Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour
4 Eggs
1 cup Whole Milk
1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt
1/2 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or melted lard or bacon fat)
4 Sausages (about 4 ounces each)

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix flour, salt, and pepper.
  • Make a well in the middle and break in the eggs and milk. Whisk the eggs and milk and then mix slowly into the flour. You want a batter that's about as thick as pancake batter. If it's too thick, add water or milk. Cover the batter and let it rest while you finish the rest of the steps.
  • Put oil into a heatproof 6 x 3 pan. Cut sausages in half and place them into the oil. Set the air fryer to 400F for 15 minutes.
  • Carefully pour in the batter on top of the oil and sausages.
  • Set the air fryer to 360F for 20 minutes, or until the batter has risen and is browned on top.

This dish combines the crispiness of an air fryer with the classic pudding and sausage dish to create a guilt-free meal that is ready in just a few minutes. However, making the perfect air fryer toad in the hole requires some skill and knowledge of the right ingredients and techniques. In this article, we have compiled a list of valuable tips to help you make the best air fryer toad in the hole recipe that will appeal to your taste buds and impress your guests.

Tip #1: Use the Right Ingredients

The first and most important tip is to use the right ingredients when making your air fryer toad in the hole. The traditional recipe calls for flour, eggs, milk, and sausages. To make the air fryer version, you will need to modify the recipe slightly by swapping flour for a baking mix or pancake mix. The baking mix contains the necessary leavening agents that will help the toad in the hole rise and become fluffy. Additionally, you can use almond milk instead of regular milk to reduce the calories and make the recipe more vegan-friendly.

Here are the essential ingredients you will need:
  • 1 cup of baking mix
  • 1 cup of almond milk
  • 2 eggs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 sausages
  • Olive oil cooking spray

Tip #2: Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheating the air fryer is an essential step that helps to ensure even cooking and optimal results. When you preheat the air fryer, it gets to the desired temperature, and you can place the food in it immediately for cooking. Failure to preheat the air fryer can lead to uneven cooking and undercooked or overcooked food. Therefore, before you start cooking your toad in the hole, preheat your air fryer for 4-5 minutes at 375°F. This way, your air fryer will be ready, and your food will cook evenly.

Tip #3: Coat the Sausages in Flour

To prevent the sausages from sticking to the batter, it is recommended that you coat them in a light layer of flour. The flour forms a barrier between the batter and the sausages and helps to ensure that they are fully cooked and have a crispy texture. Simply roll the sausages in a small amount of flour, shake off the excess, and place them in the air fryer basket.

Tip #4: Make Sure the Batter is Smooth

To make your toad in the hole light and fluffy, it is essential to make sure that the batter is smooth with no lumps or inconsistencies. You can use a wire whisk to mix the ingredients thoroughly and ensure that everything is evenly distributed. A smooth batter helps to ensure even cooking, and you get fully cooked and fluffy toad in the hole.

Tip #5: Pour the Batter over the Sausages

When it comes to pouring the batter into the air fryer basket, always pour it over the sausages rather than trying to place the sausages into the batter. This action helps to ensure that the batter flows around the sausages and forms a better crust around the sausages. Additionally, it helps to ensure even cooking for the sausages and the batter. Once you have poured the batter, you can use a spatula to smooth it out and make sure that it is evenly distributed in the basket.

Tip #6: Do Not Overcrowd the Air Fryer Basket

Another critical tip to make your air fryer toad in the hole perfect is not to overcrowd your air fryer basket. Overcrowding the basket can lead to uneven cooking and affect the texture of the toad in the hole. To ensure that your toad in the hole gets to cook evenly and that they come out crispy and delicious, avoid placing too many sausages in the basket. Typically, you should cook your toad in the hole in batches if you have a small air fryer or cook them separately if you have a larger capacity.

Tip #7: Check the Internal Temperature of the Sausages

To ensure that the sausages in your air fryer toad in the hole are fully cooked, it is essential to check their internal temperature. The internal temperature of sausage should be 165°F to ensure that they are safe to eat. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the sausages before you remove them from the air fryer. This way, you can be sure that your dish is fully cooked, and you are not at risk of food poisoning or undercooked sausages.

Tip #8: Serve the Air Fryer Toad in the Hole Immediately

The final tip is to serve the air fryer toad in the hole immediately after cooking. The longer the toad in the hole sits, the more likely it is to lose its crispy texture and become soggy. Therefore, once you remove it from the air fryer, serve it immediately to get the best flavor and texture from your dish. Additionally, you can garnish your air fryer toad in the hole with chives or parsley to add some color and flavor.

Conclusion

The air fryer toad in the hole is a simple and delicious meal that you can make in a few minutes. With our valuable tips, you can master the art of making this dish and enjoy a crispy, fluffy, and guilt-free meal that is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Remember to use the right ingredients, preheat your air fryer, coat your sausages with flour, check the internal temperature of the sausages, and serve your toad in the hole immediately after cooking. With these tips, you can make your air fryer toad in the hole the highlight of your mealtime.
