OVEN-FRIED CHICKEN

Oven-Fried Chicken image

You'll swear this chicken, lower in fat and calories but still crunchy and delicious, was made in the frying pan. Using skinless chicken lowers the fat content by almost half and the calories by about a third. Whole-wheat breading adds a little fiber to an already-healthier oven-fried chicken.

Oven-fried chicken is an all-time comfort food that's traditionally made by coating chicken with seasoned flour, coating it with egg wash, then dredging it in seasoned breadcrumbs before frying in oil. The end result is a crispy, flavorful chicken that's savory, juicy and delectable. However, frying chicken can be a messy and time-consuming affair, not to mention it's high in calories and not so healthy. But what if you could achieve the same level of deliciousness with less fat and fuss? That's where oven fried chicken comes in; it's a healthier and less messier option that requires less effort yet yields a crunchy, delicious fried chicken. Here are some valuable tips to help you make amazing taste oven fried chicken recipes.

Tips for Preparing Chicken

Tip 1: Choose the Right Cut of Chicken
The cut of chicken you use can make a big difference in the outcome of your oven-fried chicken. Chicken wings or drumsticks are perfect for this recipe since they have sufficient meat and skin to stay moist and juicy while still being crispy. However, you can use any cut of chicken you prefer, whether it's bone-in or boneless, breasts or thighs.
Tip 2: Brine Your Chicken Before Baking
Brining your chicken beforehand is optional, but it's recommended to ensure that your chicken stays moist and flavorful. Brining involves immersing your chicken in a seasoned saltwater solution for a few hours or overnight, which helps to keep the chicken juicy and tender while also infusing it with additional flavor.
Tip 3: Pat the Chicken Dry Before Coating
It's important to pat your chicken dry with paper towels before coating it with flour or breadcrumbs. This helps to remove any excess moisture that can prevent the coating from sticking to the chicken or make it turn soggy instead of crispy.

Tips for Coating the Chicken

Tip 1: Use the Right Coating Ingredients
The success of your oven-fried chicken depends on the coating that you use. Instead of using regular flour, try using a mixture of flour and cornmeal or panko breadcrumbs. These types of coating options produce a crunchier and crispier texture. You can also add spices, such as cumin, paprika, or garlic powder, to heighten the flavor.
Tip 2: Use Egg Wash to Help Coating Stick to Chicken
To ensure that the coating sticks to the chicken, you will need to use egg wash to help it adhere. Dip the chicken in beaten eggs mixed with a little milk, then coat it with the flour mixture.
Tip 3: Let the Coated Chicken Rest Before Baking
After you coat the chicken with the flour mixture, let it rest on a wire rack for 15-20 minutes to allow the coating to adhere better to the chicken. This also helps to prevent the coating from falling off during the baking process.

Tips for Baking the Chicken

Tip 1: Use a Dark or Non-Stick Baking Pan
Using a dark or non-stick baking sheet or pan can help to prevent the chicken from sticking and ensure even browning. If you don't have a dark or non-stick pan, you can line your pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
Tip 2: Preheat Your Oven
It's essential to preheat your oven before baking the chicken to promote even cooking and ensure that the chicken turns out crispy on the outside while still being juicy on the inside.
Tip 3: Flip the Chicken Halfway through Cooking
Flip the chicken halfway through the cooking process to ensure that it cooks evenly on both sides. This also helps to crisp up the coating on both sides.
Tip 4: Use a Meat Thermometer to Check for Doneness
The best way to check if your oven-fried chicken is done is to use a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer in the thickest part of the chicken, and it should read 165°F when the chicken is fully cooked. This ensures that the chicken is not overcooked, which can make it dry and tough.

Tips for Serving the Chicken

Tip 1: Let the Chicken Rest Before Serving
It's essential to let the chicken rest for a few minutes once it's out of the oven to allow the juices to redistribute in the meat. This ensures that the chicken is tender and moist when you serve it.
Tip 2: Serve with Dipping Sauce
Oven-fried chicken is best served with dipping sauce, such as honey mustard or ranch. You can also serve it with a side dish, such as sweet potato fries, coleslaw, or greens.
Tip 3: Store Leftovers Properly
If you have leftover oven-fried chicken, allow it to cool down before placing it in an airtight container and storing it in the refrigerator. Reheating the chicken in the oven or toaster oven provides the best results, but you can also microwave it for a quick snack.

Conclusion

Oven-fried chicken is a healthier and simpler alternative to traditional fried chicken. The key to making amazing oven-fried chicken is to choose the right cut of chicken, brine it beforehand, pat it dry, use the right coating ingredients, let it rest before baking, use a meat thermometre for doneness, and serve it with dipping sauce. By following these valuable tips, you can create a delicious, crispy chicken dish that will impress your family and friends.
