4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup light brown sugar
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and chopped
2 Gala apples, peeled, cored and chopped
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1/2 lemon, juiced
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon, divided
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 box ready-made pie crusts (recommended: Pillsbury)
Peanut oil, for frying
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Vanilla ice cream, for topping

Steps:

  • To a large saute pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar, and the apples and saute until they are tender, about 5 to 6 minutes. • In a deep-fryer or heavy-bottomed pot, heat enough peanut oil to come halfway up the sides of the pot, to 350 degrees F.
  • Whisk together the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and reserve.
  • Fry the pies, 3 at a time, in the hot peanut oil until they are golden brown and crisp, about 3 minutes. Transfer the finished pies to a paper towel-lined sheet tray. Once they are cool, toss them in the cinnamon sugar and serve with vanilla ice cream.

Valuable Tips when making Apple Crisp a la Mode Recipes

Apple crisp a la mode recipes are among the most delicious and comforting desserts out there. This dish is perfect for fall, winter or any time of year for that matter. Whether you're looking to serve it for a dinner party or just want to bake it for your family, there are a few tips that can help you achieve the perfect taste and texture. Here are some valuable tips that you should keep in mind when making apple crisp a la mode recipes:
1. Choose the Right Apples
One of the most important elements of an apple crisp a la mode recipe is the type of apples you use. You don't want to use apples that are too tart or too sweet as it can compromise the overall taste of the dish. For this type of recipe, it is best to use apples that are a bit tart but not too much so. Granny Smith apples are a popular choice as they maintain their texture and tart flavor even when baked. Other great options are Braeburn, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady. You can also mix two or three different types of apples to get a more complex flavor.
2. Don't Overload the Topping
The topping is a crucial part of any apple crisp a la mode recipe, but it's important not to go overboard. You want to strike a balance between the sweet, crunchy topping and the juicy apples underneath. The topping should be light and crumbly, not thick and so heavy that it smothers the apples. A good rule of thumb is to use enough topping to cover the apples evenly but not so much that you can't see them peeking through.
3. Make a Delicious Crumb Topping
The crumb topping is what makes an apple crisp a la mode so irresistible. To make a delicious crumb topping, you'll need flour, sugar, butter, cinnamon, and oats. It's important to use cold butter that is cut into small cubes so that when it's mixed with the other ingredients, it creates a crumbly texture that's perfect for topping the apples. Some recipes also call for chopped nuts, like pecans or walnuts, to add an extra crunch.
4. Spice it up with Cinnamon
Cinnamon is the quintessential spice for apple desserts, and apple crisp a la mode is no exception. A generous sprinkling of cinnamon over the apples before adding the crumb topping not only adds flavor but also helps to bring out the sweetness of the apples. You can also add a pinch of nutmeg or ginger to give the dish some depth and complexity of flavor.
5. Use a Cast Iron Skillet
Using a cast iron skillet to bake your apple crisp a la mode is a great way to get a perfect result every time. The skillet heats up evenly, which means that the apples cook uniformly, and the crumb topping gets crispy and browned. You can also serve the apple crisp directly from the skillet, which adds to the rustic charm of the dessert.
6. Serve it with Ice Cream
No apple crisp a la mode is complete without a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream. Adding a cold, creamy scoop of ice cream to a warm serving of apple crisp creates a perfect contrast of flavors and textures. The ice cream melts into the warm apples and crumb topping, which makes each bite even more delicious. Remember, this dessert is called "a la mode" for a reason!
7. Add a Twist to the Recipe
While traditional apple crisp a la mode recipes are always a crowd-pleaser, don't be afraid to experiment with different variations. For example, you can add raisins or dried cranberries to the apple mixture, or try adding a layer of sliced pears for a twist on the classic recipe. You can also swap out the vanilla ice cream for caramel, cinnamon or even apple flavored ice cream to take the dish to the next level.

Conclusion

Apple crisp a la mode is a classic dessert that never goes out of style. By following the tips above, you'll be able to create a delicious and unforgettable dish that your family and friends will love.
