APPLE FRENCH TOAST BAKE RECIPE

Apple French Toast Bake Recipe image

Provided by á-382

Number Of Ingredients 20

FRENCH TOAST:
1 baguette, about 18 to 20-inches long
8 large eggs
3 cups milk
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
TOPPING:
1 pound sausage, crumbled & cooked (opt.)
5 to 6 apples (1 3/4 to 2 pounds fresh apples), peeled and thinly sliced; Granny Smith is a good choice
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons maple syrup
Pinch of salt
2 tablespoons melted butter
GARNISH:
Confectioners' sugar or cinnamon-sugar
Maple syrup

Steps:

  • Lightly butter a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or similar-sized casserole dish. Slice a day-old baguette into 3/4 to 1-inch slices, and lay them in the pan; you'll need about 21 slices to fill the pan, making a single layer. In a medium-sized bowl beat the eggs, then whisk in the milk, sugar, vanilla, nutmeg and salt. Pour this mixture over the bread, and let it soak in while you're preparing the topping. Brown sausage, drain & layer onto egg & bread mixture. Peel and slice the apples thinly. Toss them with the remaining topping ingredients, and spread them over the bread in the pan. I would work some of the apples into the bread mixture. Cover the pan, and refrigerate overnight; or for up to 48 hours. Remove the pan from the refrigerator, uncover it, and bake the French toast in a preheated 375°F oven for 45 to 55 minutes, until the apples are soft and the eggs set. I covered the pan with tin foil after 45 minutes & then had to bake another 45 minutes to completely bake until done. Remove from the oven, and sprinkle with the sugar of your choice, if desired; or drizzle with maple syrup. Maple syrup is best!!

The ingredients are then baked to create a custard-like texture that is perfect for brunch or breakfast. This dish is easy to make and can be prepared the night before to save time in the morning.

Ingredients Required for Apple French Toast Bake Recipe

The ingredients required to prepare the Apple French Toast Bake Recipe are simple and easy to obtain. Here are some of the essential ingredients:

1. Bread

Bread is the base of this dish, and you can use any type of bread you like. You can use French bread, brioche, or challah bread because they soak up the custard mixture very well. It's better to use a day-old or slightly stale bread because it holds up better when soaking in the custard mixture.

2. Milk and Eggs

These are the two primary ingredients that make up the custard mixture used to soak the bread. You can use whole milk, 2% milk, or even almond milk if you prefer. Eggs give the dish its signature texture and creamy taste.

3. Apples

Apples are the star of this dish. They add a sweet and juicy flavor that complements the custard and cinnamon beautifully. You can use any variety of apples, but Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are the best options.

4. Sugar and Cinnamon

Sugar and cinnamon are used to make a sweet and flavorful coating on the apples. The cinnamon adds a warm and spicy flavor to the dish, and the sugar caramelizes nicely when baked.

5. Butter

Butter adds richness and depth to the dish. It's used to coat the bottom of the baking dish and to dot on the bread to give it a buttery flavor.

How to Make Apple French Toast Bake Recipe

Here are the steps involved in making the perfect Apple French Toast Bake Recipe:

Step 1: Prepare the Apples

Peel and dice the apples into small pieces. Combine the apples, cinnamon, and sugar in a bowl and mix well until the apples are fully coated. Set the apples aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Custard Mixture

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract until fully combined. Set aside.

Step 3: Assemble the Dish

Cut the bread into small cubes and place them into a greased baking dish. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, making sure that all the bread is coated. Arrange the apple mixture on top of the bread, pressing it down slightly into the custard mixture. Dot the top of the dish with small pieces of butter.

Step 4: Bake the Dish

Cover the dish with foil and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if you want to bake it in the morning. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake the dish for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set. Once done, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Tips for Making the Best Apple French Toast Bake Recipe

Here are some tips to help you make the best version of the Apple French Toast Bake Recipe:

2. Use High-Quality Ingredients

Using high-quality ingredients such as fresh apples, good quality bread, and pure vanilla extract will ensure that the dish is delicious and flavorful.

3. Let it Soak

Allow the bread to soak in the custard mixture for at least 30 minutes before baking. This will help ensure that the bread is fully coated and moist.

4. Cover with Foil

Covering the dish with foil during the baking process will help prevent the top from burning and keep the custard moist.

5. Add Toppings

Once the dish is finished baking, you can add toppings such as powdered sugar, maple syrup, or whipped cream to make it even more decadent.

When you add the unique apple flavour to this dish, it takes it to the next level. Here are some valuable tips to create the perfect apple French toast bake.

1. Choose the Right Bread

The first and foremost tip for making a perfect apple French toast bake is to choose the right bread. A good bread base is key to any successful French toast bake. For apple French toast bake, opt for a quality bread that is hearty, has a bit of crust and is slightly stale to absorb the custard mixture. Brioche, challah, or sourdough work best for this dish.

2. Pick the Right Apples

The next crucial tip is to choose the right type of apple. A tart apple will add a nice balance to the sweetness of the dish. Granny Smith and Braeburn apples work great in apple French toast bake, but you can choose any variety of apple depending on your taste preference.

3. Prepping the Apples

Before you can add apples to your French toast bake, you need to prep them properly. Slice the apples into thin slices (¼ inch thick) and add them to a bowl of cold water with a tablespoon of lemon juice. This step will prevent the apples from browning and ensure they are perfectly cooked.

4. The Custard Mixture

The custard mixture is the heart of the French toast bake. Add eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and maple syrup together in a bowl, and whisk until well combined. The custard mixture should not be too runny; it should have a slightly thick consistency that will provide a creamy texture to the finished dish.

5. Prep the Pan and Assembly

Preparing the pan and the assembly is crucial for making the perfect French toast bake. Grease the baking dish with butter, then layer in the bread slices, and top with sliced apples. Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apples, ensuring that every slice of bread is coated evenly. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before baking.

6. Baking the French Toast Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the French toast for approximately 45 to 50 minutes. Remove the foil in the last 10 minutes of baking to allow the top to brown. The French toast bake should be firm to the touch, golden brown and the custard mixture should be set.

7. Serve with Toppings

Apple French toast bake tastes delicious on its own, but toppings can elevate the dish to an entirely new level. Add a dollop of whipped cream, a drizzle of maple syrup, or even some caramelized apples on top of the dish to enhance the flavour.
Conclusion
Making the perfect apple French toast bake requires attention to detail, precision and patience. Keep these tips in mind while preparing your next batch of French toast bake, and you will be guaranteed to create a dish that is both delicious and healthy.
