This is a very yummy, sweet party mix that gets a lot of requests. I usually make two batches during the Christmas season and one during Easter and sometimes throughout the year "just for the fun of it." If it has been a while since I have taken some to work, they start reminding me it is time to make another batch. It is very addicting. This makes a huge batch. You can cut it in half, but why? I have a large (28 quart) storage container that I make it in and store it in. You can use different colored M&M's for the different seasons, or use team colors for a football party or tailgate snack.

Steps:
- Mix the cereals, peanuts, pretzels and M&M's together in a very large container.
- Melt the almond bark. I do this by placing it all in a large bowl and microwaving on high for 2-3 minutes, stirring and repeating until it is melted.
- Pour over the cereal mixture and mix well.
- Lay out on a table or a long counter and break apart. Allow to dry, breaking apart as needed.
- Store tightly covered.

I don't know why, exactly, when I first receievd this recipe it was called "white-trash" and it certainly isn't an insult. It's simply a really easy way to put dinner on the table, using a crockpot. As a former chemistry student, I know that the acid in the Cola tenderizes the meat, and the caramel coloring in the soda makes your gravy brown. Delicious!

Steps:
- Heat oven to 250 degrees F.
- Soak beans in a plastic container overnight in just enough cold water to submerge them completely.
- Place a cast iron Dutch oven over medium heat and stir in the bacon, onion, and jalapenos until enough fat has rendered from the bacon to soften the onions, about 5 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste, dark brown sugar, and molasses.
- Drain the beans and reserve the soaking liquid. Add the drained beans to the Dutch oven. Place the soaking liquid in a measuring cup and add enough vegetable broth to equal 4 cups of liquid. Add the liquid to the Dutch oven and bring to a boil over high heat. Add in cayenne, black pepper and salt. Give them a stir and cover with the lid. Place the Dutch oven in the oven for 6 to 8 hours, or until the beans are tender.

