Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 slices challah, from middle of loaf (each about 2 inches thick)
3 ounces grated gruyere cheese (about 3/4 c)
1/4 small red onion, very thinly sliced
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
3/4 cup whole milk
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 small apple, cored peeled and thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Cut a pocket in each bread slice through the bottom crust, parallel to the cut surfaces. Do not cut through the top crust. Stuff each with half the cheese and a few onion slices.
  • Whisk together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper. Pour into a wide, shallow dish. Place stuffed bread into custard. Turn over after about 2 minutes, then let stand until most of the liquid is absorbed.
  • Heat oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Place half the apples in a single layer and cook 1 minute. Place the stuffed, soaked bread on the apples and cover with the remaining apple slices. Cook 1 minute.
  • Cover pan, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook 5 minutes. Uncover pan, increase heat back to medium, and cook until bottom is golden brown, about 2 minutes. Carefully turn bread over and cook until golden, 3-5 minutes.

APPLE-GRUYèRE FRENCH TOAST WITH RED ONION

Light and fluffy, here the bread takes on a soft, cakelike texture from its custard bath, which is a nice foil to the sharp cheese, savory onions and caramelized apple. I wouldn't go so far as to say this sandwich could replace latkes on Hanukkah. But it sure makes a nice alternative that I could see making all year long.

Time 30m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 1 3/4-inch-thick slices challah bread from middle of loaf
3 ounces grated Gruyère cheese (about 3/4 cup)
1/4 small red onion, very thinly sliced
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
3/4 cup whole milk
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 small apple, cored, quartered and very thinly sliced
Fried eggs, for serving, optional

Steps:

  • Place one slice of bread on kitchen counter, the bottom crust nearest you. Cut into bottom crust, parallel to counter, to make a pocket. Do not cut all the way to top of slice; bread should remain attached there. Tuck half the cheese and onion slices in pocket. Repeat with other slice.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Pour custard into a wide, shallow dish. Soak stuffed bread in custard, turning once halfway through, until most of the liquid has been absorbed, about 5 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add half the apple slices in a single layer and cook for 1 minute. Place bread slices in pan, covering apples. Arrange remaining apple slices on top of bread; cook 1 minute more.
  • Reduce heat to medium low, cover and cook for 5 minutes. Uncover and increase heat to medium; cook until bottoms are golden, about 2 minutes. Carefully turn bread and apples and cook until bread is golden and cheese is melted, 3 to 5 minutes. Serve topped with fried eggs if desired.

If you are a fan of french toast, you might enjoy trying out new flavors to add some variety to this classic breakfast dish. One recipe that you can consider is the apple gruyère french toast with red onion. This recipe adds a savory twist to the sweet flavors of french toast, making it a great fit for those who prefer a more complex flavor profile.

The Ingredients

To make this recipe, you will need a few key ingredients. The first is bread: you can use any type of bread you prefer, but sourdough or brioche work well for this recipe. You will also need eggs, milk, gruyère cheese, apples, red onions, butter, salt, and pepper.
Bread
The bread serves as the base for the french toast. Sourdough or brioche work well because they are hearty enough to hold up against the additional toppings used in this recipe.
Eggs
Eggs are a key ingredient in french toast as they provide the batter that you dip the bread into before frying. They also help to bind the other ingredients together.
Milk
Milk is added to the egg batter to thin it out and create a creamier consistency for the french toast.
Gruyère Cheese
Gruyère cheese is a type of Swiss cheese that has a nutty flavor and a creamy texture. It adds a savory element to the sweet french toast and pairs well with the apples and onions.
Apples
Apples provide a sweet and slightly tart flavor to the french toast. They also add a crunchy texture that complements the soft texture of the bread.
Red Onions
Red onions add a sharp and tangy flavor to the dish. They are caramelized before being added to the french toast, which gives them a sweet and savory taste.
Butter
Butter is used to fry the french toast and adds richness and flavor to the dish.
Salt and Pepper
Salt and pepper are added to taste to enhance the flavors of the other ingredients.

