After traveling in eastern Ohio and eating many different "Amish-style" meatloaves, I finally asked for this wonderful meatloaf recipe. This one is not as sweet as the typical Amish recipe and has some garlic flavoring in it. We love it!!

AMISH MEATLOAF

I'm not sure what's supposed to be Amish about this recipe, but it is very good. Recipe from a freezer cooking email group. As a note - I generally do not use the bacon at all and I use a brown sugar/ketchup topping rather than the cheese. If you are doing this for the freezer, this can be frozen after assembly, then thawed and baked as directed. Or, cook completely, freeze, thaw and reheat. It's so fast to put together that I generally just make it and serve it the same day.

Meatloaf, a classic American dish, is one of the most loved and prepared dishes across the world. The dish is simple to make, versatile, and satisfying. One of the most famous variations of meatloaf recipes is the Amish meatloaf recipe. Amish meatloaf recipes are unique because they often contain simple, wholesome ingredients that create a comforting and delicious meal. In this article, we will discuss essential tips for making Amish meatloaf recipes.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Meat

Choosing the right meat is crucial when making Amish meatloaf recipes. You can opt for different types of meat, but high-fat content meat, such as ground beef, pork, or lamb, usually works best. However, ensure that the meat's fat content is not too high, or it may lead to a greasy taste and not hold its shape during baking. Thus, opt for something that is lean, but still with some fat content, such as 90/10 ground beef. Moreover, some Amish meatloaf recipes call for ground turkey, which is another excellent option if you are looking for a healthier and leaner meat option.

Tip 2: Use Fresh Ingredients

The key to making a fantastic dish is using fresh, high-quality ingredients. Therefore, it is best to use fresh ingredients when making Amish meatloaf. This means using freshly grated onions, minced garlic, and fresh herbs instead of dried ones. Fresh ingredients will enhance the dish's flavor and aroma and give the meatloaf that homemade taste that makes it so special.

Tip 3: Use a Binder

A binder is an ingredient that holds the ingredients together in a meatloaf. It is an essential component for ensuring that your meatloaf holds its shape and doesn't fall apart while baking. Common binders used in Amish meatloaf recipes include eggs, breadcrumbs, and oats. Ground pork rinds or almond flour can also serve as a low-carb binder. Eggs are often the most common binder in meatloaf recipes. They help the meatloaf hold together and have a fluffy texture.

Tip 4: Add Vegetables

Adding vegetables to your Amish meatloaf will give it an extra boost of nutrients and flavor. Vegetables such as grated carrots, chopped onions, and minced garlic can add a sweetness and depth of flavor to the dish. In addition, using vegetables such as grated zucchini or cauliflower rice can boost the nutritional content of the dish while still keeping it healthy.

Tip 5: Incorporate Cheese

Amish meatloaf recipes often call for the inclusion of cheese. Cheese adds an extra layer of flavor, texture, and creaminess to the dish. Depending on the recipe, different types of cheese can be used. Cheddar, Parmesan, and American cheese are popular choices that work well with Amish meatloaf. They add an extra layer of creaminess and richness, making the dish irresistible.

Tip 6: Spices and seasoning

Spices and seasoning are the most crucial element in an Amish meatloaf recipe. The right spices will elevate the dish's flavors and make it more enjoyable. Cumin, Cayenne pepper, and chili powder are some of the most popular spices used in meatloaf recipes. These spices will add depth and heat to the dish. Other common herbs and spices include parsley, thyme, and rosemary. They add a freshness and herby flavor that will make your meatloaf taste even better.

Tip 7: Use a Meatloaf Pan

Using a meatloaf pan is essential when making Amish meatloaf. A meatloaf pan will help your meatloaf cook evenly and hold its shape. A meatloaf pan is typically rectangular and has a perforated top that allows the fat to drain away during the cooking process. Not using a meatloaf pan may lead to greasy meatloaf or one that falls apart during baking.

Tip 8: Let the Meatloaf Rest

Once you have cooked the Amish meatloaf, let it rest outside for a few minutes before serving. This resting period enables the juices to settle back into the meatloaf, making it tender and juicy. Additionally, cutting into the meatloaf too soon may cause it to fall apart or become dry.

Conclusion

Amish meatloaf recipes are a classic American dish that is easy to make and offers a delicious and wholesome meal. Hopefully, these tips will help you create a perfect Amish meatloaf recipe that everyone in your family will love. Remember to choose the right meat, use fresh ingredients, add vegetables, cheese, seasoning, use a meatloaf pan, and let it rest. Enjoy!
