The Amish community has a reputation for creating delicious and hearty meals using simple ingredients. One of their signature dishes is the Amish baked creamed chicken recipe. This dish is made with chicken breasts, potatoes, and a creamy sauce that is thickened with flour. The dish is then baked in the oven until the chicken is tender and the sauce is bubbly and golden brown.

Ingredients

Chicken
The key ingredient in this dish is chicken breasts. The chicken is typically seasoned with salt and pepper before being baked. Other flavorful additions can include paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Potatoes
Potatoes are another key ingredient in this dish. They are sliced and layered on top of the chicken in the baking dish. This adds texture and a tasty contrast to the creamy sauce.
Flour and Milk
To make the creamy sauce, flour and milk are used. Flour is used as a thickener for the sauce and the milk adds richness and creaminess. Other variations of this dish also use heavy cream or sour cream.
Cheese
Some versions of this dish also include cheese. This can be in the form of shredded cheddar or parmesan cheese sprinkled on top of the dish before baking.

Preparation

Cook the Chicken
The chicken is typically seasoned with salt and pepper and then baked in the oven for about 20-25 minutes. It is then removed from the oven and placed in a baking dish.
Slice the Potatoes
Next, potatoes are washed, peeled, and sliced into thin rounds. The potatoes are then arranged on top of the chicken in the baking dish.
Make the Creamy Sauce
To make the cream sauce, flour is mixed with milk and then poured over the chicken and potatoes in the baking dish. The dish is then baked in the oven until the sauce is bubbly and golden brown.
Add Cheese (Optional)
If cheese is being used, it is typically sprinkled on top of the dish before baking. This adds a deliciously gooey and cheesy layer to the dish.

Serving Suggestions

Amish baked creamed chicken is typically served as a main dish for dinner. It can be served with a side of green beans, asparagus, or a mixed green salad. Some people also like to serve it with a side of crusty bread or biscuits to sop up the creamy sauce.

Amish baked creamed chicken is a comforting, hearty dish that is perfect for a family meal or potluck. It features tender chicken, a creamy sauce, and a crispy breadcrumb topping. Here are some valuable tips to ensure your Amish baked creamed chicken turns out delicious every time.

TIP 1: Use high-quality chicken

The success of your Amish baked creamed chicken recipe depends on the quality of the chicken you use. Look for chicken that is plump and has a vibrant pink color. Avoid chicken that is slimy or has a foul smell. Using high-quality chicken will ensure that your dish is flavorful and moist.

TIP 2: Season the chicken well

Seasoning the chicken well is key to making a flavorful Amish baked creamed chicken dish. Use a combination of spices such as paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to season your chicken. Make sure to rub the seasoning into the chicken well, so that every bite is full of flavor.

TIP 3: Use heavy cream for a rich sauce

To make a creamy sauce for your Amish baked creamed chicken, it is best to use heavy cream. This will give your sauce a rich, thick texture, and a decadent flavor. Avoid using light cream or half-and-half, as they may make your sauce too thin or less flavorful.

TIP 4: Add vegetables for extra flavor and nutrition

Adding vegetables such as onions, carrots, and celery to your Amish baked creamed chicken recipe can add extra flavor and nutrition to the dish. These vegetables can be chopped finely and added to the sauce or baked with the chicken for added texture and flavor.

TIP 5: Use homemade breadcrumbs for a crispy topping

A crispy breadcrumb topping is a signature element of Amish baked creamed chicken. To make the best topping, use homemade breadcrumbs made from fresh bread. Simply pulse bread slices in a food processor until they are crumbly, then mix with melted butter and seasonings. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the chicken and bake until golden brown and crispy.

TIP 6: Watch the baking time closely

The baking time for Amish baked creamed chicken can vary based on the thickness of the chicken and the oven temperature. It is important to watch the dish closely and check the internal temperature of the chicken with a meat thermometer to ensure it is fully cooked. Overcooked chicken can be dry and tough, while undercooked chicken can be unsafe to eat.

TIP 7: Let the dish rest before serving

After baking, it is important to let your Amish baked creamed chicken rest for a few minutes before serving. This will allow the sauce to thicken and the chicken to cool slightly, making it easier to handle and improving the overall flavor and texture of the dish.

TIP 8: Serve with homemade sides

Amish baked creamed chicken is a filling and comforting dish that pairs well with a variety of homemade sides. Consider serving it with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad. Homemade sides can add extra nutrition and a variety of flavors and textures to the meal.

TIP 9: Store leftovers properly

If you have leftovers of your Amish baked creamed chicken dish, it is important to store them properly to ensure their safety and quality. Place the leftovers in an airtight container and refrigerate them promptly. Leftovers can be reheated in the microwave or oven for a quick and easy meal.
In conclusion,
Making Amish baked creamed chicken requires attention to detail and the use of quality ingredients. Follow these tips for a delicious and comforting dish that is sure to be a hit with your family and friends. With the right approach, you can create a flavorful and satisfying meal that will become a regular part of your recipe rotation.