The Process

Once you have all of your ingredients, you can start making the apple gruyère french toast with red onion. Here are the basic steps you will need to follow:
Step One: Caramelize the onions
The first step is to caramelize the red onions. To do this, melt some butter in a pan and add sliced onions. Cook the onions over low heat until they are golden brown and soft.
Step Two: Mix the egg batter
While the onions are cooking, mix together eggs, milk, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish. Dip the bread in the egg batter, making sure it is coated on both sides.
Step Three: Fry the french toast
Melt some butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the soaked bread and cook until it is golden brown on both sides.
Step Four: Add the toppings
Once the bread is cooked, top it with slices of gruyère cheese, caramelized onions, and thinly sliced apples.

The blend of savory and sweet ingredients creates a complex and satisfying dish that is perfect for breakfast or brunch. Making apple gruyère French toast with red onion recipes can be a more unique and flavorful twist on the classic French toast dish. This dish combines the sweetness of apples with the tanginess of red onion and the savory flavor of gruyere cheese to make a truly delicious meal. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when preparing this dish to make sure it turns out perfectly every time. Below are some valuable tips to consider when making apple gruyère French toast with red onion recipes.

Choose the Right Bread

The type of bread you choose is essential to making delicious French toast, and the same is true for apple gruyère French toast with red onion recipes. The bread should be sturdy enough to hold up when soaked in the egg mixture but not so dense that it doesn't absorb the liquid. Brioche or challah bread is great for French toast as they are light and fluffy, and their surfaces have nooks and crannies that absorb the egg mixture correctly. However, plain white bread can also work. Choose a day-old bread or pre-slice your bread and let it sit out overnight to dry it out slightly, so it absorbs the egg mixture better.

Don't Over-Soak the Bread

Over-soaked bread can result in a mushy and soggy mess that ruins the taste of the dish. Make sure not to dip the bread for too long in the egg mixture; a quick dip on each side of the bread slice is usually sufficient. The bread should be soaked enough to absorb the mixture but not so much that it falls apart when cooked. You can use a fork or tongs to turn the bread slices gently, allowing them to soak up the egg mixture and get evenly coated on both sides. Remember, the less time the bread spends in the mixture, the better the result.

Use Room Temperature Eggs

When making any egg-based dish, including French toast, it's crucial to make sure the eggs are at room temperature. Using cold eggs can result in a thick and lumpy egg mixture that doesn't coat the bread evenly. The eggs should sit out at room temperature for about 30 minutes before using them.

Add Flavor with Spices

Spices and flavorings can take this dish up a notch. Apple gruyère French toast with red onion recipes can benefit from cinnamon, nutmeg, or even cardamom to add a slightly sweet and spicy flavor to the dish. A pinch of vanilla extract or orange zest can also make the dish more flavorful and fragrant.

Use the Right Temperature

For the French toast to cook correctly, the griddle should be hot enough but not too hot that the egg mixture cooks too quickly, leaving the bread undercooked. Use a medium heat setting to gently cook the bread to perfection. It's also essential to ensure the griddle or skillet is well oiled or buttered to reduce the chances of the bread sticking.

Add Apples and Red Onion

To make apple gruyère French toast with red onion recipes, it's vital to layer the apples and onions between the bread slices. This step ensures that the apples and red onions cook slightly and infuse the bread with their delicious flavors. Thinly slice the onions and apples and layer them onto the bread slices before coating with egg mixture. Use a good quality gruyere cheese to top off the dish and create a crispy top layer when broiled before serving.

Cut into Slices or Pieces

When serving, ensure that the French toast is cut into slices or pieces before plating to create a visually appealing dish. The slices should be evenly cut and served hot or warm. Garnish with fresh herbs or extra cheese. Pair with your favorite sides, such as bacon or sausage, fresh fruit, or a cup of hot coffee or tea.
Conclusion
Making apple gruyère French toast with red onion recipes can be a unique and delicious way to enjoy the classic breakfast dish. With the tips listed above, you can prepare a perfectly cooked, flavorful, and visually appealing French toast dish that's sure to impress. Remember to choose the right bread, soak it just right, add flavor with spices or seasonings, and layer with delicious apples and red onions for that extra burst of flavor. Follow these tips, and you'll have a delicious dish that your family and friends will love.
