Time 25m

Yield 2 servings

Number Of Ingredients 17

1/2 pound fresh okra
1/2 cup whole milk
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic granules
1/4 teaspoon onion granules
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Pinch ground white pepper
Pinch cayenne
Nonstick cooking spray
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon hot sauce, such as Frank's RedHot
1/2 the zest of a small lemon
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Steps:

  • Preheat an air fryer 390 degrees F and set for 15 minutes.
  • For the okra: Slice off the tops (stem ends) of the okra pods and then slice them in half lengthwise, so you get two long okra halves from each pod. Place in a medium bowl, pour in the milk and toss to coat.
  • Combine the flour, paprika, thyme, salt, garlic granules, onion granules, oregano, black pepper, white pepper and cayenne in a large bowl and whisk to combine.
  • Preheat an air fryer to 390 degrees F and set for 15 minutes. Drain excess milk from the okra and toss the okra in the flour and spice mix to evenly coat. The okra should look dry and be thoroughly coated. Place the individual coated okra pieces flat on a cutting board, shaking any excess flour back into the bowl. Spray each piece with cooking spray until the flour on the okra looks slightly wet.
  • Remove the air fryer tray from the air fryer and place the okra sprayed-side down in the tray. Be sure that the okra pieces are not overlapping (work in 2 batches if necessary). Spray the other side of the okra with cooking spray. Place the tray in the air fryer and cook the okra until it is golden brown and crunchy, about 8 minutes. You do not want any parts of the okra to look dry or ashy, so about halfway through the cooking time, gently shake and toss the okra and spray them again with cooking spray.
  • Meanwhile, for the sauce: Stir the mayonnaise, hot sauce, lemon zest and lemon juice together in a small bowl. Serve the okra hot with the sauce.

Air fryers have quickly become a household staple due to their convenience and versatility. One of the most popular things to cook in an air fryer is vegetables, and one of the tastiest vegetables to cook in an air fryer is okra. Okra is a nutritious vegetable that is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and when it is cooked in an air fryer, it becomes crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. In this article, we will provide valuable tips for making air fryer okra with smoked paprika recipes to help you get the most out of your air fryer and create delicious, healthy meals for yourself and your family.

Choose the right type of okra

When making air fryer okra with smoked paprika recipes, it is important to choose the right type of okra. Look for fresh okra that is firm and bright green in color. Avoid okra that is soft, yellow, or brown, as this indicates that it is old and past its prime. If you cannot find fresh okra, you can also use frozen okra, but be sure to thaw it completely and pat it dry before cooking.

Prepare the okra properly

Before cooking the okra in the air fryer, it is important to prepare it properly. First, rinse the okra under cold water and pat it dry with a towel. Next, trim off the stem and the tip of the okra, and then slice it into ½ inch rounds. Be sure to slice the rounds evenly so that they cook evenly in the air fryer.

Season the okra well

To enhance the flavor of the okra, it is important to season it well. Smoked paprika is a great seasoning to use when making air fryer okra, as it adds a smoky, slightly spicy flavor that complements the natural sweetness of the okra. Other seasonings that go well with okra include garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, and chili powder. Be sure to season the okra generously with your chosen seasonings.

Use a light coating of oil

Although air fryers are designed to cook food with little to no oil, a light coating of oil can help to create a crispy, golden-brown exterior on the okra. Use a high-quality oil with a high smoke point, such as avocado oil or canola oil, and spray the okra evenly with a cooking spray or brush it with oil using a silicone brush. Be sure to use a light coating of oil, as too much oil can make the okra soggy.

Preheat the air fryer

To ensure that the okra cooks evenly and crisps up nicely, it is important to preheat the air fryer. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 3-4 minutes before adding the okra. This will help to create a hot, even cooking environment that will cook the okra quickly and evenly.

Cook in batches

When making air fryer okra with smoked paprika recipes, it is important to cook the okra in batches. Crowding the air fryer basket with too much okra can cause it to cook unevenly and can result in soggy, unappetizing okra. Instead, cook the okra in batches, placing the sliced rounds in a single layer in the air fryer basket.

Shake the basket frequently

To ensure that the okra cooks evenly on all sides, it is important to shake the air fryer basket frequently while cooking. Shake the basket every 5-7 minutes to ensure that the okra is cooking evenly and to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the basket.

Check the okra frequently

It is important to check the okra frequently while it is cooking in the air fryer to ensure that it does not burn or overcook. Check the okra after 5-7 minutes of cooking and then check it again every few minutes thereafter. The okra is done when it is golden brown and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

Serve immediately

Air fryer okra with smoked paprika is best when served immediately, so be sure to remove it from the air fryer as soon as it is cooked. Serve the okra as a side dish or snack, and enjoy its crispy, smoky flavor and tender texture.

Conclusion

Air fryer okra with smoked paprika is a delicious and healthy dish that is easy to make and full of flavor. By choosing the right type of okra, preparing it properly, seasoning it well, using a light coating of oil, preheating the air fryer, cooking in batches, shaking the basket frequently, checking the okra frequently, and serving immediately, you can create perfectly crispy, golden-brown okra that is sure to please. So fire up your air fryer and give this recipe a try – your taste buds will thank you!