Alton Brown is a celebrity chef and television personality known for his creative and innovative approach to cooking. He is famous for his unique cooking techniques and recipes, but one collection of recipes that has caught the attention of many is his "Alton Brown's White Trash Recipes."
What are "White Trash Recipes?"
The term "white trash" is often used as a derogatory term to describe people who come from a low socioeconomic background. However, when it comes to cooking, it has come to represent a particular genre of food that is cheap, easy, and often considered "junk food."
White trash recipes are usually prepared with processed foods, canned goods, and other cheap and readily available ingredients. They are often high in calories, unhealthy, and lacking in nutrients. However, despite their reputation, white trash recipes can be surprisingly delicious and satisfying.
What makes Alton Brown's White Trash Recipes different?
Unlike traditional white trash recipes, Alton Brown's take on these recipes is focused on elevating their taste and quality. He uses his culinary expertise to create recipes that are not only easy and affordable but also flavorful and healthy.
One of the ways he achieves this is by using fresh ingredients and homemade sauces and dressings. For example, in his recipe for "White Trash Gazpacho," he uses fresh tomatoes, cucumber, and peppers to make a fresh and healthy soup.
Another way he upgrades traditional white trash recipes is by adding surprising and unexpected ingredients. For example, in his recipe for "White Trash Tiramisu," he uses store-bought cream-filled cakes instead of ladyfingers, and he adds cocoa powder and Kahlua to the whipped cream for an elevated flavor.
Alton Brown's Most Popular White Trash Recipes
1. White Trash Cassoulet: This recipe is a take on the classic French dish that usually calls for expensive ingredients like duck confit and white beans. Alton Brown's version uses canned pork and beans, hot dogs, and barbecue sauce for a flavorful and affordable dish.
2. White Trash Dip: This recipe is a crowd-pleaser and perfect for any party or gathering. It is made with cream cheese, canned chili, and shredded cheese and then baked until bubbly and delicious.
3. White Trash Sushi: This recipe is a fun and creative take on traditional sushi. Instead of using raw fish and expensive ingredients, Alton Brown uses canned tuna, white bread, and a creamy dressing.
4. White Trash Tuna Melt Pie: This recipe is an upgrade on the classic tuna melt sandwich. Alton Brown uses a pre-made pie crust, canned tuna, and American cheese for a delicious and easy-to-make dish.
The Controversy Surrounding the Name
It is worth noting that the name "White Trash Recipes" has received criticism for being derogatory and insensitive. Some argue that it perpetuates negative stereotypes of low-income people and is offensive to those who come from such backgrounds.
However, Alton Brown has defended the name of his recipe collection. He says that it is meant to be a fun and tongue-in-cheek way of celebrating the creativity and ingenuity of low-income people when it comes to cooking. He acknowledges that the name may be offensive to some, but he stands by his decision to use it.
Conclusion
Alton Brown's White Trash Recipes are a unique and creative take on traditional "junk food" dishes. While they may not be the healthiest or most nutritious, they are affordable, easy to make, and surprisingly delicious. And while the name may be controversial, it is a testament to the ingenuity of people who have learned to make the most out of what they have.
There's no denying that Alton Brown is a master of the kitchen. From his informative shows like "Good Eats" to his cookbooks and recipes, he has influenced countless home cooks across the world. One of his most popular recipes is his "white trash" recipe, which combines Chex cereal, pretzels, and other snacks with a seasoned coating to create a deliciously addictive snack mix. But before you dive headfirst into making this recipe, there are a few tips you should keep in mind to ensure that your results are just as tasty as Alton's.
Tip #1: Choose Your Base Ingredients Carefully
One of the keys to making a great snack mix is choosing the right base ingredients. In Alton's recipe, the base consists of Chex cereal, pretzels, and salted peanuts. But if you're not a fan of any of these ingredients, feel free to swap them out for something else. Some other great options include:
- Goldfish crackers
- Cheez-Its
- Corn chips
- Oyster crackers
- Rice crackers
- Pita chips
The key is to choose ingredients that are crunchy, salty, and can hold up to the seasoned coating without getting too soggy.
Tip #2: Use High-Quality Spices and Seasonings
The seasoned coating that goes on top of the base ingredients is what gives this snack mix its signature flavor. But if you use low-quality spices, you may end up with a lackluster result. Make sure to use fresh, high-quality spices, and pay attention to the amounts called for in the recipe. Alton's recipe calls for a mix of garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt. You can adjust the amounts of each spice to suit your taste preferences, but be careful not to go overboard with the cayenne if you're sensitive to spice.
Tip #3: Don't Skimp on the Butter
The seasoned coating for Alton's recipe is made from melted butter and Worcestershire sauce. While it may be tempting to lighten up the recipe by using less butter, don't do it! The butter is what helps the spices adhere to the base ingredients and gives the mix its addictive crunch. If you use too little butter, you'll end up with a dry, unappetizing snack mix. So embrace the butter, but don't go overboard either - the recipe calls for 1/2 cup, which is plenty.
Tip #4: Spread the Mix Out Evenly on the Baking Sheets
Once you've mixed the base ingredients with the seasoned coating, it's time to spread everything out evenly on a baking sheet. Make sure to use a rimmed baking sheet, as the mix will cook more evenly and won't spill over the sides. Spread the mix out as evenly as possible, making sure that there aren't any clumps of pretzels or cereal that are sticking together. If necessary, use a spatula to gently separate any clumps.
Tip #5: Stir the Mix Frequently While Baking
The key to getting an evenly coated, perfectly crunchy snack mix is to stir it frequently while it bakes. Alton's recipe calls for baking the mix at 250 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes. This may seem like a hassle, but it's important to keep the mix moving so that it cooks evenly and doesn't burn. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to stir the mix gently, making sure to get the pieces from the bottom of the pan as well as the top.
Tip #6: Let the Mix Cool Completely Before Storing
Once the snack mix is fully baked, it can be tempting to dive right in and start snacking. But resist the urge and let the mix cool completely before storing it in an airtight container. This will help to ensure that the mix stays crunchy and doesn't get stale. If you're making a large batch, consider dividing it into smaller portions and storing them in separate containers, so that the mix doesn't get crushed.
Tip #7: Experiment with Different Flavors
Alton's recipe for white trash snack mix is delicious as-is, but that doesn't mean you can't experiment with different flavors. Try adding some different spices to the seasoned coating, or swapping out some of the base ingredients for something else. You could try using different types of nuts, or even adding some dried fruit for a sweet twist. Play around with the recipe until you find a combination that you love.
In conclusion, Alton Brown's white trash recipe is a favorite among snack mix enthusiasts for good reason. It's crunchy, salty, and totally addictive. But with a few tips and tricks, you can take this recipe to the next level and create a snack mix that's truly unforgettable. Remember to choose your ingredients carefully, use high-quality spices, embrace the butter, spread the mix out evenly, stir frequently while baking, let the mix cool completely before storing, and experiment with different flavors. With these tips in mind, you'll be on your way to snack mix nirvana!
