One Pan Pork Chops with Apples and Onions image

This pork chops with apples and onions dish is a deliciously light and flavorful meal that's perfect for Fall. Plus, it's all made in ONE pan!

Provided by The Chunky Chef

Time 26m

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 Tbsp olive oil (divided)
3-4 oz bone-in pork chops (whatever with comfortably fit in your pan)
Kosher salt and black pepper (to taste)
3/4 cup low sodium chicken stock
1 tsp Dijon mustard (or whole-grain Dijon)
1 Tbsp fresh sage (chopped)
1 1/2 tsp fresh rosemary (chopped)
1/2 tsp fresh thyme (chopped)
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 medium apples (thinly sliced (I used Gala))
1 small red onion (thinly sliced)

Steps:

  • Season both sides of pork chops with kosher salt and black pepper. Add 1 Tbsp olive oil to large heavy bottomed pan (or skillet), and heat over MED-HIGH heat. Add pork chops to pan, leaving at least an inch between the chops to ensure even cooking and browning. Sear 3-5 minutes per side, or until pork chops are mostly done. Chops will continue cooking in the sauce later.
  • Remove pork chops to a plate.
  • In a small mixing bowl, whisk together chicken stock and mustard, set aside.
  • Add remaining 1 Tbsp oil to the pan, then add apples and onions. Cook 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season with salt, pepper, sage, rosemary, and thyme. Stir to combine.
  • Pour in stock mixture, using a wooden spoon to gently scrape the bottom of the pan to release any brown bits (those are full of great flavor).
  • Slide pork chops back into the pan, nestling them down in between the apples.
  • Cook 2-3 minutes, until pork chops are finished cooking and liquid has reduced by half.

APPLE AND ONION SMOTHERED PORK CHOPS WITH GARAM MASALA

Apple and Onion Smothered Pork Chops With Garam Masala image

Still need to obtain the dried juniper berries to make these pork chops. Looks like a great dish. Recipe comes from tigersandstrawberries.com where Barabra Fisher paired them with Recipe #292143, Recipe #291999, and some sauteed broccoli rabe.

Provided by Kitchen Witch Steph

Categories     Pork

Time 45m

Yield 2-3 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 bone-in thick cut pork loin chops
1 1/2 teaspoons garam masala
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup thinly sliced yellow onion
1 cup fresh firm tart apple, peeled and thinly sliced (Jonathan, Cortland, or Granny Smith)
1 teaspoon crushed dried juniper berries
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup marsala wine (or apple cider, apple brandy, or dry sherry)
freshly ground salt and black pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Rub garam masala evenly on both sides of each pork chop and allow to sit about fifteen minutes at room temperature.
  • Heat olive oil in a heavy bottomed cast iron skillet over medium heat.
  • When it is quite hot, add the pork chops.
  • Allow them to sit undisturbed until browned on the bottom, then turn over.
  • When brown on the second side (you will know this because the chops will no longer stick to the pan-they will move freely), add onions and apples to the pan, along with crushed juniper berries.
  • Sprinkle apples and onions with salt.
  • Cook, stirring now and then, until the onions and apples are golden brown.
  • Deglaze the pan with wine, stirring. Allow the alcohol to boil off, then turn heat down to low, and cover the pan.
  • Cook until sauce reduces to a reddish brown glaze, and the apples and onions cling to the chops.

PORK CHOPS WITH APPLES AND ONIONS

Pork Chops with Apples and Onions image

Sauteed apples and onion combine with pork chops for a tastiness that never disappoints.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Ingredients     Meat & Poultry     Pork Recipes

Number Of Ingredients 7

6 bone-in pork chops (loin or shoulder), cut 3/4 inch thick
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil or vegetable oil
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large white onion, sliced
2 to 3 apples, cored and sliced (about 3 cups)
1 cup beer, white wine, cider, or chicken broth

Steps:

  • Trim the chops of excess fat. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat a 14-inch cast-iron skillet (if you have a smaller one, you'll need to work in batches) over high heat, and then swirl in the olive oil. Lay in the pork chops and don't move them for a few minutes, to assure a good golden sear forms. Turn and brown well on the second side for a total of about 10 minutes. Transfer the chops to a warm plate.
  • Swirl the butter into the pan. Add the onion and apples. Saute until the onion slices are lightly caramelized and the apples have begun to soften, about 8 minutes. Stir in the beer or other liquid. Return chops to the pan.
  • Cook until the pork is tender, about 15 more minutes (depending on the size of the chops), turning halfway through and covering the chops with the apple mixture. If the apple mixture needs a little thickening, transfer the chops to the warm plate again and simmer the mixture on high for a few minutes to reduce. Serve the chops over rice or mashed potatoes with a large spoonful of the apple-onion mixture over the top.

