PERFECTION SALAD

Perfection Salad image

A family recipe dating back to the early part of the 20th century, by my great-grandmother. I have a tendency to think of this as Grandpa's salad, because he always prepared it for us. My mom and sister still make it for our holiday family gatherings, although now we usually use sugarfree Jello. (I've recently discovered that Perfection Salad is not something unique to our family - there are a lot of old recipes on net for it. They're generally similar to the one below.)

Categories     Vegetable

Time 20m

Yield 6-8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup boiling water
1 (3 ounce) package lemon Jell-O gelatin
2 tablespoons vinegar or 2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup cold water
1 cup finely diced celery
1 cup finely shredded cabbage
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
2 tablespoons chopped pimiento
mayonnaise (Best Foods, Helmann's, or Vegenaise)

Steps:

  • Pour boiling water over jello in bowl.
  • Stir until jello is disolved.
  • Stir in vinegar, veggies, salt, and cold water.
  • Pour into mold, chill until firm.
  • Serve unmolded on chilled plate, topped with a generous dollop of mayonnaise (family tradition of the last 30 years or so demands that you use Best Foods mayo brand - *never* Miracle Whip).
  • If preferred, use 1/2 cup celery and 1 cup grated carrot.
  • You can use sugar-free jello for a diabetic/lowcarb version of Perfection Salad. Sometimes lemon jello is difficult to find - we've sometimes used lime instead.

Amish perfection salad recipes are a type of salad that originated from the Amish community. The recipe is known for its unique combination of flavors and textures that result in a perfectly balanced salad. The salad typically consists of a mixture of fruits, vegetables, and nuts, all combined with a creamy dressing. The Amish community has a reputation for being self-sufficient and producing excellent food, and their perfection salad recipe is no exception.

History of Amish Perfection Salad

The Amish community is known for its simple and traditional way of life, and their food reflects this approach as well. The Amish people are skilled at cooking and baking, and their recipes have been passed down from generation to generation. The history of Amish perfection salad goes back many years, and it is said to have originated in the early 1900s. During this time, gelatin was a popular ingredient used in salads, and the Amish community was no exception. They used gelatin to make a variety of sweet and savory salads, including the perfection salad. The first Amish perfection salad recipe was a combination of lime gelatin, cabbage, celery, peppers, and onions, all topped with a creamy mayonnaise dressing. Over time, the recipe evolved, and other fruits and vegetables were added to the mix. Some variations of the recipe use orange, lemon, or pineapple gelatin, while others use a combination of gelatin flavors. However, the basic components of the salad remain the same - a mixture of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and a creamy dressing.

2. Prepare the fruits and vegetables:

5. Chill the salad:

It is simple to make and can be served on various occasions. If you are planning to make Amish Perfection Salad, you need some recommended tips to make it perfectly. Here, we have gathered some valuable tips to help you make the perfect Amish Perfection Salad.

Tip 1: Pay Attention to the Ingredients

To make the perfect Amish Perfection Salad, you should use only the freshest ingredients. The salad traditionally includes shredded cabbage, carrots, and green peppers. Some variations also add celery or onions. You can use pre-shredded coleslaw mix, but shredding the cabbage yourself will ensure the freshness of the salad.
Shredding the cabbage:
To shred the cabbage, remove the outer leaves and cut the cabbage into quarters. Cut out the core, and then slice the cabbage as thinly as possible. If you don't have a sharp knife, you can use a food processor with a shredding attachment.
Choosing the right vegetables:
When choosing your vegetables, make sure that they are firm and free from blemishes. If you are using pre-shredded coleslaw mix, check the expiration date and ensure that it has not passed.

Tip 2: Mix the Dressing Just Right

The dressing for Amish Perfection Salad is made up of mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, and celery seed. To make the perfect dressing, you need to mix the ingredients in the right proportion.
Proportions:
Mix 1 cup of mayo, 1/3 cup of sugar, and 1/3 cup of vinegar together. Add a teaspoon of celery seed and mix well. Taste the dressing and adjust the seasoning as required.
Mixing:
Mix the dressing gently with the vegetables, making sure that everything is coated evenly. Add the dressing a little at a time until you have used it all. Do not over dress the salad, or it will become soggy.

Tip 3: Chill the Salad Before Serving

The Amish Perfection Salad should be chilled before serving. This allows the flavors to blend together and makes the salad taste even better.
Chilling time:
Chill the salad for at least an hour before serving. You can chill it for longer if you have the time. However, do not keep the salad in the refrigerator for more than a day or two.
Serving:
When serving the salad, you can garnish it with a sprinkle of chopped parsley, sliced cherry tomatoes or even diced boiled eggs. Serve the salad chilled.

Tip 4: Make Ahead of Time

You can make Amish Perfection Salad ahead of time, which is a great time saver if you're planning a party or family gathering.
Preparation:
Shred the vegetables and mix the dressing a day ahead of time. Keep them separate and refrigerate. When you're ready to serve, mix the dressing and vegetables together and chill as necessary.
Storing:
You can store Amish Perfection Salad in the refrigerator for up to two days. Make sure you keep it covered to prevent contamination.

Tip 5: Experiment with Variations

You can experiment with variations of the Amish Perfection Salad by adding different vegetables or using different dressings.
Vegetable variations:
You can add diced red bell peppers, onions or shredded carrots for additional color and flavor.
Dressing variations:
You can modify the dressing by adding mustard, sour cream or yogurt, depending on your taste preferences.

Conclusion

If you follow these tips, you can make the perfect Amish Perfection Salad for your family, friends or guests. Remember to use fresh ingredients, mix the dressing just right, chill the salad before serving, make it ahead of time, and experiment with variations.
