TUNA SALAD SANDWICH WITH APPLES AND WALNUTS

Tuna Salad Sandwich with Apples and Walnuts image

This dish can be served as a sandwich filling or as a stand-alone salad accompanied by favorite lettuces and veggies. We use canned tuna packed in spring water because it's lighter than tuna packed in oil, and we make sure the apple is tart and crisp. Granny Smith apples are fine, but also Mutsu, Honeycrisp, or any good local crispy, tart apple will do. Add half the dressing at first and see if you need more-it's up to you how well coated you want the tuna and apples to be.

Yield serves 4

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/4 cup chopped walnuts
3/4 cup mayonnaise, homemade (page 284) or store-bought
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
2 crisp, tart apples, such as Granny Smith, Mutsu or Honeycrisp, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/8-inch cubes
3 small cans (about 18 ounces total) canned tuna in spring water, drained and separated into chunks
6 tablespoons finely diced red onion
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
8 slices multi-grain bread

Steps:

  • Toast the walnuts in a small nonstick skillet over medium heat for 2 minutes, or until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Alternatively, roast the walnuts in a preheated 300°F oven for 10 minutes, or until they smell toasted. Remove the walnuts to a plate and set aside to cool.
  • Whisk together the mayonnaise, sugar, and cider vinegar in a small bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the seasonings as needed.
  • Combine the walnuts, apples, tuna, red onion, and parsley in a bowl. Toss with half the dressing. Add more dressing, if desired.
  • Spread the salad over 4 slices of bread. Top with the other 4 slices. Cut each sandwich in half, and serve.

Apple kraut tuna sandwich recipes are an excellent choice for those looking for a delicious sandwich loaded with healthy ingredients. This sandwich is a tasty take on the traditional tuna sandwich and incorporates sauerkraut for an added punch of flavor and nutrition. Here are some valuable tips to consider when making apple kraut tuna sandwich recipes. Tip 1: Use High-Quality Ingredients The success of any sandwich recipe depends on the quality of its ingredients. When making an apple kraut tuna sandwich, be sure to use high-quality ingredients. Use good quality tuna, preferably packed in water, as it's lower in calories and high in protein. Also, choose organic apples and sauerkraut free from added sugars, preservatives, or chemicals. Tip 2: Get Creative with Your Bread Choices Bread is a crucial part of any sandwich, and there are numerous choices to choose from. You can use sprouted bread, whole wheat bread, rye bread, or even sourdough bread, depending on your preference. Sprouted bread is rich in fiber and nutrients, whole wheat bread is great for maintaining blood sugar levels, and sourdough bread is more tasty and adds some tangy flavor to your sandwich. Tip 3: Add Fresh Greens Add fresh greens to your sandwich for an extra nutritional boost. You can use lettuce, spinach, arugula, or any other green you like. Greens are a great source of antioxidants and vitamins and also provide a nice crunch to your sandwich. Tip 4: Add Some Crunchy Elements Adding some crunchy elements, such as chopped walnuts, toasted almonds or pecans, will add texture to your sandwich, making it more fulfilling. The crunch will also complement the softness of the tuna and apple, balancing both texture and flavors. Tip 5: Add Some Spice For those who enjoy a bit of heat, adding a touch of spice to your apple kraut tuna sandwich recipes is a great choice. Add some sliced jalapenos or a dash of hot sauce for a little kick of heat. Similarly, adding a sprinkle of fresh herbs like basil, cilantro, or parsley can give you a refreshing and unique taste. Tip 6: Use Greek Yogurt Instead of Mayonnaise While mayonnaise is a popular ingredient for most sandwiches, using Greek yogurt instead offers numerous health benefits. Greek yogurt is high in protein and lower in calories than mayonnaise, and it has a tangy flavor that adds some zing to your sandwich without sacrificing the creamy texture. Tip 7: Consider the Contrast of Sweet and Savory An apple kraut tuna sandwich combines sweet and savory flavors. Apples are sweet, while sauerkraut is tangy and savory. Consider the contrasting flavors when making your sandwich to balance out the sweetness of the apple with the tanginess of the sauerkraut, leading to an extraordinary taste. Tip 8: Experiment with Different Combinations One of the best things about making a sandwich is the flexibility to experiment with flavors and combinations. You can alter the flavor by changing the bread, adding more greens or spices, or using a different type of nut. You can also substitute the apple for other fruits like pears, grapes, or pineapple to give the sandwich a new twist. Conclusion Apple kraut tuna sandwich recipes are great because they're easy to make, packed with nutrition, and delicious. By following these tips, you can make your sandwich as healthy or as tasty as you want. Experiment with new combinations and flavors to find the perfect sandwich that suits your taste buds.