Ingredients

Before getting into the cooking instructions, it's important to take note of the key ingredients used in this recipe.

Apples and Onions
This recipe calls for apples and onions as the smothering ingredients. Fuji, Granny Smith, and Honeycrisp apples are all great options for this recipe. For onions, yellow onions are the most commonly used due to their mild flavor and ability to caramelize when cooked.
Garam Masala
Garam masala is an Indian spice blend made of dried and ground spices such as cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and cardamom. It has a sweet and warm aroma and adds depth of flavor to the dish.

Cooking Instructions

To make apple and onion smothered pork chops with garam masala recipes, follow these easy steps:

Apple and onion smothered pork chops with garam masala recipes are a delicious and hearty meal that is perfect for any occasion. This flavorful dish combines bone-in pork chops with a blend of apples, onions, and spices to create a savory and satisfying meal that will leave you feeling full and satisfied. Whether you are a seasoned home cook or just starting out, there are several valuable tips that you can use to make your apple and onion smothered pork chops with garam masala recipes even more delicious and flavorful.

Tip #1: Choose the Right Cut of Pork

When making apple and onion smothered pork chops with garam masala recipes, it is important to choose the right cut of pork. Bone-in pork chops work best for this dish, as the bone helps to provide extra flavor and helps the meat to cook more evenly. Look for pork chops that are about 1 inch thick, as this will help to ensure that they cook all the way through without becoming tough or dry.

Tip #2: Season the Pork Chops Properly

To ensure that your pork chops are flavorful and delicious, it is important to season them properly. A simple blend of salt, pepper, and garam masala can help to enhance the flavor of the pork and bring out its natural sweetness. Be sure to season the pork chops on both sides before cooking them in a hot skillet or on the grill.

Tip #3: Use Fresh Apples and Onions

When making apple and onion smothered pork chops with garam masala recipes, it is important to use fresh apples and onions. Fresh produce will provide a crisp, clean flavor that will enhance the overall dish. Choose apples that are firm and slightly tart, as this will help to balance the sweetness of the pork chops. For the onions, you can use any variety that you like, but yellow onions work particularly well in this recipe.

Tip #4: Cook the Apples and Onions Properly

To ensure that the apples and onions in your smothered pork chops are cooked properly, it is important to sauté them in a hot skillet until they are slightly softened and caramelized. This will help to bring out their natural sweetness and will help to balance the flavors in the dish. Be sure to sauté the apples and onions in a bit of butter or oil until they are translucent and slightly softened, but not mushy.

Tip #5: Incorporate Garam Masala Seasoning

Garam masala is a blend of spices commonly used in Indian cuisine that can add a unique and flavorful twist to your apple and onion smothered pork chops recipes. Made from a blend of warm spices, such as cumin, coriander, and cinnamon, garam masala can add a depth of flavor to your dish that is both bold and complex. Be sure to incorporate garam masala into your seasoning blend or sprinkle it over the top of your apple and onion mixture to give your pork chops an extra kick of flavor.

Tip #6: Cook the Pork Chops Properly

To ensure that your smothered pork chops are cooked properly, it is important to cook them to an internal temperature of 145°F. You can test the internal temperature using a meat thermometer inserted into the center of the thickest part of the pork chop. Be sure to let the pork chops rest for a few minutes after cooking to allow the juices to redistribute throughout the meat.

Tip #7: Serve with the Right Sides

To complete your apple and onion smothered pork chops with garam masala recipes, it is important to serve them with the right sides. Some popular options include roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or a side salad. Be sure to choose sides that complement the flavors of the dish and that will help to balance out the richness of the pork chops.

Conclusion

Utilizing these valuable tips can help you make a delicious and flavorful apple and onion smothered pork chops with garam masala recipes. Whether you are an experienced cook or just starting out, incorporating these tips can help to enhance the flavors of your dish and create a satisfying and hearty meal that is perfect for any occasion.
