Yield 4 burgers

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon ground coriander
3 medium red onions, finely diced (3 cups)
2 cups dry red wine
1 cup sugar
2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest
3/4 teaspoon ground juniper berries
1 teaspoon chopped thyme
1 cup fresh orange juice
2 pounds ground chuck
Salt and freshly ground pepper
4 kaiser or brioche rolls, split and toasted
Gorgonzola cheese, sliced (optional)
Arugula leaves (optional)

Steps:

  • MAKE THE RED ONION COMPOTE: In a medium saucepan, heat the vegetable oil. Add the coriander and cook over moderate heat for 30 seconds. Add the red onions, wine, sugar, bay leaves, orange zest, juniper berries, thyme and orange juice and bring to a boil. Simmer over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and is reduced to 2 cups, about 1 hour. Let the compote cool to room temperature. Discard the bay leaves and season with salt. MAKE THE BURGERS: Heat a large cast-iron skillet. Gently form the ground chuck into four 4-inch patties about 1 1/2 inches thick. Make a 1/2-inch indention in the center of each patty and season generously with salt and pepper. When the skillet is hot, add the patties and cook over moderately high heat until browned, 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare. Top with slices of gorgonzola, if desired. Transfer them to a large plate and let rest for 5 minutes. Place the hamburgers on the toasted brioche buns, top with the compote, garnish with arugula and serve.

All-American Hamburger Recipes: The Ultimate Guide

When it comes to classic American cuisine, nothing quite hits the spot like a juicy hamburger. From fast food chains to gourmet restaurants, the burger is America's go-to comfort food. But what makes a great burger? It's all in the meat, toppings, and bun. In this guide, we'll explore the essential elements that make up the most delicious all-American hamburger recipes.
The Meat
The key to a tasty burger is the meat. While some may opt for a veggie burger or turkey patty, the classic all-American burger is made up of ground beef. There are various types of beef to choose from – sirloin, chuck, or even brisket, but the best beef for burgers is ground chuck. The higher fat content in ground chuck gives the burger a juicy flavor, and it's the perfect meat for grilling. When selecting the meat, make sure to choose a cut with at least 20% fat. The fat will add flavor, and it'll prevent the burger from drying out on the grill. To make your burger even more flavorful, try adding herbs and spices to the meat mixture. Garlic, onion, paprika, and cumin are popular choices.
The Toppings
While the meat is the star of the burger, the toppings are what make it truly unforgettable. The beauty of burgers is that you can customize them to suit your taste. From classic sliced cheese to bacon, lettuce, and tomato, the possibilities are endless. One of the most iconic toppings for an all-American burger is American cheese. This mild, melty cheese is perfect for burgers because it doesn't overpower the flavor of the meat. Other great cheese options include cheddar, pepper jack, and Swiss. When it comes to toppings, there are no rules. You can add anything from sautéed onions and mushrooms to avocado and jalapeños. For a gourmet twist, try adding roasted red peppers or caramelized onions. Don't forget the condiments – ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise are classic burger toppings that will never go out of style.
The Bun
The bun is often overlooked when it comes to burgers, but it's an essential element. The perfect bun should be slightly sweet and sturdy enough to hold up to the meat and toppings. Brioche buns are a popular choice because they're buttery and soft, but a classic sesame seed bun is just as good. To enhance the flavor of the bun, try toasting it on the grill. This will give it a slightly charred flavor and make it more sturdy. If you're feeling adventurous, try swapping out the bun altogether. Grilled portobello mushrooms or lettuce wraps make great low-carb alternatives.
The Cooking Method
While some may prefer to cook their burgers in a skillet or oven, the ultimate all-American burger is grilled. Grilling gives the meat a smoky flavor and creates those iconic grill marks. To ensure your burger comes off the grill perfectly cooked, follow these tips: - Preheat the grill to high heat - Form the patties into a uniform thickness (about ¾ inch) - Season the patties with salt and pepper just before grilling - Cook the patties on high heat for about 4-5 minutes per side - Use a meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature reaches 160°F for a safe-to-eat burger
The Perfect Pairing
What's a burger without a cold beer to wash it down? Whether you prefer a light pilsner or hoppy IPA, beer is the ultimate pairing for a burger. If beer isn't your thing, a classic soda or milkshake is just as good.

Conclusion

All-American hamburgers are a staple of American cuisine, and they've been enjoyed for generations. While there are endless variations of burgers, the essential elements remain the same – juicy meat, flavorful toppings, and a sturdy bun. By following these tips, you can create the perfect all-American burger every time.
Hamburgers are undoubtedly one of the most popular dishes in America. The all-American hamburger is not only delicious, but it is also easy to make at home with some basic ingredients. In this article, we will discuss some valuable tips that will help you make the perfect all-American hamburger recipe.

Tip 1: Choose the right meat

The meat you choose plays a crucial role in determining the taste and texture of your hamburger. While you can use any ground meat, such as beef, pork, turkey, or chicken, if you are looking for an all-American burger, you need to go for beef. When selecting the beef, you should choose ground beef with a higher percentage of fat, preferably between 15-20%. This will ensure that your burger is juicy and flavorful. You can also opt for a blend of different cuts of beef to make your burger more flavorful.

Tip 2: Don't Overwork the Meat

When mixing the meat, you should be gentle and avoid overworking it. Overworking the meat can result in a tough and dry burger. Ideally, you should use a fork or your hands to mix the meat gently, just until the ingredients are combined.

Tip 3: Season the Meat

The seasoning you choose will also make a huge difference in the taste of your burger. You can use any combination of spices and seasonings you like, but here are some common ingredients used in an all-American hamburger recipe:
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Dried oregano or thyme

Tip 4: Preheat Your Grill or Griddle

Preheating your grill or griddle is important to ensure that your burgers cook evenly and don't stick. Ideally, you should preheat your grill or griddle to high heat for at least 10-15 minutes before cooking your burgers.

Tip 5: Make an Indentation in the Center of the Patty

Making an indentation in the center of the patty will prevent the burger from puffing up in the middle while cooking. This will ensure that your burger is cooked evenly and doesn't become dry or tough.

Tip 6: Cook the Burger to Your Liking

Cooking time depends on how you like your burger, but generally, you should cook your burger for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, 4-5 minutes per side for medium, and 5-6 minutes per side for well-done. However, you should always use a meat thermometer to ensure that the internal temperature of the burger reaches at least 160°F.

Tip 7: Melt the Cheese onto the Burger

If you like cheese on your burger, you should melt the cheese onto the patty during the last minute of cooking. This will ensure that the cheese is melted and gooey, and your burger is hot and ready to serve.

Tip 8: Toast the Buns

Toasting the buns can add extra flavor and texture to your burger. You can either toast them on the grill or in a toaster, but make sure they are lightly toasted and not burnt.

Tip 9: Choose the Right Toppings

Toppings are an important part of any burger, and there are many options to choose from. Here are some common toppings used in an all-American hamburger recipe:
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Onion
  • Pickles
  • Cheese
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Mayonnaise
  • Barbecue sauce
  • Bacon

Tip 10: Serve Your Burger Fresh

Burgers are best served fresh, so make sure you assemble your burger just before serving. Serve your burgers with your preferred sides, such as french fries, onion rings, or coleslaw, and enjoy your all-American hamburger recipe!

Conclusion

Making the perfect all-American hamburger recipe is easy when you follow these valuable tips. Choose the right meat, season it well, cook it to your liking, add your favorite toppings, and serve it fresh. With these tips in mind, you can make delicious burgers at home that are sure to impress your family and friends.
