COPYCAT KFC CHICKEN SEASONING

Copycat Kfc Chicken Seasoning image

There was a book of KFC recipes in my e-cookbook collection. Most of them called for ingredients I don't use and being a vegetarian I don't eat chicken. But this seasoning looks good; it originally called for adding 1/8 tsp MSG but I opted not to include it. This would probably work nice for tofu chunks and veggies like greenbeans and asparagus for us vegetarians and vegans, the omnivorous types would probably like to make some health-ified chicken with this. This yields about 4 teaspoons, a small spice-rack sized bottle.

There is no denying that KFC’s spice mix for chicken is one of the most popular and well-known flavors around. But what do you do when you want that flavor at home? There are many copycat recipes out there claiming to have the “secret” blend of spices, but not all of them come close to the real thing. Here are some valuable tips to help you create an “almost KFC” spice mix for your chicken.

Tip 1: Get the right spices

The first and most important tip for creating a good KFC-style spice mix is getting the right blend of spices. Many copycat recipes use common spices like cumin, paprika, and onion powder, but the secret blend of KFC spices is more complex. Some of the key ingredients in the KFC spice mix are black pepper, white pepper, garlic powder, and celery seed. You may also want to add a little bit of cayenne pepper for some extra heat.

Tip 2: Use freshly ground spices

If you want your KFC-style spice mix to have the best flavor, you should use freshly ground spices. Many store-bought spices can be stale and lose their flavor over time. To get the most flavor out of your spices, try grinding them yourself using a spice grinder or mortar and pestle. This will release the oils and flavors in the spices, giving your spice mix a more robust and complex taste.

Tip 3: Experiment with the amount of salt

Salt is an essential ingredient in any spice mix, but getting the right balance can be tricky. The KFC spice mix has a slightly salty taste, but it shouldn’t be overwhelming. It’s a good idea to start with a small amount of salt and gradually add more until you get the right balance. Remember that you can always add more salt, but you can’t take it away.

Tip 4: Use a mix of sweeteners

Many KFC-style spice mix recipes call for brown sugar as the only sweetener. However, to get a more complex flavor, it’s a good idea to use a mix of sweeteners. Try adding a little bit of honey or maple syrup to your spice mix. This will give your chicken a sweet and savory flavor that’s similar to the KFC original.

Tip 5: Marinate your chicken in the spice mix

If you want your chicken to have a really good flavor, it’s a good idea to marinate it in the spice mix for at least a few hours. This will allow the spices to penetrate the meat and give it a more intense flavor. You can also add a little bit of buttermilk to the marinade, which will help the spices adhere to the chicken better and provide a tangy flavor.

Tip 6: Use a blend of flours for the coating

The KFC original recipe calls for a blend of different flours and spices to create the crispy coating. Using a blend of flours will give your chicken a crispy, flavorful coating that’s similar to KFC’s. Some good flours to use include all-purpose flour, corn flour, and rice flour. You can also add a little bit of baking powder to the flour mixture, which will help the coating puff up and become even crispier.

Tip 7: Use a deep fryer

To get the perfect texture on your KFC-style chicken, you’ll want to use a deep fryer. This will allow the chicken to cook evenly and give it a crispy outside and juicy inside. If you don’t have a deep fryer, you can use a heavy-bottomed pot or a cast-iron skillet. However, you’ll need to be more careful with the temperature and be sure to monitor the chicken closely as it cooks.

Tip 8: Drain the chicken properly

After frying, it’s important to drain your chicken properly to remove excess oil. You can do this by placing the chicken on a wire rack or a bed of paper towels. The key is to remove as much oil as possible without removing the crispy coating. Be gentle when handling the chicken, and don’t overcrowd the rack or paper towels, as this can cause the chicken to become soggy.

Conclusion

Making an “almost KFC” spice mix for chicken at home can be a fun and rewarding experience. By using the right spices, experimenting with sweeteners, and marinating your chicken, you can create a flavorful and crispy chicken that’s similar to KFC’s. Using a deep fryer and draining the chicken properly will ensure that you get the perfect crispy texture. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating a delicious chicken that’s sure to impress your friends and family.
