These savory-sweet shrimp skewers are easy to make and cook in just a few minutes. They are perfect for summer weeknights or weekend dinner parties. Prep the sauce ahead of time for an even faster dinner. I prefer to use jumbo shrimp (21-25 per pound), however use what you have on hand.

SHRIMP TERIYAKI KABOBS

Shrimp Teriyaki Kabobs image

You can add bell pepper or onion to these kabobs. I served them at a party so I used the 21-25 count shrimp and they were devoured. Can be an appetizer or a main dish, depending on your presentation.

Time 23m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 lb large shrimp, shelled and deveined (I used 21-25 per pound)
1/3 cup teriyaki marinade (homemade or bottled)
1 green onion, finely chopped
1 -2 garlic clove, finely minced
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks (I used the chunks in pineapple juice, not heavy syrup)

Steps:

  • In a large zip-lock bag combine teriyaki sauce, onion, garlic, sugar, zest and a splash of pineapple juice from the chunks.
  • Add shrimp and toss to coat.
  • I let them set in the fridge all day till I was ready to skewer them to grill.
  • Be sure and soak your skewers if you are using wood!
  • Place a pineapple chuck in the curve of each shrimp and place on a skewer, going through the "head" of the shrimp, the pineapple and then the "tail".
  • I was able to get about 4 on each skewer.
  • Grill about 2-3 minutes on each side or until shrimp is pink.
  • You can baste with the marinade if you want but I did not.
  • You can also broil this if you don't have a grill.
  • I removed from the skewers for my guests but would probably serve on skewers if I had fancy ones.

This dish combines the sweet flavors of pineapple and teriyaki with the savory taste of grilled shrimp, creating a delicious and easy meal that is perfect for a backyard barbecue or a weeknight dinner. In this article, we will provide valuable tips for making the perfect aloha teriyaki shrimp skewers that are sure to impress.

Tip 1: Choose high-quality shrimp

The key to making delicious shrimp skewers is to start with high-quality shrimp. When selecting shrimp, look for those that are firm, plump, and translucent. Avoid shrimp that appear slimy or have a strong fishy smell, as this can indicate that they are not fresh. It is also important to choose sustainably sourced shrimp, as this will ensure that you are not contributing to overfishing or harmful fishing practices.

Tip 2: Prepare the shrimp correctly

Before you start skewering the shrimp, it is important to prepare them correctly. Begin by removing the shell and deveining the shrimp if it has not already been done. Next, rinse the shrimp under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. This will help to remove any residual sand or grit and ensure that the shrimp are clean and ready to be marinated.

Tip 3: Marinate the shrimp

Marinating the shrimp is an essential step in making delicious aloha teriyaki shrimp skewers. To make the marinade, combine soy sauce, pineapple juice, brown sugar, garlic, and ginger in a bowl. Add the shrimp to the marinade and ensure that they are fully coated. Cover the bowl and let the shrimp marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, but no longer than two hours. This will allow the shrimp to absorb the flavor of the marinade and become more flavorful.

Tip 4: Choose the right vegetables

While shrimp is the star of the dish, it is important to choose the right vegetables to complement it. Bell peppers, onions, and pineapple are excellent options for skewers. These vegetables add color, texture, and flavor to the dish, and their sweetness pairs well with the teriyaki marinade. Cut the vegetables into bite-size pieces that are roughly the same size as the shrimp to ensure even cooking.

Tip 5: Soak the skewers

To prevent the skewers from burning on the grill, it is important to soak them in water for at least 30 minutes before use. This will prevent the skewers from catching fire and ensure that they are sturdy enough to hold the shrimp and vegetables.

Tip 6: Assemble the skewers

Assembling the skewers is a fun and creative process that allows you to customize the dish to your liking. Begin by threading a piece of vegetable onto the skewer, followed by a piece of shrimp. Continue alternating between vegetables and shrimp until the skewer is full. Be sure to leave a small amount of space between each ingredient to ensure even cooking.

Tip 7: Grill the skewers

Grilling the skewers is the final step in making delicious aloha teriyaki shrimp skewers. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat and lightly oil the grates. Place the skewers on the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the shrimp is pink and opaque and the vegetables are tender. Be sure to rotate the skewers regularly to ensure even cooking and prevent burning.

Tip 8: Serve with rice and garnishes

Once the skewers are cooked, remove them from the grill and allow them to rest for a few minutes. Serve the skewers with rice and garnishes such as chopped green onions or sesame seeds. This will add an additional layer of flavor and texture to the dish.
In conclusion
Making delicious aloha teriyaki shrimp skewers is easy when you follow these valuable tips. Start with high-quality shrimp, marinate them in a flavorful teriyaki sauce, choose the right vegetables, soak the skewers, assemble them creatively, and grill them to perfection. By following these tips, you can create a delicious and impressive dish that is sure to become a summer favorite.
