Making apple grape syrup is an excellent way of preserving the taste of these two fabulous fruits. This type of syrup is quite useful for adding flavor to plain yogurt or mixing into cocktails. However, making the syrup can be tricky, and certain tips can help you make the best syrup. Here are seven valuable tips when making apple grape syrup recipes.

Choosing the Best Apples and Grapes

The type of apple and grape you choose significantly influences the final product's quality. When selecting grapes, go for the sweetest and freshest grapes. Just like the grapes, using sweet apples, such as Gala or Honeycrisp, bring in more flavor into the mix. However, avoid excessively tart or underripe fruits, as they will impact the taste negatively.

Preparation

Before you start cooking the syrup, wash your fruit to remove any dirt and pesticides. Also, cut off any stems and leaves that may be present. You can also peel the apples to get a clearer syrup, but this is not necessary. Slice your fruit into small pieces uniformly to ensure that they cook evenly.

Sugar Ratio

The amount of sugar you use is one of the most crucial tips when making apple grape syrup recipes. You should use 1 cup of sugar for every cup of fresh fruit. This ratio helps the syrup maintain the fruit's natural sweetness without overpowering it with sugar. You can adjust the amount of sugar depending on your preference.

Adding Spices

Spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg can add an excellent flavor to the apple grape syrup. You can add 1-1.5 teaspoons of cinnamon per 4 cups of fruit or add a pinch of nutmeg to bring out the unique flavor. However, use the spices sparingly, as you do not want the spices to mask the fruit's taste.

Cooking

Cook the apple grape syrup over medium heat until the fruits are soft and begin to release their juice. Lower the heat and cook for a further 10 minutes until the fruits are pulpy. Stir the mixture regularly to prevent it from sticking to the pot. Once this is done, strain the fruit mixture over a sieve to remove any seeds and fruit skins. Press the fruit through the sieve gently, getting rid of any remaining pulp in the mixture.

Thickening

If you prefer a thick syrup, you can add cornstarch or pectin. Pectin tends to work best in this case. Add two tablespoons of pectin for every four cups of fruit. When using cornstarch, mix two tablespoons in a small amount of water, then stir into the syrup.

Storing

Once you have made the apple grape syrup, store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Properly stored, the syrup can last for several weeks. You can also can the syrup to store it for an extended period.
Conclusion
Apple grape syrup recipes are perfect for adding flavor to a variety of dishes. These tips will come in handy when preparing a delightful syrup that you can use in various ways. Remember to choose the best apples and grapes, add spices sparingly, and cook the syrup on low heat. With the right preparation, you can make a tasty syrup that will leave everyone asking for more.
