CHICKEN APPLE STEW

Chicken Apple Stew image

I made this chicken stew on a cold autumn night when I had an excess of fresh apples. The apple adds a sweet, pleasant flavor which complements the root vegetables, resulting in a light, but delicious, dinner which warms you from the inside. Great with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese and served with sourdough rolls for dipping.

How to Make Apple Chicken Stew

To make apple chicken stew, you will first need to gather your ingredients. While there are countless recipes out there, the basic ingredients for apple chicken stew typically include:
Chicken:
Boneless, skinless chicken is typically used for this recipe. You can use chicken thighs or breasts, depending on your preference. Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces.
Apples:
Apples are a key ingredient in this dish. Tart apples, like Granny Smith, work best, as they are less likely to turn to mush during cooking. Cut the apples into bite-sized pieces, leaving the skin on.
Vegetables:
Carrots, onions, and celery are often used in apple chicken stew. Chop them into bite-sized pieces.
Herbs and Spices:
Bay leaves, thyme, and rosemary are often used to flavor the broth. Salt and pepper are also essential to season the dish.

Chicken broth is typically used as the base for apple chicken stew. You can use homemade or store-bought broth. Once you have your ingredients, it’s time to start cooking! 1. Heat a large pot over medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil and let it heat up. 2. Add your chicken to the pot and cook until it is browned on all sides, about 5-10 minutes. 3. Remove the chicken from the pot and set it aside. 4. Add your chopped vegetables to the pot and cook until they are softened, about 5 minutes. 5. Add in your chopped apples and cook for another 2-3 minutes. 6. Add in your herbs and spices (bay leaves, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper) and stir to combine. 7. Pour in your chicken broth and stir to combine. 8. Add your chicken back into the pot and stir. 9. Bring the pot to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let the stew simmer for 20-30 minutes. 10. Serve hot and enjoy!

Ingredients for Extra Flavor

While the basic recipe for apple chicken stew is delicious, there are countless ways to customize the dish to suit your taste buds. Here are some ingredients you can add to give your apple chicken stew that extra oomph:

Squash:
Adding squash to your stew can help to add a touch of sweetness and creaminess.
Sweet Potatoes:
Sweet potatoes can add a hearty, earthy flavor to your stew.
Cinnamon:
Adding a touch of cinnamon can help to bring out the sweetness of the apples in your stew.

When it comes to the fall season, one of the classic dishes for many people is a hearty apple chicken stew. The combination of savory chicken, sweet apples, and warm spices create a comforting and satisfying meal that is perfect for a chilly evening. However, making a delicious apple chicken stew can be challenging for some, especially if you're not familiar with the key ingredients and cooking techniques. In this article, we’ll share some valuable tips to help you create a delicious apple chicken stew recipe that will impress your family and friends.

The Best Type of Apples for Apple Chicken Stew Recipes

Choosing the right type of apple for your stew is crucial as it can affect the overall flavor and texture. Some of the best apples for a chicken stew recipe are Braeburn, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Jonathan. These apple varieties hold their shape well during cooking and have a sweet and tart flavor that complements the savory chicken. Avoid using Red Delicious or Gala apples as they tend to become mushy and overly sweet after cooking.

Meat Selection

The meat selection is one of the critical factors that can make or break the dish. When choosing chicken meat, it’s essential to choose the right cut that is suitable for stewing. Thighs and drumsticks are great for chicken stew recipes as they remain juicy and tender even after long hours of cooking. Chicken breasts, on the other hand, tend to dry out and become tough when stewed for an extended period. If you prefer using chicken breast, it’s recommended to cook them separately and then add them to the stew at the end.

Seasonings and Spices

The seasonings and spices used in the apple chicken stew recipe can make all the difference in terms of flavor. Common spices to use might include thyme, rosemary, garlic, paprika, or cumin. It’s best to use a blend of spices that complement each other and enhance the flavor of the stew without overpowering it. Fresh herbs like parsley, basil, or cilantro can also add brightness and flavor to the dish.

Cooking Techniques

When it comes to cooking apple chicken stew, there are various techniques that you can use to achieve a delicious and tender outcome. Here are a few cooking tips to consider:
Browning the Meat:
Before adding the meat to the pot, ensure that it’s properly seared or browned. This can help to enhance the flavors of the meat and give a nice color to the stew. Heat up a heavy-bottomed pot and add a tablespoon of oil. When the oil is hot, add the meat to the pot and cook until it’s lightly browned on all sides.
Cooking the Apples:
When cooking the apples, it’s best to add them halfway through the cooking process to avoid overcooking. Overcooked apples can quickly turn mushy and affect the texture of the stew. Instead, add them once the chicken is partially cooked and let them simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes until they’re tender.
Simmering vs. Boiling:
Simmering the stew over low heat is ideal for creating a tender and flavorful dish. Boiling the stew can cause the meat to become tough and dry, leading to an unappetizing outcome. Ensure that the pot is covered correctly to retain the moisture and allow the flavors to meld together.

Thickening Agent

To achieve a thick and hearty consistency, it’s crucial to add a thickening agent to the stew. Flour or cornstarch are common types of thickening agents used in many recipes. Mix some flour with a small amount of water and add it to the stew. Let it simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes until the stew has thickened. Alternatively, you can also use a roux (a mixture of flour and butter) to add richness and thickness to the dish.

Conclusion

In summary, a delicious apple chicken stew requires the right combination of ingredients, spices, cooking techniques, and a thickening agent. Choosing the right type of apple, cut of meat, and seasoning can significantly enhance the flavor and texture of the dish. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different spice combinations and cooking techniques to create your perfect apple chicken stew recipe. With these valuable tips, you’re well on your way to making a delicious and comforting meal that will warm your heart and soul.
