folded up and over the apples to create a roll. The rolls should then be placed in a muffin tin and baked until golden brown. Once the apple roses have baked, they can be decorated with a dusting of powdered sugar or drizzled with honey or caramel sauce.

Valuable Tips When Making Apple Roses

Apple roses are beautiful and delicious treats that can be served as desserts, snacks, or even as a part of a breakfast spread. These elegant apple creations use thin slices of apple, rolled-up and shaped in the appearance of rose petals. Making apple roses can seem intimidating, but there are valuable tips to make the process easy and stress-free. In this article, we will discuss some of these tips that will help you create beautiful and tasty apple roses every time.
Choose the Right Apples
The first and perhaps the most critical aspect when making apple roses is choosing the right apples. While apples may seem like a straightforward fruit, some types are better suited for baking and cooking than others. Apples with a firm flesh, such as fuji, granny smith, or honeycrisp, are the best for making apple roses as they hold their shape during baking and are less likely to turn to mush. If you pick apples that are too soft or overripe, they could easily disintegrate during baking, making the roses unpleasant to look at and chewy in texture. Make sure to choose fresh, ripe, and firm apples for the best results when making apple roses.
Use a Mandoline Slicer
One of the biggest challenges when making apple roses is cutting the apples thinly and uniformly. Using a knife can be time-consuming and sometimes results in uneven and thicker slices. Therefore, investing in a mandoline slicer can make the process effortless and create precise slices every time. A mandoline slicer is a kitchen gadget that allows you to make uniform, paper-thin slices of fruits and vegetables. It comes with adjustable blades that let you cut the apple into the thickness you desire. Plus, it saves you time and ensures even slices, which makes the preparation process easier and quicker.
Soak the Apple Slices in Lemon Juice
After you have sliced the apples, it is essential to soak them in a bowl of cold water mixed with lemon juice to prevent browning. Apples naturally oxidize when exposed to air, which changes their color from white to brown. While the taste is not affected, the unsightly appearance can ruin the presentation of your apple roses. Lemon juice, which is acidic, slows down the oxidation process, keeping the apple slices from turning brown. It is important to note that you should avoid soaking the apple slices for too long to prevent the lemon juice from affecting the taste or making them mushy.
Arrange the Apple Slices in a Single Layer
When it comes to assembling the apple roses, the key is to arrange the slices in a single layer. Overlapping the slices can cause the rose to appear lumpy or uneven. Instead, place the slices in a straight line, with each slice overlapping only the previous slice by half an inch. Make sure that the slices are tightly packed together when you roll them to create a rose-like shape. This will help the petals stay together during baking and prevent the apple slices from coming apart.
Brush with Jam or Syrup for Extra Flavor
Once your apple roses are assembled, it is time to give them extra flavor by brushing them with jam or syrup. This step is optional but can enhance the taste of apple roses. Brushing the roses with raspberry, apricot, or strawberry jam, or honey or maple syrup, can enhance their sweetness and add a light glaze to the petals. It also helps to keep the apple slices moist and juicy during baking.
Bake at the Right Temperature
Baking the apple roses at the right temperature is crucial for achieving the perfect texture and appearance. Baking them too hot or too low can cause the apple slices to burn or become too soft and mushy. For the best results, bake at a temperature of 375°F for 40-45 minutes, or until the roses are golden brown and the petals look crispy. Keep an eye on the roses during baking to prevent them from burning.
Serve Warm with Ice Cream or Whipped Cream
Once the apple roses are baked to perfection, it is time to serve them while they are still warm. One of the best ways to enjoy apple roses is to serve them with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top. The combination of warm apple roses, cold ice cream, and airy whipped cream creates an irresistible dessert that is perfect for any occasion. You can also sprinkle some cinnamon or powdered sugar on top for a touch of sweetness and flavor.

Conclusion

Making apple roses may seem challenging, but it is easy when you know the right tips and tricks. Choosing the right apples, using a mandoline slicer, soaking the slices in lemon juice, arranging them in a single layer, brushing with jam or syrup, baking at the right temperature, and serving them warm with ice cream or whipped cream are some of the most valuable tips to keep in mind. By following these tips, you can create delicious and stunning apple roses that are sure to impress your guests and satisfy your taste buds.
