Time 2h

Yield 24 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 sticks unsalted butter, softened, plus more for greasing glass
1 cup canola or vegetable oil
1 cup granulated sugar, plus more for dipping
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
4 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
Blue sanding sugar, for sprinkling (about 1/2 teaspoon per cookie)
Purple sanding sugar, for sprinkling (about 1/2 teaspoon per cookie)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, oil, granulated sugar, powdered sugar, vanilla and eggs. Add the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt and mix well. Cover and refrigerate the dough for 1 hour.
  • Using a cookie scoop, drop balls of dough onto ungreased, unlined baking sheets. Smear a dab of butter all over the bottom of a glass, then dip the glass in granulated sugar. Use the glass to flatten each ball of dough, dipping again into the sugar each time. Then sprinkle blue sanding sugar (about 1/2 teaspoon per cookie) over half of the cookies, and purple sanding sugar over the other half.
  • Bake until the cookies are just barely turning brown, 9 to 11 minutes. Don't overbrown! Allow to cool before eating. The cookies are ultra crumbly!

Time includes the 30 min. refrigerator time, also don't know how to put the servings correctly but it says it makes 6 doz. so I put 72 servings.

Angel cookies are a popular choice for holiday baking, but they can be enjoyed all year round. Whether you're baking them for a special occasion, or just to enjoy as a treat, angel cookies are sure to delight your taste buds.

The History of Angel Cookies

The true origins of angel cookies are not known, but it is believed that they were first created in the United States in the early 20th century. The recipe was likely inspired by meringues and other light, airy desserts, and it quickly became a favorite among bakers. The name "angel cookies" is thought to have been coined due to their light and delicate texture. The word "angel" is often used to describe things that are pure, perfect, and beautiful, and these cookies certainly fit that description.

How to Make Angel Cookies

Angel cookies are relatively simple to make, with just a few key ingredients. The recipe typically calls for egg whites, sugar, and cream of tartar, as well as any additional flavorings or toppings you might desire. To make angel cookies, you will need to start with room temperature egg whites. Beat them until they are stiff, then gradually add in the sugar and cream of tartar. You can also add in any additional flavorings or toppings at this point, such as vanilla extract, coconut, or chocolate chips. Once the mixture is fully combined, drop spoonfuls onto a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper. Bake the cookies at a low temperature for a long period of time, until they are crisp and golden.

Variations on the Classic Angel Cookie Recipe

While the classic angel cookie recipe is delicious on its own, there are plenty of ways to customize this recipe to suit your tastes. Here are a few variations to consider: Chocolate Angel Cookies: Add cocoa powder to the recipe to give the cookies a rich chocolate flavor. Lemon Angel Cookies: Add lemon zest and juice to the recipe for a bright, tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with the sweet cookie base. Coconut Angel Cookies: Add shredded coconut to the recipe for a tropical twist on this classic treat.

How to Store Angel Cookies

Angel cookies should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for several days, but are best enjoyed within the first day or two after baking. If you want to keep your cookies crisp for longer, you can store them in the freezer. Simply place them in a freezer-safe container or bag and they will keep for several months. When you're ready to eat them, just let them thaw at room temperature for a few minutes before enjoying.

Why You Should Try Angel Cookies

Angel cookies are a delicious and light alternative to heavier, denser desserts. They are perfect for when you want to satisfy your sweet tooth without feeling weighed down, and they are a great option for anyone who is watching their calorie intake. Plus, angel cookies are incredibly versatile. You can customize them with any flavorings or toppings you like, and they can be enjoyed on their own or paired with other desserts or snacks. Whether you're baking for a special occasion or just want to satisfy your sweet tooth, angel cookies are a treat that you won't want to miss.

Valuable Tips for Making Angel Cookies

If you're looking for a light and airy cookie, angel cookies are a great choice. These cookies are made with whipped egg whites, sugar, and flour, and they have a delicate, almost ethereal texture. To get the most out of your angel cookies, there are a few tips you should keep in mind.
1. Use room temperature ingredients
When baking with eggs or dairy, it's always a good idea to make sure your ingredients are at room temperature. This helps them blend together more easily and creates a smoother texture in your final product. For angel cookies, make sure your egg whites are at room temperature before you start whipping them. You can speed up the process by placing them in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes.
2. Whip the egg whites properly
The key to achieving the light, fluffy texture of angel cookies is whipping the egg whites properly. Start by ensuring that your mixing bowl and beaters are completely clean and dry. Any residual grease or water can prevent the egg whites from whipping properly. Then, add your egg whites to the bowl and begin beating them on low speed. Once they start to become foamy, gradually increase the speed to medium-high. Continue beating until stiff peaks form, which means the egg whites will hold their shape when the beaters are lifted.
3. Be gentle when folding in the flour mixture
After you've whipped the egg whites, you'll need to carefully fold in the flour mixture. Use a spatula to mix the ingredients together, using a gentle, scooping motion to avoid deflating the egg whites. Be sure to mix until the flour is just incorporated – over-mixing can result in tough, dense cookies.
4. Use a piping bag for uniform cookies
Angel cookies tend to be fairly flat and spread out when baked, so if you're looking for a more uniform shape, use a piping bag to form the cookies. This will allow you to create circles of dough that will hold their shape better during baking.
5. Line your baking sheets with parchment paper
To prevent your angel cookies from sticking to the baking sheet, be sure to line it with parchment paper. This will also make it easier to remove them from the sheet once they're done baking. If you don't have parchment paper, you can use a silicone baking mat or grease the sheet with butter or oil.
6. Bake at a low temperature
Angel cookies should be baked at a lower temperature than other cookies – around 300-325°F (150-165°C). This allows them to dry out and crisp up without browning too much. To prevent them from sticking together, space them out on the baking sheet, leaving about 1-2 inches between each cookie.
7. Let them cool completely before storing
Once your angel cookies are done baking, let them cool completely on the baking sheet before transferring them to a wire rack. This will prevent them from breaking apart as you remove them from the sheet. Once they're cool, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. They'll keep for several days, but be sure to check on them periodically to ensure they haven't become stale. By following these tips, you can make delicious and airy angel cookies that will be a hit with your friends and family. Whether you serve them with tea or coffee or top them with whipped cream and fruit, they're sure to be a sweet treat that everyone will love.
