Apple raisin cream pie is a delicious dessert that combines the perfect balance of tart and sweet flavors. While the recipe can vary slightly depending on the cook, the basic ingredients usually include sliced apples, raisins, cream, and a flaky pie crust.

Ingredients

Pie crust:
  • All-purpose flour
  • Salt
  • Unsalted butter
  • Cold water
Filling:
  • Apples
  • Raisins
  • Heavy cream
  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Eggs

Recipe instructions

Step 1: Make the pie crust
To make the pie crust, start by combining the all-purpose flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Cut the unsalted butter into small cubes and mix it into the flour with a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse sand. Slowly add cold water to the mixture, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together in a ball. Divide the dough in half and wrap each half in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Step 2: Prepare the filling
To prepare the filling, peel and slice the apples into thin slices. Mix the sliced apples, raisins, heavy cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and eggs in a large mixing bowl until well combined.
Step 3: Roll out the crust and assemble the pie
Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C). Roll out one half of the dough on a floured surface and lay it into a 9-inch pie pan. Pour the apple and cream mixture into the crust. Roll out the second half of the dough and cut it into strips to make a lattice crust on top of the pie. Alternatively, you can cut the dough into rounds and arrange them in a circular pattern on top of the pie. Brush the top of the crust with a beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
Step 4: Bake the pie
Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for an additional 40-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Apple raisin cream pie is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion, especially during the holiday season. However, making an apple raisin cream pie can be a daunting task for beginners, and even for experienced bakers. In this article, we will share valuable tips that you can use to make the perfect apple raisin cream pie recipe. These tips will guide you through the preparation process, from choosing the right ingredients to baking the pie to perfection. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced baker, these tips will help you impress your guests with a delicious apple raisin cream pie.

Tips for Choosing the Right Ingredients

The success of your apple raisin cream pie recipe depends on the quality of the ingredients you use. Here are some valuable tips to help you choose the right ingredients for your pie:
1. Apples
Choose apples that are firm, crisp, and tart. Tart apples, such as Granny Smith, work best in pies because they hold their shape when baked and balance out the sweetness of the other ingredients. Be sure to peel and core the apples before using them in your recipe.
2. Raisins
Choose plump, moist raisins. You can use either dark or golden raisins, depending on your preference. Soak the raisins in warm water for 10-15 minutes before using them in your recipe to plump them up.
3. Cream
Choose heavy cream with a high fat content. The higher the fat content, the richer and creamier the filling will be. Do not use low-fat or non-fat cream because they will not produce the desired texture.
4. Spices
Choose warm spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. These spices complement the sweetness of the pie filling and add a warm, cozy flavor. Be sure to use fresh, high-quality spices for the best flavor.

Tips for Preparing the Pie Crust

The crust is the foundation of your apple raisin cream pie. Here are some valuable tips to help you prepare a perfect crust:
1. Use Cold Ingredients
Chill your ingredients, including your flour, butter, and water, before making the dough. This will help the dough come together and prevent the butter from melting, resulting in a flakier crust.
2. Do Not Overwork the Dough
Handle the dough with care and do not overwork it. Overworking the dough will activate the gluten in the flour, resulting in a tough crust. Work the dough until it just comes together, and then chill it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out.
3. Roll Out the Dough Evenly
Roll out the dough in a circular shape, making sure that it is even in thickness. This will ensure that the dough cooks evenly and is not over or under-cooked in certain areas. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface, and use a rolling pin to gently roll it out from the center to the edges.
4. Blind Bake the Crust
Blind baking involves baking the crust without the filling. This will help the crust hold its shape and prevent it from becoming soggy. To blind bake the crust, line it with parchment paper or aluminum foil and fill it with pie weights or dried beans. Bake the crust in a preheated oven at 425°F for 15 minutes, then remove the weights and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until it is lightly golden-brown.

Tips for Making the Pie Filling

The filling is the star of your apple raisin cream pie. Here are some valuable tips to help you make a delicious and creamy filling:
1. Cook the Apples and Raisins First
Cook the apples and raisins in a large saucepan with some sugar, spices, and lemon juice until they are tender and all the liquid has been absorbed. This will help concentrate the flavors and prevent the filling from becoming too watery.
2. Make the Cream Filling Separately
Make the cream filling separately by mixing together the cream, sugar, cornstarch, eggs, and vanilla extract. This will ensure that the cream filling is smooth and creamy without any lumps.
3. Combine the Fillings
Combine the cooked apples and raisins with the cream filling, and mix well to combine. Pour the filling into the blind-baked crust, and smooth it out with a spatula. Be sure to leave a little room at the top of the crust for the filling to expand during baking.
4. Bake the Pie
Bake the pie in a preheated oven at 350°F for 35-45 minutes until the filling is set and the crust is golden-brown. Allow the pie to cool completely before serving.

Tips for Serving the Pie

Serving a delicious apple raisin cream pie can be just as challenging as making it. Here are some valuable tips to help you serve your pie like a pro:
1. Serve with Whipped Cream
Serve your apple raisin cream pie with a dollop of whipped cream for added creaminess and sweetness.
2. Top with Caramel Sauce
Drizzle caramel sauce over the whipped cream for added flavor and texture. You can make your own caramel sauce by heating sugar and cream in a saucepan until it becomes thick and caramel-colored.
3. Pair with Coffee or Tea
Serve your apple raisin cream pie with a hot cup of coffee or tea for the perfect dessert pairing.
4. Store Properly
Store leftover pie in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Cover the pie with plastic wrap or a lid to prevent it from drying out.

Conclusion

Making an apple raisin cream pie recipe can be a challenging but rewarding experience. With these valuable tips, you can make the perfect pie that is sure to impress your guests. Remember to choose high-quality ingredients, prepare the crust and filling with care, and serve your pie with whipped cream and caramel sauce for added sweetness and flavor.
