SIMPLE BLUEBERRY APPLE PIE

Simple Blueberry Apple Pie image

Provided by Sunny Anderson

Time 1h55m

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 1/4 cups flour, plus extra for dusting
Pinch of salt
1 stick butter, cut into small cubes and frozen
1/4 cup ice water
16 ounces fresh blueberries
2 Golden Delicious apples, cored, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch dice
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Pinch of salt
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small cubes
1 egg
2 tablespoons turbinado sugar
Special equipment: 9-inch pie pan

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • For the crust: In a food processor, add the flour and a nice pinch of salt. Pulse very lightly just to blend. Add the butter evenly around the flour and quickly pulse until the flour resembles small crumbles. Slowly pour the water through the spout until the dough begins to come together. Remove and quickly form into a disc. Tightly cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, for the filling: In a large bowl, add the blueberries, apples, sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine and set aside.
  • Remove the dough from the refrigerator and place on a lightly floured surface. Gently roll the disc into a circle big enough to fit into the pie pan and leave a 3-inch overhang. The dough should be about 1/8-inch thick. Using a pizza cutter, trim the edges of the dough. Place the dough into the pie pan and press gently against the bottom and sides to fit the dough into the pan. Pour in the fruit filling, and then scatter the butter evenly around the top of the pie. Fold the extra dough that's hanging off the edge over the top to create the top of the pie crust. Leave a hole in the center for ventilation.
  • Whisk the egg with 1 teaspoon water and brush the top with egg wash and then sprinkle with the sugar.
  • Place in the oven and bake until the crust is golden brown, about 35 minutes. Let the pie rest at least an hour before serving to let the filling set.

APPLE WALNUT PIE

Apple Walnut Pie image

My family is fond of any treat featuring apples, but this pie is the one they like best. Unlike some fruit pies, this crust doesn't become soggy, thanks to the addition of ground walnuts. Everyone agrees the flavor of nuts pairs well with apples in this fall favorite. -Evonne Wurmnest, Normal, Illinois

DEEP-DISH WINTER FRUIT PIE WITH WALNUT CRUMB

Deep-Dish Winter Fruit Pie With Walnut Crumb image

This deep-dish crumb-topped pie combines several winter fruits and confirms that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The pears become soft, the apples remain slightly firm, the figs add texture and sweetness, and the tart cranberries pop in your mouth, making this rustic pie a sensory treat. Be sure to plan ahead, as this recipe calls for chilling the dough for one hour, chilling it again after you roll it out (this reduces shrinkage of the crust during baking), and then baking the pie for over an hour. It is an hours-long process, off and on, but it is worth every minute. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a glass of apple or pear brandy (preferably from Clear Creek Distillery), it is the perfect final touch to a dinner party.

BLUEBERRY WALNUT PIE

Blueberry Walnut Pie image

This takes a couple hours to chill. The crust on this pie is really good, and thick. It will fill up your pie plate so press down as much as you can. I used a 9.5 inch pie plate so I was left with about a cup of filling that wouldn't fit...I saved it for a later breakfast topped with some granola. Two 15 oz cans of blueberry's work perfectly for this. :) You can easily get 16 slices from this pie, it is very thick and rich.

Apple Blueberry Walnut Pie is a scrumptious and delicious dessert that everybody craves. Preparing this delicacy requires a combination of different techniques and tips to achieve the right taste, texture, and consistency that will leave everyone with an unforgettable experience. In this article, we have compiled a list of valuable tips and tricks on how to make the best Apple Blueberry Walnut pie recipe that will impress your family and friends. Tip 1: Choosing the right apples Choosing the right type of apples is the first step to making a delicious pie. For an apple blueberry walnut pie, it is recommended to use granny smith or honey crisp apples. These types of apples are firm and retain their texture, even when baked. Additionally, they have a tangy flavor that compliments the sweetness of the blueberries, while the walnuts add a crunchy texture to the pie. Tip 2: Preparing the Pie Crust A pie crust is the foundation of any pie recipe. For a perfect apple blueberry walnut pie, the crust should be flaky, buttery, and crispy. This can only be achieved through careful preparation. When making the crust, it is essential to use cold butter as this will create pockets of air when baked, resulting in a flaky crust. Additionally, avoid overworking the dough as this will result in a tough crust that will not be enjoyable to eat. Tip 3: Choosing the right Blueberries When it comes to selecting blueberries, you want to look for ones that are large, plump, and firm. Try to avoid blueberries that are shriveled or damaged as they will negatively impact the overall taste of the pie. Additionally, it is recommended to use fresh blueberries as opposed to frozen ones as the latter can be too watery, resulting in a soggy pie. Tip 4: Adding Lemon Juice Lemon juice is an excellent addition to any apple blueberry walnut pie recipe. The acidity in the lemon juice helps to balance out the sweetness of the blueberries, while adding a slightly tangy flavor to the pie. Additionally, the lemon juice helps to keep the apples from turning brown and adds a bright color to the filling. Tip 5: Adding Spices Adding spices is an excellent way to elevate the flavors in your pie. For an apple blueberry walnut pie recipe, the best spices to use include cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. These spices add warmth and depth to the pie and complement the flavors of the apples and blueberries. Additionally, the combination of spices creates a unique and delicious aroma that is sure to impress. Tip 6: Preheating the Oven Preheating the oven is essential to ensuring that your pie comes out perfectly cooked. A preheated oven ensures that the pie is baked evenly, and the crust is crispy and golden brown. Depending on the recipe, the oven may need to be preheated to a specific temperature. Therefore, it is essential to read and follow the recipe to ensure that the pie is baked to perfection. Tip 7: Using an Egg Wash An egg wash is an essential step when baking an apple blueberry walnut pie. The egg wash creates a shiny and golden-brown crust that is not only visually appealing but also adds a slightly sweet flavor to the crust. Additionally, the egg wash helps to seal the pie, preventing any of the filling from leaking out during the baking process. Tip 8: Avoiding Overfilling the Pie Overfilling the pie is a common mistake that many people make when preparing an apple blueberry walnut pie. It is important to remember that as the pie bakes, the filling will expand, and if there is too much filling, it can spill out of the crust. Therefore, it is essential to leave at least 1/2 inch of space between the filling and the crust to prevent any spillover. Tip 9: Letting the Pie Cool Allowing the pie to cool completely before slicing is crucial as this allows the pie to set, and the juices to thicken. Additionally, slicing the pie while it is still hot can cause the filling to spill out and ruin the appearance of the pie. Therefore, it is recommended to let the pie cool for at least an hour before slicing. Tip 10: Serving with Whipped Cream or Ice Cream The final step to making the perfect apple blueberry walnut pie recipe is to serve it with whipped cream or ice cream. Both of these toppings add an extra layer of creaminess, and the sweetness of the whipped cream or ice cream complements the flavors of the pie perfectly. Additionally, adding a sprinkle of chopped walnuts or blueberries on top of the whipped cream or ice cream adds an extra crunch and a pop of color to the dessert. Conclusion: Making the perfect apple blueberry walnut pie recipe requires a combination of different techniques and tips. From choosing the right apples to serving with whipped cream, every step is crucial to achieving the desired taste and texture. By following the valuable tips listed above, you can make a delicious pie that everyone will love.
