Cooking with crock pots has become very popular in recent years because it is convenient and easy. The crock pot saves you time and effort because once you put the ingredients in, you can walk away and get on with your day while the food simmers away. One of the dishes that can be made in the crock pot is alpine chicken. This dish is hearty and flavorful, and it is perfect for cold winter nights. In this article, we will look at valuable tips to help you make the best alpine chicken in the crock pot.

Tip 1: Choose the Right Chicken Cuts

The first step in making alpine chicken in the crock pot is choosing the right chicken cuts. You can use either boneless chicken thighs or breasts. Boneless chicken thighs are typically fattier and have more flavor, while breasts are leaner and have a milder taste. You can use either one, depending on your preference. However, if you choose boneless chicken breasts, be careful not to overcook them because they can become dry and tough.

Tip 2: Prepare the Chicken

Before putting the chicken in the crock pot, it is important to prepare it properly. Trim any excess fat, and season the chicken with salt and pepper. You can also add other seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, or Italian seasoning. To give the chicken more flavor, you can also marinate it overnight in a mixture of olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, and dried herbs.

Tip 3: Choose the Right Vegetables

Alpine chicken is traditionally made with onions, mushrooms, and potatoes. However, you can also add other vegetables like carrots, celery, bell peppers, or zucchini. Choose vegetables that are firm and won't turn mushy when cooked in the crock pot. Cut the vegetables into bite-sized pieces, so they cook evenly with the chicken.

Tip 4: Add Liquid

The crock pot needs liquid to create steam and cook the food properly. For alpine chicken, you can use chicken broth, white wine, or a combination of both. The liquid should cover the chicken and vegetables, but not completely submerge them. You can also add a can of cream of mushroom soup for a creamier texture and extra flavor.

Tip 5: Cook Time and Temperature

Cooking times vary depending on the size and type of chicken cuts, as well as the thickness of the vegetables. Boneless chicken thighs usually take 4-6 hours on high or 6-8 hours on low heat. Boneless chicken breasts need less time, about 3-4 hours on high or 5-6 hours on low heat. Vegetables usually take longer to cook than chicken, so add them to the crock pot first and place the chicken on top. Cook the chicken on high for faster cooking, or low for a slower and more tender result.

Tip 6: Thicken the Sauce

Alpine chicken is served with a thick and creamy sauce. To thicken the sauce, you can remove the chicken and vegetables from the crock pot and set them aside. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch with a little bit of cold water to make a slurry. Add the slurry to the hot liquid in the crock pot and stir well. Turn the heat to high and cook for another 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens. Return the chicken and vegetables to the crock pot and mix well.

Tip 7: Garnish and Serve

Alpine chicken is a rustic and hearty dish that is perfect for colder months. You can garnish it with chopped fresh parsley or thyme leaves, and serve it with crusty bread or mashed potatoes. The creamy sauce and tender chicken will make this dish a crowd-pleaser.
Conclusion
Making alpine chicken in the crock pot is a great way to enjoy a flavorful and comforting meal with minimal effort. By following these valuable tips, you can ensure that your alpine chicken turns out perfectly every time. Remember to choose the right chicken cuts, prepare the chicken properly, choose the right vegetables, add liquid, cook on the right temperature, thicken the sauce, and garnish and serve with crusty bread or mashed potatoes. Enjoy!
