Yield 12 Servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 recipe Delicious Slicing Bread dough
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 medium Granny Smith or McIntosh apple, peeled, sliced, and coarsely chopped
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter or margarine
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans, optional

Steps:

  • Prepare the Delicious Slicing Bread, adding the vanilla extract to the dough. Set aside.
  • Lightly grease a 10-cup Bundt pan or fluted pan.
  • Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Toss 1 tablespoon of the sugar mixture over apples in a medium bowl and stir to coat. Set aside.
  • In a microwave-proof bowl, melt the butter in the microwave on medium high for 30 to 40 seconds, until melted. Stir in the brown sugar until dissolved. Pour into the bottom of the prepared pan and sprinkle half the pecans, if using, over the brown sugar mixture.
  • Spray a 1/4-cup scoop with vegetable spray. Scoop out balls of the bread dough and arrange in one layer over the pecan and brown sugar mixture. (This will yield about eight scoops or half the dough.) Sprinkle half of the remaining cinnamon sugar over the balls of dough. Spread the apples over the dough and top with a second layer of balls of dough, using all the remaining dough. Sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon sugar and the remaining pecans over the top. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and set in a warm, draft free area to rise about 45 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Remove the plastic wrap from the dough and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until the top is brown. Remove to a wire rack and cool for 10 minutes. Invert onto a serving plate. Let cool an additional 10 minutes. Pull apart or slice with a bread knife. The monkey bread is best served warm, and can be reheated in a 350°F oven for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Shortcuts:
  • Use a commercial bread mix in place of the Delicious Slicing Bread.
  • Place pecan halves in a plastic zip-top bag and seal. Crush with a rolling pin until coarsely chopped.

Its delicious doughy texture, combined with a sweet and sticky caramel glaze and chunks of fresh apples, makes it one of the most sought-after desserts across the world.

History of Monkey Bread

Although its origins are uncertain, Monkey Bread has been a popular baked good in the United States since the 1950s. It was inspired by two European breads: Hungarian sweet bread and German plaited coffee cake. Monkey bread differs from these breads in that it is sweet, and is not plaited, but rather rolled and tossed in a sweet mixture of cinnamon, sugar, and butter.

What is Monkey Bread?

Monkey bread is a type of pull-apart bread that has been made famous by its small, bite-sized pieces. It is essentially a sweet pastry made from balls of dough rolled in cinnamon sugar and baked in a bundt pan. Once baked, the pastry is turned upside down onto a serving platter, creating a glorious swirl of dough that falls apart when pulled apart. The original recipe calls for the use of cinnamon sugar, but variations like apple caramel monkey bread use other ingredients for flavorings.

How to Make Apple Caramel Monkey Bread

To make apple caramel monkey bread, you will need the following basic ingredients: dough, apples, caramel, and spices. Once you have all the ingredients, you can start following these simple steps to make apple caramel monkey bread:
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Prepare dough as you would for any bread. The dough should be soft and pliable. You can make it at home from scratch or buy it pre-made from a store.
Step 2: Roll Dough into Balls
Roll the dough into small balls, about 1-1.5 inches in size.
Step 3: Coat Dough Balls with Spice Mixture
In a separate bowl, mix together cinnamon and granulated sugar. Roll the dough balls in this mixture so that they are completely coated.
Step 4: Add Apples
Chop the apples into small cubes and scatter them around the bottom of the bundt pan. Arrange the coated dough balls over the apples.
Step 5: Make Caramel Sauce
In a separate saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar together, stirring constantly. Bring the mixture to a boil and add in cinnamon and vanilla extract. Let it cook for 1-2 minutes before pouring it over the dough balls.
Step 6: Bake
Bake the monkey bread for around 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Once done, let it cool for a few minutes before flipping it over onto a serving plate.

Apple caramel monkey bread is a classic dessert that is perfect for any occasion. It is a simple yet delicious recipe that is sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. Making monkey bread can seem daunting at first, but with the right tips and tricks, you can make a perfect apple caramel monkey bread every time.

Tip #1: Pick the Right Apples

Choosing the right apples for your monkey bread can make all the difference in the world. You want to select apples that are firm and tart. Firm apples will hold up well during baking and won't turn to mush. Tart apples will add a nice contrast to the sweetness of the caramel sauce. Some good choices for apples include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn.

Tip #2: Use High-Quality Caramel Sauce

The caramel sauce is the star of the show in this recipe. You want to make sure you use a high-quality caramel sauce. You can either make your own caramel sauce or use a store-bought variety. If you choose to make your own, be sure to follow the recipe closely and cook it to the right temperature. If you opt for a store-bought sauce, read the ingredient list carefully to ensure that there are no artificial flavors or preservatives.

Tip #3: Don't Overwork the Dough

When making the dough for the monkey bread, it's important not to overwork it. Overworking the dough can make it tough and chewy. You want to mix the dough until it just comes together and then knead it a few times to form a smooth ball. Be sure to let the dough rest for about 5 to 10 minutes before shaping it into balls.

Tip #4: Use Generous Amounts of Cinnamon Sugar

The cinnamon sugar coating is what gives monkey bread its signature flavor. You want to make sure you use generous amounts of cinnamon sugar when coating the dough balls. The cinnamon sugar will not only add flavor but will also help create a crunchy exterior on the monkey bread.

Tip #5: Arrange the Dough Balls Tightly in the Pan

When arranging the dough balls in the pan, you want to make sure they are packed tightly together. This will help create a pull-apart effect once the monkey bread is baked. You can use a bundt pan or a 9-inch cake pan to bake the monkey bread. Be sure to grease the pan well to prevent sticking.

Tip #6: Double the Recipe for Larger Crowds

If you're making monkey bread for a large crowd, you may want to consider doubling the recipe. Monkey bread is a popular dessert, and it's always a good idea to have extra on hand. You can also make the dough and caramel sauce in advance and assemble the monkey bread right before baking.

Tip #7: Customize the Recipe to Your Liking

One of the best things about monkey bread is that it's a versatile recipe that can be customized to your liking. You can add chopped nuts, raisins, or other dried fruits to the recipe for added flavor and texture. You can also adjust the amount of cinnamon sugar and caramel sauce to your liking.
Conclusion
