BAKED HAM AND APPLES
WHEN Mother wanted to serve ham, she went to the smokehouse, took one down from the rafters and sliced off as much as was needed. The rest was hung up again. This recipe is great if you use real smoked ham with no water added. When Mother prepared it this way, the flavor was especially sweet and buttery. -Marjorie Schmidt, St. Marys, Ohio

Steps:
- 1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. 2. Score the skin on the Ham in a diamond shape pattern. Insert the Whole Cloves into the skin. 3. Place the Apple Slices in a single layer in a 9 x 13 baking dish or roasting pan. Then set the Ham cut side down on top of the Apple Slices. 4. Whisk together the Syrup and the Mustard in a small bowl. 5. Brush the Syrup mixture over the entire skin on the Ham 6. Next we are going to add the Apple Cider to the bottom of the pan. A little tip, set the pan on the rack in the oven, then pour the Apple Cider in the bottom of the pan. It helps to prevent spilling the Apple Cider. That would be a mess to clean up in the oven! 7. Place a tent of foil loosely over the top of the Ham. This helps to retain the moisture in the pan which in turn keeps the Ham moist. 8. Bake the Ham for 1 & 1/2 to 2 hours. Look for an internal temperature of about 140 degrees. All ovens cook differently so have a meat thermometer handy and start checking the temperature at about 40 minutes to ensure you are on track with your cooking time. Remember this style of Ham is cooked, so in essence we are just warming it up and giving it a flavor boost. You don't want to serve a dry overcooked Ham.
HAM WITH MIXED FRUIT
Apple pie filling and fruit cocktail are combined with a little brown sugar to create a sweet chunky sauce that nicely complements ham steaks. "I make this often for birthdays, and it's delicious," she assures. "It can be reheated, but I never have leftovers. "For easy cleanup, I sometimes place the ham on a large piece of heavy-duty foil, put the fruit mixture on top, then pull up the corners of the foil and twist them to form a bundle," she explains. "I pop it in the oven to bake, and when it's done, there's no pan to wash."

The Ingredients
To create this mouth-watering dish, you will need a cooked ham, apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, butter, and flour. The ham can be a fully cooked spiral ham or a country ham that’s been cured and smoked. Apples are an essential component of this recipe, and tart apples such as Granny Smith apples work well. Brown sugar adds sweetness and caramelizes with butter to create a thick and flavorful glaze. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves add warmth and depth to the recipe, while butter and flour are used to make a roux that acts as a thickener for the glaze. The Cooking Process
The first step in making apple pie ham is to preheat your oven to 350°F. Place the ham in a baking dish and set it aside. Next, peel and slice the apples into thin slices and set them aside for later. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and cook for a minute until it forms a paste. Add in the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, and whisk until the mixture is smooth. Continue whisking for an additional minute until the glaze starts to thicken. Once the glaze has thickened, pour it over the ham, making sure to cover the entire surface. Arrange the sliced apples on top of the glazed ham and cover the pan with aluminum foil. Bake the ham covered for an hour and a half or until it’s heated through. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until the glaze is bubbly and caramelized.Variations of Apple Pie Ham Recipe
There are many variations of apple pie ham recipes that you can try. Here are a few ideas:Slow-Cooked Apple Pie Ham
Instead of baking the ham, you can slow-cook it in a crockpot for a more tender and juicy consistency. Place the ham in the crockpot and layer sliced apples on top. Prepare the glaze as you would for the baked ham recipe and pour it over the ham and apples. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4-6 hours.Grilled Apple Pie Ham
For a unique twist on the recipe, try grilling the ham instead of baking it. Brush the ham with the glaze and place it on a preheated grill. Grill for 10-15 minutes on each side, basting with glaze as needed. Add sliced apples to the grill during the last few minutes of cooking.Apple Pie Ham Casserole
To turn this into a casserole dish, cube the ham and layer it in a baking dish with sliced apples. Pour the glaze over the ham and apples and bake in the oven at 375°F for 30-40 minutes, or until the ham is heated through and the apples are tender. Conclusion
In conclusion, apple pie ham recipes offer a flavorful and unique way to enjoy ham during the fall and holiday season. This dish is perfect for a family dinner or a holiday gathering, and the variations of the recipe make it versatile and exciting to prepare. Apple pie ham is a delicious recipe that combines sweet apple flavors with savory ham. It’s easy to prepare and can be served as a main course or a side dish. The recipe typically involves cooking a ham with a glaze made from apple jelly or apple cider, along with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
Valuable Tips for Apple Pie Ham Recipes
1. Choose the Right Type of Ham
When making apple pie ham, it’s important to choose the right type of ham. For the best results, choose a smoked ham, spiral ham, or bone-in ham with some fat content. These types of ham will be juicier and more tender.
2. Use Fresh Apples
Using fresh apples in your recipe will give your apple pie ham a more authentic and flavorful taste. Choose apples that are firm and not overripe. Granny Smith apples are a good choice because they have a tart flavor that pairs well with the sweet glaze.
3. Make Your Own Glaze
While you can use store-bought apple jelly or cider for your glaze, making your own glaze is easy and can add more flavor to your ham. To make your own glaze, mix apple juice or apple cider with brown sugar, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
4. Score the Ham
Scoring the ham (or making shallow cuts into the surface of the ham) will help the glaze penetrate the meat and give it more flavor. Use a sharp knife to score the ham in a diamond pattern.
5. Baste the Ham Regularly
To ensure that your apple pie ham is juicy and flavorful, baste it regularly with the glaze while it cooks. This will help the flavors of the glaze seep into the meat and keep it moist. Basting also gives the ham a nice, glossy appearance.
6. Use a Meat Thermometer
Using a meat thermometer is important when cooking ham because it will ensure that the ham has reached a safe internal temperature. The USDA recommends that ham be cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F.
7. Let the Ham Rest
Once the ham is cooked, it’s important to let it rest for at least 10 minutes before carving. This will allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, making it juicier and more flavorful.
8. Serve with Apples
Serving your apple pie ham with sliced apples will enhance the flavor and presentation of your dish. Arrange the sliced apples around the ham on the platter. You can also sprinkle some cinnamon and brown sugar over the apples for added sweetness.
9. Use Leftovers Wisely
Apple pie ham leftovers can be used in a variety of ways. You can slice the ham and serve it cold as a sandwich filling. You can also chop it up and use it in omelets or quiches. Another option is to use the leftover ham in a soup or stew.
10. Experiment with Seasonings
The best thing about apple pie ham is that you can play around with different seasonings to create your own unique flavor. Consider adding other spices like ginger, allspice, or cardamom to your glaze. You can also add a splash of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to the glaze for some acidity.
Conclusion
Following these valuable tips will help you make a delicious and flavorful apple pie ham. Whether you’re serving it for a special occasion or as a weeknight meal, your family and guests will be impressed by the delicious taste and aroma of this dish.
