TASTY & HEALTHY APPLESAUCE BREAD

Tasty & Healthy Applesauce Bread image

This is really good, and you'll be amazed at how low in fat and sugar it is! The recipe started as one from Sunset's Light and Healthy cookbook (1990), but I've tweaked it over the years, and I think I could get away with even less sugar. It's moist enough you don't need to spread it with anything -- just slice and enjoy. If you substitute craisins (sweeted dried cranberries), it works nicely for a holiday brunch or snack. Hope you like it.

However, making it can be tricky, especially if you are a beginner. In this article, we will share some valuable tips that will help you make the perfect Allegheny applesauce bread recipe.

Tip #1: Use the Right Ingredients

The first and foremost tip to make the perfect Allegheny applesauce bread is to use the right ingredients. You will require flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, applesauce, eggs, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Make sure that you use fresh and high-quality ingredients for the best results.
Flour
Use all-purpose flour as it has the perfect gluten content for baking bread. You can add a little wheat flour to make the bread healthier.
Sugar
Use granulated sugar as it dissolves well and adds sweetness evenly throughout the bread.
Baking Powder and Salt
Make sure your baking powder and salt are fresh to ensure that your bread rises perfectly and tastes delicious.
Cinnamon and Nutmeg
The perfect combination of cinnamon and nutmeg adds the perfect amount of warmth and flavor to your bread.
Applesauce
Use unsweetened applesauce as it will add the perfect sweetness to your bread.
Eggs
Use large eggs as they have the perfect protein content to help the bread rise.
Vegetable Oil
Use vegetable oil as it has a neutral taste and doesn't overpower the flavor of the bread.
Vanilla Extract
Pure vanilla extract adds a subtle yet delicious flavor to your bread.

Tip #2: Measure the Ingredients Correctly

Measuring the ingredients is key to making any recipe, and the same applies to Allegheny applesauce bread. Use measuring cups and spoons to measure the ingredients to the exact quantity mentioned in the recipe. Mismeasuring can lead to uneven baking and a less than perfect bread.

Tip #3: Mix the Dry and Wet Ingredients Separately

Mixing the dry and wet ingredients separately will ensure that every ingredient is evenly distributed throughout the bread. Mix the dry ingredients in one bowl and the wet ingredients in another. Then, gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, while stirring continuously. Continue stirring until the mixture is smooth and well-combined.

Tip #4: Use a Loaf Pan

Allegheny applesauce bread can be baked in various shapes and sizes, but using a loaf pan will give you the perfect sized slices. Make sure that the loaf pan is greased and floured to prevent the bread from sticking to the sides.

Tip #5: Preheat the Oven

Preheating the oven is crucial to ensure that your Allegheny applesauce bread bakes evenly. Preheat your oven to 350°F/180°C and let it heat up for at least 10 minutes before adding the bread.

Tip #6: Bake the Bread for the Right Amount of Time

Baking time for Allegheny applesauce bread may vary depending on the size of the loaf pan you use. However, it generally takes around 55-60 minutes to bake the bread completely. Check the bread's progress by inserting a toothpick in the center of the bread. If it comes out clean, the bread is done.

Tip #7: Let the Bread Cool before Serving

After taking out the bread from the oven, let it cool in the loaf pan for at least ten minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. This will prevent the bread from breaking, and you can slice it easily.

Tip #8: Store the Bread Correctly

You can store your Allegheny applesauce bread by wrapping it tightly in plastic wrap or storing it in an airtight container. Store it at room temperature for up to five days. If you want to freeze it, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and store it in the freezer. It will stay fresh for up to three months.
