BAKED HAM AND APPLES

Baked Ham and Apples image

WHEN Mother wanted to serve ham, she went to the smokehouse, took one down from the rafters and sliced off as much as was needed. The rest was hung up again. This recipe is great if you use real smoked ham with no water added. When Mother prepared it this way, the flavor was especially sweet and buttery. -Marjorie Schmidt, St. Marys, Ohio

Apple ham hotcakes are a delicious and easy-to-make breakfast dish that combines sweet and savory flavors. The combination of freshly grated apple and diced ham make for a tasty and unique twist on traditional pancakes. Follow these valuable tips to achieve the perfect texture, flavor, and presentation of apple ham hotcakes.

Ingredients

Before you begin making the apple ham hotcakes recipe, gather all the necessary ingredients. You will need flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, milk, eggs, butter, finely grated apple, and diced ham. It is important to use freshly grated apples to ensure that the final product has a smooth and even texture. Similarly, ensure that the ham is diced into small pieces to ensure that it is evenly distributed throughout the hotcakes.

Preparation

To prepare the hotcake mixture, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, and butter until well combined. Slowly add the wet mixture to the dry mixture while stirring until a smooth batter is formed. Next, fold in the grated apple and diced ham until evenly distributed throughout the batter. Avoid overmixing as it can result in tough and rubbery hotcakes.

Cooking

Preheat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Use a ladle or ice cream scoop to spoon the hotcake batter onto the pan, forming circles. Cook for 2-3 minutes until bubbles begin to form on the surface of the hotcake. Flip the hotcake and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until cooked through. Repeat this process until all the batter has been used. Keep already cooked hotcakes warm in a low oven while you cook the remainder.

Serving

Serve the apple ham hotcakes immediately, topped with butter and maple syrup. Alternatively, you can serve them with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or powdered sugar. For a more savory twist, top the hotcakes with additional diced ham and grated cheese.

Valuable Tips

Below are some valuable tips to keep in mind when making apple ham hotcakes:
1. Use a non-stick pan
Using a non-stick pan ensures that the hotcakes do not stick to the bottom and burn. It also ensures that the hotcakes cook evenly and retain their shape.
2. Do not overmix the batter
Overmixing the batter can result in tough and rubbery hotcakes. Fold in the grated apple and diced ham gently to ensure that they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
3. Keep the hotcakes warm
After cooking the hotcakes, place them in a low oven to keep them warm while you cook the remaining batter. This ensures that they remain at the ideal temperature when serving.
4. Use freshly grated apples
Using freshly grated apples ensures that the hotcakes have a smooth and even texture. This also ensures that the apple flavor is prominent in the final product.
5. Dice the ham into small pieces
Dice the ham into small pieces to ensure that it is evenly distributed throughout the hotcakes. This ensures that each bite has a balanced flavor of apple and savory ham.
6. Serve with complementary toppings
Serve the hotcakes with complementary toppings such as butter, maple syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon, or powdered sugar. This enhances the flavor and presentation of the dish.

Conclusion

Apple ham hotcakes are a unique and tasty breakfast dish that is easy to make. By following these valuable tips, you can achieve the perfect texture, flavor, and presentation of the hotcakes. Experiment with different toppings to find your ideal combination of sweet and savory flavors. Enjoy!
